3 Introduction Once you have decided to invest in a decking with Heveatech, there are some fundamental properties of natural wood that you must be aware of. Heveatech is made from 100% afforested rubber wood. Therefore it does not damage natural forest environment. Wood is a bio-material with a natural beauty. This also means that the wood s appearance and color change as it ages due to various causes such as exposure to the UV rays, wind, rain, and snow. If you want to preserve your wood s beautiful appearance, it requires regular maintenance such as cleaning and recoating periodically. This will protect the wood against damages caused by weather conditions. You do not necessarily have to invest a lot of time on maintenance.

4 Daily Cleaning Over time, appearance of Heveatech becomes dirty, due to dust, green algae, fungus, etc. With an easy daily maintenance you can keep your Heveatech clean. Daily Cleaning Swipe off dust and dirt using a broom. After rain or snow, wipe the moisture off the surface Tools: Cleaning Heavy Dirt Floor Cleaner, Brush, Rubber Glove, Wiper 1. Rinse it with water 3. The deck should be rinsed thoroughly 2. Apply the wood decking cleaner with a brush and then scrub the surface. 4

5 Cleaning Mold If Heveatech is installed in a humid or a damp place, there is a chance for fungus and algae to grow. While they will not cause the wood to decay, these fungus and algae will alter the wood appearance. In case of black mold which cannot be cleaned with daily cleaning, try the following method. Tools: Removing Black Mold Brush Decking cleaner Natural Detergent Chlorine- Containing Detergent 1. Clean the wood surface by brushing the surface using decking cleaner or natural detergent. Rinse with water. 3. Rinse the wood and let it dry. If mold remains remove with sand paper 2. If the mold is still there, Spray the Chlorine Detergent on the mold and leave it for 5 minutes. For safety measures wear gloves. 5

6 Recoating Introduction to Recoating It is recommended to recoat at least once a year. Frequency of recoating depends on how much the product is exposed to UV rays, wind, and rain or snow. Recommended Coating Materials Outdoor use penetrating type stain or oil finishes is recommended (Examples are shown below) Do not use the paint which forms film on the surface, UV and weather resistant. Contains anti-mold substance. Low contents of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Recommended Coating: Otani Paint Vaton Bona Deck Oil Xyaladecor 6

7 Recoating Before recoating, clean your decking thoroughly with decking cleaner or household detergent, water, and brush. Cleaning decking with household detergent, water and brush If film type paint is previously used, please remove the film coating by slightly sanding the surface or with a paint remover. Remove the coating film. Recoating must be done when the weather is dry. This allows the oil to properly soak into the wood. Do not recoat when temperature is above 30 C or below 10 C or if rain or dew is expected. Do not apply coating on extremely hot surface. Temperature and weather ideal condition for recoating 7

8 Recoating The recoating material should be stirred thoroughly before use. If using several cans, mix it together in one large container. Refer to instruction manual for spread quantity (L/m 2 ) and coating interval Please read the instruction manual of each coating product. In case appears rough surface surrounding the knot, smoothen the surface with sandpaper and apply coating again Smoothen the decking surface with sandpaper Apply recoating decking as per instruction Recoating the decking. 8

9 Recoating After recoating Depending on the weather, it will take several days to dry completely. The decking must NOT be exposed to water until the coating dries. In case of rain, cover decking with a plastic tarp / sheet. Cover with plastic sheet to protect decking from water 9
