3 Becoming an SPC student To get started at SPC: Complete the online college application and pay the $40 fee. Submit all official high school, GED and previous college transcripts. Take the College Placement Test (CPT) and complete all college preparatory work. Applicants who have earned college credits in mathematics, composition and/or reading may be waived from the placement test. Complete the new student orientation. For more details on how to apply to St. Petersburg College, visit spcollege.edu/getstarted. Becoming an SPC student in a health-related program Each program has separate admissions requirements. Please check the individual program for the criteria you need to meet before applying. Most health programs require you to pass a background check and drug screen, provide proof of immunizations and complete a Health Examination Form. You also will need to attend a Student Services Orientation and an orientation for your specific program. See program details for deadline. Associate in Science Degrees An Associate in Science (A.S.) degree prepares you to enter the workforce, upgrade your job skills if you are already in a field, or in some cases, transfer into a specific bachelor degree program. This two-year degree requires at least 60 credit hours. Certificates Our certificate programs allow you to prepare for a new profession or enhance your job skills while earning college credit. Certificates generally require credit hours. Applied Technology Diplomas An Applied Technology Diploma (A.T.D.) is a course of study that is part of an A.S. degree and leads to employment in a specific occupation. This diploma may consist of either vocational credit or college credit and takes fewer than 60 credit hours to complete. spcollege.edu/hec 3

Students who are not admitted must re-apply during the next appropriate application period for their program. 5 ASSOCIATE IN SCIENCE DEGREE Dental Hygiene Total credit hours: general education and support hours 58 program hours Program begins in summer Application period: Nov. 1 Jan. 15 for summer Continuing your education: The A.S. Dental Hygiene degree transfers to SPC s Bachelor of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene. Potential careers: Registered dental hygienist Employment opportunities exist in: Dental offices and clinics, private and public Federal, state and local health departments, correctional facilities and other institutions Hospitals, nursing homes and managed care facilities Professional and pharmaceutical sales Public and private schools Veterans hospitals and military facilities Dental hygienists are licensed health care professionals who are part of a dental team. They clean teeth, take X-rays and offer educational and therapeutic services. Dental hygienists work under the supervision of dentists to monitor the administration of sedation, apply fluoride and sealants, and instruct patients on good oral hygiene. Degree attained: Graduates of this program receive an Associate in Science degree in Dental Hygiene. Licensing: Dental Hygiene A.S. graduates are eligible to take the national, dental hygiene written examination. Once you pass the board exam, you can take the clinical exam in the state where you want to practice and become registered. Job market: Dental hygienists are in demand across Florida. Salary range: The average starting salary range in the Tampa Bay area is $40,000-$60,500. Salary varies based on education, position, experience and location. Program highlights: The Dental Hygiene program includes general education, support, lecture, laboratory and clinical courses. General education courses provide a general background for the rest of the degree. Support courses provide a strong scientific background for dental and dental hygiene sciences. The lecture, laboratory and clinical courses give you the technical skills needed in the dental hygiene profession. Most of the clinical components take place at the Caruth Health Education Center Dental Hygiene Clinic in Pinellas Park. Time for completion: The Dental Hygiene courses take two calendar years or six terms to complete based on full-time enrollment. Continuing your education: The EMT Applied Technology Diploma transfers to SPC s Associate in Science in Emergency Medical Services. Many EMTs continue on with fire certification, advanced degrees in EMS or other programs. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee you admission, as enrollment in this program is limited. Before you apply to the Emergency Medical Technician program, you will need to: student. Have maintained a cumulative 2.0 GPA if you were previously or are currently enrolled at SPC. Submit the Health Programs Application. Students offered admission must complete the following within 90 days of the start of the first program course to maintain eligible status: Pass a background check and drug screening. Health Examination Form and any required immunizations. Student Services and program orientations. Submit a valid Health Care Provider or Professional CPR card with the Health Programs Application. Potential careers: Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Paramedic Employment opportunities exist in: Correctional facilities or other institutions Doctors offices Educational institutions EMS agencies Fire departments Hospitals Law enforcement agencies Military and VA facilities Private industry The EMT cares for patients at the scene of an accident and during transport to the hospital under the direction of more highly trained medical personnel. EMTs supply basic life support measures including patient assessment, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), oxygen therapy, prevention of shock, bandaging, splinting, spinal immobilization and vehicle extrication. Degree attained: Graduates of this program receive an Emergency Medical Technician Applied Technology Diploma. Licensing: Your Emergency Medical Technician Applied Technology Diploma qualifies you to take the State of Florida or National Registry exam for certification as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic. Job market: There is a shortage both statewide and nationally for EMTs and paramedics. The job market is especially lucrative for those who also are fire-certified. Salary range: The average starting salary range in the Tampa Bay area is $18,000-32,000. Salary varies based on education, position, experience and location. Program highlights: EMT students participate in lecture and lab classes at the Health Education Center. Clinicals are accomplished in various Pinellas County emergency departments and hospitals. A field internship is required through Pinellas County fire and EMS agencies. Time for completion: The Emergency Medical Technician express classes (days) take 16 weeks to complete. The Emergency Medical Technician regular classes (evenings) take 24 weeks to complete. Many paramedics continue on with fire certification, advanced degrees in EMS or other programs. Potential careers: Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Paramedic Employment opportunities exist in: Correctional facilities or other institutions Doctors offices Educational institutions EMS agencies Fire departments Hospitals Law enforcement agencies Military and VA facilities Private industry Paramedics provide more extensive pre-hospital care than do EMTs and are trained in advanced life support measures. The paramedic functions as the out-of-hospital team leader by coordinating care provided by first responders and EMTs. Paramedics also administer medications, interpret electrocardiograms (EKGs) and perform endotracheal intubations and defibrillations. Potential careers: Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Paramedic Employment opportunities exist in: Correctional facilities or other institutions Doctors offices Educational institutions EMS agencies Fire departments Hospitals Law enforcement agencies Military and VA facilities Private industry Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is a system comprised of several levels. The two levels certified by the State of Florida are EMT and Paramedic. An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is a basic life support providor that uses medical equiptment such as automatic defibrillators to deliver emergency care. They are the backbone of EMS delivery in the U.S. and work in a team with advanced medical care providers. EMTs can also be found in the militray, in hospitals as patient care technicians, and in other public safety positions such as firefighter and police officer. A paramedic is an advanced life support provider that provides advanced care. Besides working in a pre-hospital system, paramedics work in the hospital as patient care technicians, in the military, and in a variety of other public safety positions. To become a Paramedic a person must first be an EMT. Effective January 1, 2013, all paramedic education must be accredited by the Commission on Allied Health Education Accredition. Degree attained: Graduates of this program receive an Associate in Science degree in Emergency Medical Services. To apply for the A.S. degree, you must first have your Paramedic Certificate and EMT Applied Technology Diploma. Time for completion: The Emergency Medical Services courses take two years to complete based on full-time enrollment, including all EMT and Paramedic courses. Students are required to complete remedial courses before enrolling in any EMS courses. Program accreditation: The St. Petersburg College EMS program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www. caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP). Licensing: Your Paramedic Certificate and Emergency Medical Technician Advanced Technical Diploma qualify you to take the State of Florida or National Registry exam for certifications. Job market: EMS job opportunities are plentiful. Many firefighter/ems personnel are retiring and the state of Florida estimates more than 2,000 employees will be needed in the next three to five years. Job placement, especially for paramedics with fire certification, is nearly 100 percent. Salary range: The average starting salary range in the Tampa Bay area is $30,000 - $55,000. Salary varies based on education, position, experience and location. Program highlights: The EMS A.S. program includes general education courses that prepare students to communicate effectively and support courses that provide a strong scientific background for EMS sciences. Instructive, laboratory, clinical and field internship courses in the major allow students to develop the skills they need to enter the EMS profession. Potential careers: Funeral director Embalmer Cemeterian Cremationist Pre-arrangement counselor Employment opportunities exist in: Large and small funeral homes Your own funeral home Funeral service professionals are professional caregivers who work with the bereaved to provide sensitive, effective services during a time of emotional need. They enable families and communities to express their concern for life and the living and facilitate funeral service arrangements. They oversee the logistics of funerals, prepare obituary notices for publication, arrange for pallbearers and clergy, schedule the opening and closing of a grave, prepare sites for services, and provide for the transportation of remains, mourners and flowers. They also direct preparation and shipment of remains for out-of-state burial. Most funeral directors are trained, licensed and practicing embalmers. Embalming is a sanitary, cosmetic and preservative process through which the body is prepared for burial.
