1 Hospital Based Healing Enhancement P R O G R A M Offering integrative healing therapies along with conventional medicine
2 Healing Enhancement therapies create balance and healing and treat the whole person. They are designed to complement an individual s medical care. Mayo Clinic Rochester offers the following therapies through the Integrative Medicine program and in collaboration with our Mayo Clinic Volunteer Services. Massage Therapy and Reflexology Many people choose massage to help them relax, release muscle tension or ease pain. Nationally certified massage therapists will work with your medical team to provide massage therapy or reflexology as part of your plan of care. Massage Therapy is available for a fee for service. Talk to your primary medical team or nursing staff to discuss an order for consultation.* Acupuncture Acupuncture has evidence for assisting with many medical issues including pain and nausea. Acupuncture is a 5,000 year old complex system of medicine that utilizes insertion of sterile needles into specific acupuncture points to enhance the body s self-healing abilities. A licensed and nationally certified acupuncturist or a Medical Doctor trained in acupuncture is available on a limited basis. Insurance coverage of Integrative Medical services varies. Call your insurance company to see if they have acupuncture benefits. Talk to your primary medical team or nursing staff about an order for consultation.* Physician and Integrative Health Specialist Consultation A physician or Integrative Health Specialist with education in Integrative Medicine is available to discuss and develop a treatment plan utilizing integrative therapies. Discussion and treatment plan may include: Review of herbal formulas and dietary supplements to identify potential interactions with prescription medications Mind body modalities such as paced deep breathing, guided imagery, meditation, yoga or Tai Chi, biofeedback and resiliency training Massage Acupuncture Stress General wellness education Coaching or resilience training* * Fee-based service. Insurance coverage of Integrative Medical services varies. You will be responsible for that portion of your bill if your treatments are not covered. Talk to your primary medical team or nursing staff about an order for consultation. Massage Therapy - billed per minute; fee: $1.25/minute; average treatment is 20 minutes. Acupuncture - billed per 15 minutes; fee: $105/first 15 minutes; average treatment is 30 minutes. $185/30 minute treatment.
3 Music Therapy Healing music can reduce stress, anxiety and pain. A certified music therapist is available on a limited basis to pediatric areas to combine music and therapeutic techniques as part of a medical plan of care. Through the Humanities in Medicine Program and Volunteer Services, music performances are offered in special areas of the medical facility or at the bedside. Patients may bring their own music selections with them, the patient library has music selections and CD players that can be ordered. CDs are available in the gift shop. The CARE Channel is available in the inpatient rooms and there are other TV channels that offer a selection of music, meditations or guided imagery. Talk to your primary medical team or nursing staff about your specific interest in music for listening or for music therapy with your medical plan of care. Essential Oils Essential oils come from plants. They have been used for thousands of years to help with many different symptoms. Essential oils are utilized by the massage therapists and Integrative Health Specialist. These individuals have specialized training in aromatherapy and the use of essential oils. We use an inhalation method for these oils: applied to a cotton ball and breathed in. These oils may help with pain, anxiety, sleeping problems and nausea. Essential oils may be available in the gift shop as individual oils or inhalers. Talk with your primary medical team or nursing staff if you are interested in a consultation for essential oils use with your medical plan of care. Anti-nausea Wrist Bands Anti-nausea wrist strips that help control nausea and vomiting are placed on your wrist. They have a small button that is used to stimulate specific pressure points on the wrist. This is an ancient healing practice called acupressure. There is evidence to suggest that use of this specific acupressure point for nausea may be helpful for adult patients with nausea related to surgical procedures and anesthesia. Talk to your primary medical team or nursing staff if you are interested in anti-nausea wrist bands for nausea and its use with your individual medical plan of care.
4 Mayo Clinic Volunteer Healing Enhancement Programs Caring Hands Massage Mayo Clinic Volunteers provide patients, visitors and staff comfort and tranquility with a non-therapeutic relaxing hand massage. If you are interested in this service, talk with your medical care team and nursing staff about a consultation or service request. Caring Canines Therapy Animals An animal and its handler that have specialized training and are registered as a therapy animal team may be available for visitation and can collaborate with the medical care team for specific needs. Therapy animals provide compassion and support, nurture human-animal interactions, and help to motivate patients. Animal Therapy is provided in two formats: Animal Assisted Activity and Animal Assisted Therapy. If you are interested in this service, talk with your medical care team and nursing staff about a consultation or service request. Healing Touch and Reiki Volunteer Program Mayo Clinic Volunteers that are specifically trained in Healing Touch or Reiki may be available to provide these therapies in the hospital room. Healing Touch and Reiki uses gentle touch to help balance and support an individual s natural ability to heal. There is evidence that these therapies may help relieve stress, anxiety, pain, nausea and sleeping problems when used to complement a medical plan of care. If you are interested in this service, talk with your medical care team and nursing staff about a consultation or service request. Insurance and Payment* Please note that insurance providers may or may not cover integrative services, therefore you will be responsible for that portion of your bill if not covered. Some fee for services options are charged directly to your hospital bill. If you have questions about the cost of these services, please call the Mayo Clinic Estimating Office at (507) for more information. Mayo Clinic Integrative Therapies There is an outpatient Integrative Medicine program that is available for consultation and services. Services include: physician and allied health staff consultation, massage therapy and acupuncture. Appointments for Integrative Medicine Services are available to established Mayo Clinic patients. A referral from a Mayo Rochester provider is necessary.
