2 SPANISH III Grades Reading Strand CONTENT STANDARD S III 1: The student will read with understanding more complex structures in the language on a variety of topics, moving from concrete to more abstract concepts. BENCHMARKS 10-12SIII 1.1 The student is able to understand increasingly complex sentence structures that emphasize the use of the preterit, the imperfect, and the present subjunctive when reading about vacations, travel, weather, lifestyles, and routine conversations. 1.2 The student is able to understand increasingly complex sentence structures that emphasize the future, the conditional, the present subjunctive, and the imperfect subjunctive when reading about leisure activities and cultural events through formal and informal language, stages of one s life, social events, and family celebrations. 1.3 The student is able to use the present perfect the pluperfect, the conditional perfect and the future when reading about Hispanic social problems, values, and politeness and Spain's role in US history. 1.4 The student is able to use reflexive verbs, the present participle, and the passive voice when reading about health and health care systems in Latin America, and racial, ethnic and native groups in the Americas. UNDERSTANDING THE STANDARD INTENT OF STANDARD The intent of this standard is that the student will read about preferences, feelings, emotions and opinions with understanding. The student will read and understand complex structures in the indicative and subjunctive. The student will read culturally acceptable vocabulary and idiomatic expressions. SKILLS/PROCESSES To be successful with this standard, the student: Vocabulary Reads with understanding about; travel habits of people in Spanish-speaking areas of the world the booking and cancellation process of plane or train reservations information in different travel situations the weather daily routines of Hispanic youth invitations as well as accepts or refuses them opinions about leisure time activities
