It is used for splicing and patching: splicing primary coated fiber from loose tube cable to fiber pigtail on a single element base and connector patching to pigtails with a capacity of 12 or 24 splices and connections. In case of 12 splices and connections there is a possibility to store patchcords overlength (up to 12 x 3m 2.4mm patchcords). It is a high density multifunctional unit designed for particular applications and environments. This unit uses Patching/Splicing trays with 12 connector positions. These trays house the splices, slack fiber, connectors and pigtails. The unit is standard provided for 19 frame mounting (adaptor brackets to metric rack sizes are available). Follow local safety regulations related to optical fiber plant elements. (2) This position is required for mounting in the FIST-GR/UR rack. (3) Attention! 3 3.1.2 Space requirements 1 minimum 60mm at left/right for horn and pigtails. 2 minimum 25 mm at back in case of cable back termination. 3.2 Preparation of the shelf Spacing between adjacent units may vary depending on frame upright pitch and cable management products Mount the trumpet at the side where patchcords enter the shelf Determine the position of the shelf (see rack installation instruction). Fix the cage nuts into the rack mounting uprights (use the FACC-CAGE-NUT-Tool) Pull the drawer to the fully open position and rotate the security-lip 180 to prevent the drawer from moving back inside the Unit Mount the shelf using the FACC-ALLEN-Key To make a tray accessible raise all the trays above. Keep these in position by using two tray wedges In case of ETSI mounting: adaption brackets can be used. Use FIST-MB-1HU-M at the front or FIST-MB-1HU-GR at the back (for FIST-GR or FIST-UR mounting). 3

4 3.2.4 All trays can be removed for easy access. 3.3 Cable termination Fasten the flex tube at the back of the shelf using the two already installed tie wraps. The flex tube has a predefined length and may not be cut off! The cable termination is suited for maximum 1 cable, cable retention is done with tie-wraps. Loose tubes are fed thru a flexible tube to the shelf, the strength member is attached to the shelf Remove the cable jacket over approximately 2.2 m. Wait to strip the loose tube to avoid fiber breakage. Cut the strength member to length (max. 5 cm) Close the drawer partially to be able to fasten the flex tube at the back of the metal hinge plate using 2 small tie-wraps. The picture shows the mounting of the flex tube for jumpers that leave the shelf at the right hand side. Assure that the tie-wraps are well tensioned to avoid slippage of the flex tube and cut the excess length of the tie-wraps. Knobs of the tie-wraps must be positioned at the front of the metal hinge plate. Make sure the flex tube is positioned under the pigtail belt Guide the identified loose tubes into the flex tube. This can be facilitated by keeping the end of the loose tube bundled together with a piece of tape Pull the drawer to the fully open position and rotate the security-lip 180 to prevent the drawer from moving back inside the Unit Assemble the components onto the back of the shelf. The picture shows cable coming from the left (seen from the back of the shelf). For cable coming from the right the reverse assembly is required Apply minimum one layer of foam around the flex tube at both ends, approximately 1cm from the end. This tape must be positioned underneath at least one of the tie-wraps. (This tape prevents easy pullout of the flex tube). 4

5 3.4.2 Plug the connectors into the appropriate connector adaptors Apply one layer of foam around the cable at approximately 1cm from the end. This tape must be positioned underneath at least one of the tie-wraps. Attach the strength member to the strength member connector. Avoid unnecessary crossing of the strength member and the loose buffer tubes. Cut the excess length of the tiewraps Now the IFC can be coiled into the slack fiber storage area. Fibers must be untangled before coiling Splicing repair connectors is possible : one can use the splice holder which is premounted in the tray Position the strength member fixation exactly as shown. Notice orientation of the washer Check wether all fibers are properly routed before placing the cover on the IFC module. All fibers should be underneath the containment lips. 3.4 Installation preconnectorised IFC 3.5 Termination and splicing loose tube on tray For ease of installation start with the bottom tray. If possible apply 1 wrap of foam tape around the IFC, just before the jacket end (This foam prevents from easy pull-out and provides protection to the fibers inside). Attach to the tray with 2 small tie-wraps. At least 1 tiewrap should be on top of the foam tape. Cut the excess length of the tie-wrap. Make sure the tie wrap knob is at the side of the IFC. Don t squeeze the fibers Identify the loose tubes and put the tie wraps in position on the tray as shown. 5

6 3.5.2 Bring the loose tubes on the tray and mark them at the first tiewrap If necessary, tubes can be bundled with 1 foam. If loose tubes are added at a later date, use other positions Cut a rubber foam to length and tape it around the loose tube Remove all the premounted pigtails out of the storage area and mark the fibers at the splice holder. Remove the secondary coating from this point. This assures the transition primary-secondary is in a straight line! Push the loose tubes in the tray, and mark them again 1,5 cm beyond the second tie wrap Position all the pigtails under the splice protection and leave them there. The fibers have to be kept in this position during further installation Splice the fibers Strip the loose tubes at this second mark, clean the fibers, and tighten the tie-wraps. Make sure the tie wrap knob is at the side of the tube. 6

7 Place the splice protector in his holder,start at outside of the tray, (hold the splice holder with finger to prevent bending) and coil the fibers in the tray Identify the 4 pigtails. Bundle them with PVC tape. Route them up to the tray, mark the 4 pigtails on the GTU position. Make sure there is 1,5 m pigtail available from this point. The length is limited to 1 m in case of tight coated pigtail Strip the pigtail jacket at the marks. Cut the Kevlar to ± 10 cm Check wether all fibers are properly routed before placing the cover on the tray. All fibers should be under the containment lips. 3.6 Installation of Break out cable/pigtail Bend the over the edge of the inner part. Don t entangle the fibers, avoid crossings Use the GTU kit for the termination of a group of 4 pigtails. 7

8 3.6.5 Slide the outer part over the inner part. Keep both parts under a certain angle as shown. Keep the Kevlar in position with your left thumb In case of pigtails with a limited amount of Kevlar (typical outside diameter < 2.2 mm): wrap the Kevlar twice around the inner part. Bring the Kevlar of 2 neighbouring pigtails together and pass the Kevlar between both pigtails. Repeat for the 2 other pigtails. Always install 4 pigtails Slide the metal clip over the pigtails and then over the GTU, up to the front Take the GTU at the metal clip and pull at the Kevlar until it locks completely Mount the GTU. Start at outside of the tray Strip the pre-mounted pigtails (see ) Cut excess Kevlar. Identify the pigtails. Remove the secondary coating 1-2 cm from the GTU (only possible in case of semi-tight pigtail). This ensures you the transition primary-to-secundary is in a straight line Splice the fibers. Place the splice protector in his holder, start at outside of the tray. (hold the splice holder with finger to prevent bending). Coil the fibers in the tray. 8

9 Check wether all fibers are properly routed before placing the cover on the module. Fibers can not be on top of containment lips Remark:Storing non spliced fibers. When not all 12 fibers are spliced at once: route the non-spliced fibers on top of the stored fibers. Route them outside the storage zone to have easy access at a later date. 3.7 Patching (pigtail routing) Feed the jumpers thru the side entrance and route them up to the tray Remove the connector adaptor out of the tray and mount the connector into it as described. Push the plastic hooks which hold the adaptor away(1) and push the adaptor simultaneously in the opposite direction(2). Place the adapter + connector back in the tray by sliding and hinging it down along the vertical axis. Note: don t lift the adaptors too high to avoid optical losses. 9

10 3.7.3 Repeat this procedure with the other pigtails. Respect exactly the routing of jumpers as shown on the picture. Provide sufficient slack for patching to all other positions in the shelve. The two pigtails on the front must be routed along the front bend control island! Route the jumpers via the bendcontrol islands to store the overlength In case of E2000 connectors. Position release lever at the top Route the jumpers over the flex tube up to the tray. 3.8 Patchcord overlength storage Guide the incoming jumpers through the side entrance, over the flex tube and behind the bendcontrol (1). Place the self adhesive latch clip at the correct position (2). Close the clip to keep the jumpers in place. 10

11 3.9 Closing the shelf Identifiy the connections and the unit (location, rack nr. and shelf nr.) on the identification label. 4 Important steps Don't modify the predefined flex tube length. Apply foam tape to the flex tube. Apply foam tape to loose tubes on the trays. Make sure the transition primary-to-secondary fiber is in a straight line: under the splice holder (in case of tight coated pigtail: in the splice protector). Cut excess length of tie-wraps. Make sure all fibers and pigtails are properly routed and are under the containment lips To close the drawer, turn the pivoting safety lock first Place the label and write the information. 11
