1 Pawn or Peón? Students will: Understand that the names of the chess pieces are different depending on where the game is being played and the language being spoken Assessment: Identify the names of the chess pieces in English and Spanish Assessment: Learn the symbols of each chess piece, and connect them to their English names Assessment: Successfully associate names and symbols of the game pieces using a Concentration-like matching game Time Requirement: minutes Supplies: Bilingual chess piece flash cards (included) Concentration cards (two sheets, included) Guided Discussion: 1. What languages do students speak? What other languages are students aware of, and in what countries are they spoken? 2. Do any students know the same word in two different languages? (i.e., friend and amigo/a, hello and bonjour, etc.) 3. Have students ever heard of, or know how to play, chess? Do they know the names of any of the pieces in English? Like any other words, chess pieces go by one name in English, but by different names in other languages. 4. Tell students that today, they will be learning the names of the chess pieces in Spanish, and the symbols associated with each piece. 5. Use the 8½x11 flash cards to review each chess piece. Each card has the name of a chess piece in English and in Spanish, an image of the chess piece itself, as well as an image associated with the chess piece s name and identity. The pieces are as follows: a. King (Rey RAY): Head of a country and its government, symbolized by a crown topped by a cross b. Queen (Reina Ray-EE-nuh): Sometimes a leader, often a king s spouse, also symbolized by a crown, or coronet c. Rook (Torre TOR-ay): A castle or tower, symbolized by a crenellated tower d. Bishop (Alfin Al-FEEN): Religious leaders, symbolized by the bishop s hat, or mitre e. Knight (Caballo Cuh-BY-oh): Soldiers mounted on horseback, symbolized by a horse f. Pawn (Peón Pay-OWN): Symbolizes the largest but weakest groups in society, poor soldiers and/or farm laborers, symbolized by small, simple game pieces topped with a small sphere

2 6. Go over the cards, emphasizing each element the Spanish vocabulary and their English translations, the form of the chess piece compared to its name/identity, and the symbolism of the chess piece compared to the other, more literal image. Tailor comparisons and conversations to students ages and ability levels for instance, younger or pre-literate students might better understand conversations based around the visual elements. Classroom Activity 1. Have students ever played a game of Concentration? In it, players are faced with a number of cards turned face-down. Turning over two cards at a time, they try to find matches, and must begin to remember where cards are placed in order to find their matches later in the game. Make copies of the two pages of Concentration cards, and divide students into small groups to play their own game. Once again, younger students might use only the cards with pictures and visual cues; older students can do vocabulary or even mix and match between games matching Spanish vocabulary with the chess pieces, for example, or using all the cards and challenging students to find all four elements: English vocabulary, Spanish vocabulary, chess piece, and associated image. Missouri Grade Level Expectations (GLEs): Communication Arts - Reading 1. Develop and apply skills and strategies to the reading process Communication Arts Listening and Speaking 1. Develop and apply effective listening skills and strategies 2. Develop and apply effective speaking skills and strategies for various audiences and purposes Social Studies 6. Knowledge of relationships of the individual and groups to institutions and cultural traditions
