7 Endianness The terms endian and endianness refer to the convention used to interpret the data when are stored in the computer's memory. When reading or writing data, into memory, the order of the bytes stored in memory determines the interpretation of the data. Big-endian systems store the most significant byte in the smallest address and the least significant byte is stored in the largest address Little-endian systems, in contrast, store the least significant byte in the smallest address.

8 Why Linux LE? Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.1 offers both options little endian and big endian versions. Running little endian mode accelerates business application innovation by eliminating a significant and outdated barrier to application portability and allowing customers with the latest IBM Power Systems to leverage the significant existing ecosystem of Linux applications previously developed and restricted to x86 architectures. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.1 little endian enables simple data migration, simplifies data sharing (interoperability) with Linux on x86, and improves I/O options with modern I/O adapters and devices, e.g. GPUs.

19 CAPI for POWER8 RHEL7.2 support for Coherent Accelerator Processor Interface (CAPI) enablement for POWER8 processor* CAPI (Coherent Accelerator Processor Interface) is a new, in POWER8, interface for attaching FPGA devices to the system. This feature will be the base kernel enablement to enable, control and expose the CAPI-attached FPGA devices to userspace. CAPI is the basis of the POWER roadmap for FGPA enablement in the POWER8 timeframe.
