1 REVISED: August/2006 Program: Adult Literacy/High School Diploma Course of Study: High School Diploma Course: 1:2006 Foreign Language/American Sign Language Foreign Language/Spanish 1B Course Description: This competency-based course emphasizes the receptive communication skills of listening and reading comprehension and the productive language skills of speaking and writing. It emphasizes communication in the foreign language and provides students with an insight into the structure, vocabulary, and history of the language. It also assists students in comparing and understanding the Hispanic cultures and subcultures. This course has been approved to satisfy the e (LOTELanguage Other Than English) subject area of the UC/CSU a-g requirements for freshman admission. The NCAA has approved this course for use in establishing the initial-eligibility certification status of student-athletes from schools in the Division. Credits: 5 Hours: 60 Prerequisites: Foreign Language/Spanish 1A ( ) or passing of Spanish 1A final exam After a student has completed this course, he/she may not be allowed to re-enroll in the course.

INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY OF SPANISH Understand basic aspects of Spanish. (7 hours) 1. Discuss classroom rules. 2. Review classroom expressions. 3. Review instructional phrases. 4. Ask and give permission, state commands, and make requests of others. 11. Use the formal and informal command forms. 12. Recognize words similar to English (cognates). 13. Identify geographical areas where Spanish is spoken. B. ORTHOGRAPHY Demonstrate knowledge of punctuation, accent marks, and capitalization. (3 hours) 14. Review rules for accent marks. 15. Use accent marks correctly. 16. Review rules for punctuation. 17. Punctuate phrases and sentences correctly. 18. Capitalize sentences correctly. 19. Review rules for capitalization. C. PHONOLOGY Demonstrate knowledge of consonant sounds, vowel sounds, diphthongs, linking, accentuation, and gender. (3 hours) 20. Review the consonant sounds spelled [b] or [v]. 21. Review the consonant sounds spelled [s] and [z]. 22. Introduce the fricative [d]. 23. Review the trilled [r]. 24. Introduce dipthongs with the previously practiced vowel sounds [ai], [oa], [ie], [ei] and [io]. 25. Compare and contrast linking patterns in English and Spanish. 26. Practice pronounciation of multi-syllable words and know where accentuation is. 27. Review the division of words. 28. Review rules for stress, intonation, and syllabication. 29.
