It became just as important as vocal music, both in quality and quantity. Many new developments occurred in the instrumental world, for example, the use of basso continuo texture. This texture involves one or more bass instruments performing a bass line and a keyboard instrument playing chords (usually the harpsichord). The melody sounds on top of them, played by other instruments. 5 ACTIVITY 3 TEXT: Susan lived in Los Angeles, California. She was a nurse. One day back in 2004, when she went to take out the rubbish, she found an old cello near the rubbish tip. She thought it was made of beautiful wood, and decided to take it with her. She gave it to her boyfriend, who was a cabinet-maker, to make into a CD case. After several days, Susan read in the newspaper that a genuine Stradivarius cello, which belonged to L.A. Philarmonic Orchestra s Peter Stumpf Institution, had been lost. It was valued at three and a half million dollars. She couldn t believe that she had that cello and it was going to become a CD case! How could a cello be that expensive? She did some research in the Internet about Stradivarius instruments, and found the following information: Before the Industrial Revolution, string instruments were handmade by professionals called luthiers. In the 17th century, there was a famous Italian luthier called Antonio Stradivarius, whose instruments were highly regarded because of their exquisite sound. Nobody has ever discovered the secret of his handmade process, but it is true that nobody has ever made instruments of such quality. It is thought that around 1200 Stradivarius instruments were made, but only around 600 have survived. They are unique pieces of an incalculable value, and the existing ones belong to museums, private collections or music institutions. Susan was shocked. She wanted to give it back to the Institution, but her boyfriend had already started to separate the pieces of the cello. Finally they decided to call the Institution and explain the story. REVISION ACTIVITY (Read some definitions aloud until one student completes the bingo) Suite: instrumental composition made of dance movements. Luthier: a person who makes string instruments by hand. Concerto: instrumental composition for an orchestra and a soloist or group of soloists. Harpsichord: keyboard string instrument used for basso continuo. Aria: part of an opera where the singing is more expressive. Recitative: part of an opera in which singers sing very clearly (almost speaking). Overture: instrumental piece at the beginning of an opera. Opera: musical composition which combines music, poetry, dance, costumes and scenery. Oratorio: religious vocal music, similar to the opera but without acting. Choral: religious vocal music for Protestant church services performed by a mixed four voices choir. Cantata: similar to an oratorio but much shorter. Stradivarius: most famous and expensive of the string instruments. Organ: keyboard wind instrument used in churches. Libretto: the text of an opera Castrati: young male singers, castrated when children, to preserve their high voices. Bach: the composer of the most famous Passions.
