Over the years, voting laws changed to include more citizens regardless of race and gender. Below is a brief timeline: Declaration of Independence Signed (1776) - property owners had the right to vote. Most property owners were white, male, Protestants over the age of 21. U.S. Constitution Adopted (1787) - states were given the power to regulate their own voting laws. Voting rights remained the same. Voting Expanded (1856) - orth Carolina became the last state to expand voting rights to all white males by removing property ownership as a requirement to vote. 14th Amendment (1868) - male citizens 21+ are able to vote. 15th Amendment (1870) - men of all races are able to vote. 19th Amendment (1920) - women have the right to vote 26th Amendment (1971) - the voting age is now 18 years old. 4 What it Takes to be President Judge on the Ballot Article II of the Constitution lays out the requirements to be President of the United States. The President must be at least 35 years old, a United States citizen, and a resident for at least 14 years. Ask your friends and family members what other qualifications the President should have. 6 oing to the Voting Booth Before going to vote you have to be registered, or signed up. We register to make sure that everyone can only vote once, that they are allowed to vote, and that they live in the area they are supposed to vote in. Electoral College The Electoral College, 538 chosen citizens, makes the final vote for president based on how the people of the state voted. The more people that live in your state, the more votes your state gets. Each state has at least 3 votes. A candidate needs to get 270 electoral votes to win.
