1 Managing Your Course Home Page eclass C&I Tools Training Creating Widgets Widgets are specific blocks of content that appear on your course Home page (calendar, checklists, bookmarks, etc.). You must create a widget before it can be added to your course Home page. 1. Click Edit Course on the course navigation bar. 2. Click Widgets from the list of tools (under Site Setup, if you are in Category view). Note: There are two types of widgets: system widgets and custom widgets. System widgets cannot be altered, but custom widgets can. 3. Under the Widgets tab, select Create Widget. 1 of 6
2 4. Under the Properties tab, give your widget a Name (required). You can also give it a Description (optional). However, the description will NOT be viewed by the students. (This is only for your organizational purposes.) 5. Click the Content tab. This is where you will add the content that students will see. Use the HTML box to insert content that is visible to students. You can customize the style of your widget, changing the color, title bar background, etc. Click here to preview your created widget. If you are finished and do not need to add release conditions, click Save and Close. (Skip to Step 6 to create release conditions.) 2 of 6
3 6. To add release conditions to the widget, click the Release Conditions tab. (Your content will automatically be saved.) Follow the directions in the Release Conditions document to either attach an existing condition or create and attach a new condition. Note: You can set multiple release conditions for the same item. Adding Widgets to Your Home Page Remember, that you must create the widget before it can be added to your Home page. 1. Click Edit Course on the course navigation bar. 2. Click Homepages (under Site Setup, if you are in Category view). 3. Click Create Homepage. 4. Under Create Homepage, do the following: 3 of 6
4 Name the Homepage (required). Provide an optional Description. Under Homepage Header, leave the default. o Include custom homepage header checked. o Org Unit name selected. Choose Design a widget-based homepage. The default layout is a two-panel page. If you d like to change the layout, click the Change Layout button. Several layout choices will appear. Simply choose the style you would like for your Homepage and select Update. 4 of 6
5 Now, you need to add widgets to your page. Under Widgets, select where on your layout you want to add the widget(s) and then choose Add Widgets. Simply check the boxes of the widgets you would like to add and then click Add. (Notice the Welcome widget appears.) Complete this step for the other layout areas. If your Homepage is how you would like it, scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save and Close. For additional customization options, follow the steps below and then click Save and Close. Reordering Widgets To reorder widgets within a layout block, hover over the widget s area that you want to move. Hold down the left mouse button and move the widget up or down to the correct location. 5 of 6
6 Customizing the Style of Widgets You can customize the style of the widget if you d like, changing the color, title bar background, etc., by hovering over the widget and left-clicking inside widget s area. (See picture above under Reordering Widgets.) A number of style choices will appear. Make any changes and click Save and Close. Removing Widgets To remove a widget from a layout block, simply hover over the top right corner of the widget until you see a circled X. Click on the X to remove the widget. Making Your New Homepage Your Active Homepage Now that you ve created your Homepage, you need to make it active for it to appear. To do this, under Active Homepage, select your Homepage and click Apply. Your Homepage will now appear as your course s Homepage. 6 of 6
