1 THE TORTOLITA TIMES TORTOLITA S STUDENT NEWSPAPER OCTOBER 2011 Bullying By Jeremy Fisher At Tortolita there has been some bullying, and students have been hurt. Students think this is dumb and embarrassing. Bullies think that doing this is funny. I think they just want to be cool, but students who are their victims get their feelings hurt. Sometimes they get binder checked, sometimes it is just name calling, but some people get hit or kicked. Sometimes it is eighth graders who pick on seventh graders, but also sometimes it is seventh graders against seventh graders, or eighth graders against eighth graders. The teachers and staff are trying to put a stop to this kind of thing. It is hurtful and dangerous, and not the way we need to behave. On September 22 nd we had a school wide bullying lesson. We all watched an episode of Dateline called My Kid Would Never Bully. On the video, the parents watched their kids when they were put in bullying situations. Many were surprised to find out that their kids got involved with bullying, and just went along with the crowd, and bullied other kids. We watched each part, and then had class discussions about what was happening in the video. The most important thing that we learned was that if just one kid stood up for the person who was being bullied, the bullying got better, and we could be the person to help when this kind of thing is going on. If you see someone being bullied at school, let someone know. If bullies know that we are not going to allow this kind of thing to happen at our school, maybe they will stop. Cougars are not bullies!

2 Meet Our New Administrators By Jeremy Fisher Mrs. Barbara Kohl is our new principal at Tortolita this year. She is not a new principal, she has been a principal six times. Her last school was Townsend K-8 in TUSD. She got her job here after being interviewed by a teacher and some students, and some people at our central office. She plans on helping us here by focusing on reading and math. Mrs. Kohl thinks the best thing about TMS so far is the diversity of our students. She is also impressed by our teachers. One thing she would like to change is she would like students to be responsible for their behavior, and to take care of people. Mrs. Kohl has been on the announcements almost everyday encouraging our students and staff to start their day in a positive way. Just watch out if you are wearing a hat on campus! TMS is lucky to have these two dedicated educators at our school this year! Mr. Todd Ponder is our new associate principal. He says he feels an awesome responsibility to the students and the staff that he serves on a daily basis. Student success is his focus, and everything he does is with that in mind. Mr. Ponder got the job after interviewing with a committee over the phone. He was offered the job, and came out to visit in May just before school got out. He was an associate principal at Rebecca Boone Elementary in Warrenton, Missouri for the last four years. He was also a high school band director at Warrenton High School. He has been in education for 17 years. Mr. Ponder plans on helping us by listening closely to students and staff in an effort to make TMS the best it can be. He says the best things about TMS so far are the students and staff. He would like to make sure that students understand that there are ways of solving disputes, and that fighting words can be more powerful than physical action.

I don't know, but it is great at chasing submarines. Why wasn't there any food left after the monster party?' Cause everyone was a goblin. Why did the vampire's lunch give him heartburn? It was a stake sandwich. Dracula decided he need a dog, which breed did he choose? A bloodhound. What would you call the ghost of a door-to-door salesman? A dead ringer. What do skeletons always order at a restaurant? Spare ribs! Who was the most famous French skeleton? Napoleon Bone-apart. Who won the skeleton beauty contest? No body.

The next meeting of the TMS student newspaper, The Tortolita Times will be on October 20 th in room C-117 during both lunches. Bring your lunch, and join us during your lunch time. If you have something you would like to put in the paper, bring it with you. Having it saved on your flash drive works really well. If you like to write or draw, and would like to be a part of our staff, we would love to have you at our meeting. You don t have to sign up, just show up, and we will brainstorm some great ideas for our next issue! We are looking for information about how the first round of Instructional Intensity went for students and staff at TMS.
