7 Course Description SOWK 101 Introduction to Social Work 2 credits The professional activity of social workers in Nigeria and in the world, including a brief history of the social-work profession, its knowledge, values, and skills base, and its cross-cultural aspects. Emphasis on the response of social work to varied populations and diverse cultures. SOWK 102 Contemporary Issues in Social work 2 credits Introduction to social work response to domestic violence, gender, substance abuse, homosexuality, child abuse, etc. SOWK 201 Modern Social work theories and practice I 3 credits Study of theory and principles of generalist social work practice within an ecological framework. Special attention given to the strength-empowerment and solution focused perspectives. Introduction to the generalist intervention model across the micro, mezzo, macro continuum. Introduction to professional social work values and ethics and issues of diversity underlying generalist practice. SOWK 202 Modern Social work theories and Practice II 3 credits Continuation of SOWK 201, Introduction to Social Work Practice I, with emphasis on generalist engagement, assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, termination and follow-up across the micro, mezzo, macro continuum. Special attention given to biopsychosocial spiritual assessment, child neglect/abuse assessment, suicide assessment, crisis intervention, and content on diversity, oppression and social justice. SOWK 203 Human Behavior and the Social Environment I 2 credits Application of ecological model for studying human development and behavior from birth through adolescence by drawing on a number of theories. Explore patterns of normative and abnormal development and behaviors across the lifespan. Examination of the impact of rural and cultural beliefs on childhood development. Focus on the biopsychosocial and spiritual factors affecting individuals, families, groups and communities; and develop the ability to apply the generalist intervention model across the micro, mezzo, macro continuum. Emphasis on diversity issues such as gender, ethnicity, socio-economic status. SOWK 204 Human Behavior and the Social Environment II 2 credits Application of ecological model for studying human development and behavior from young adulthood to old age by drawing on a number of theories. 8 SOWK 206 Christian Philosophy of Social work A study of the underlying Christian Principles utilized by the Christian Social worker and an examination of church philosophy that corresponds to the social work codes of ethics. Students will be challenged to examine their individual spiritual identity. The course will also explore the interface of the African traditional beliefs and the interface with the underlying Christian principles in social work practice. SOWK 207 Introduction to Counseling Skills This course exposes students to basic engagement, listening, assessment and interviewing skills. Students gain the beginning skills to explore the problems of various client systems. Classes include both Instruction and lab experience. SOWK 209/208 Social Work methods with Children and families. 2 Credits Application of generalist practice to working with children and families within a systemic and developmental framework; introduction to primary stressors and problems affecting Nigerian families; and study of interventions which target transactions between families and other social systems; examination of diverse family systems and cultural influences on the Nigerian family system. The course will have a brief introduction to family law and policies. SOWK210 Seminars in Social Work Practice/Practicum I 2 Credit During the Semester, the students are required to prepare weekly reports of the field activities and periodically present written reports as case- studies at seminars under the supervision of the supervising staff. (45 Field Hrs) SOWK 301 Social work methods Generalist Practice with Individuals Application of generalist practice to working with individuals. Professional skill development in utilizing effective techniques of worker-client communication, structuring helping interviews, establishing, maintaining, and terminating effective working relationships within a generalist model. Special attention is given to legal and ethical issues, case recording and working with diverse populations. SOWK 302 Social Work Methods: Generalist Practice with Groups Application of generalist practice to working with groups. Historical overview of group work and introduction to major theories about group dynamics; emphasis on group development and stages; introduction to interventions with groups. SOWK 304 Social Work Methods: Generalist Practice with Communities / Development Application of generalist practice to working with communities and organizations. Exploration of the theoretical foundations of community organization as a focus of social work intervention; identification, analysis and evaluation of community problems; understanding the concepts of power, social policy, 8
9 social change and the community as a social system; introduction to and comparison of community organization strategies in developed and developing countries. Role of traditional rulers in community mobilization. Emphasis on serving the vulnerable and oppressed in our society. Students participate in service-learning. SOWK 303 Child Welfare/Services A survey of services for children with an emphasis on the resources that affect the well-being of children and youth. The impact of class, ethnicity, gender and oppression on children s potential will be addressed. Emphasis will be given to understanding the systems affecting children and the resources available to them through government and private agencies. An introduction to governmental response to current child welfare issues in Nigeria e.g. child trafficking. Contextualization of global concerns of Child abuse. SOWK 307 Social Welfare Policy and Administration An analysis of the formulation of federal and local policies including social legislation, which influence the lives of individuals, families, groups and communities. Emphasis on contemporary policies and legislation relevant to social welfare. Revisiting of contextualization of Child Abuse laws into the Nigerian experience. Students will be required to analyze a policy SOWK 305/306 Social Work Methods in Field Specializations This course focuses on the application of social work methods to generalist practice in specific field specializations such as medical, school, correctional etc. Students will be exposed to the knowledge base applicable to performing social work functions in the various field specializations. This is in preparation for the internship program in the ensuing summer. SOWK 309 Understanding Diversity and Conflict Management. 3 credits Students will be challenged to professional self awareness and exploring diversity. Course will explore conflict resolution and management methods/ strategies between individuals, groups and organizations. An investigation of causes of tribal conflicts and an examination of ethnic conflict management norms as practiced in traditional settings. SOWK 310 International Environment of Social Welfare 3 credits Students engage in critical thinking in relation to global issues. Theories of causation and alternative models of global intervention. Explores the social, cultural (including religious), political, and economic factors impacting social-welfare policies and the delivery of human services in Third World, developing, industrial, and post-industrial societies SOWK 312 Seminars in Social Work Practice/Practicum II 3 Credit During the Semester, the students are required to prepare weekly reports of the field activities and periodically present written reports as case- studies at seminars under the supervision of the supervising staff. (90 hrs) 9
10 SOWK 402 Generalist Social Work Research Project. 6 credits Students employ research methods learned in PHSC 316 and write a research paper reporting data analysis outcomes. Students may collect a small-scale original data or use an existing secondary data relating to a broad range of social work issues SOWK 411 The Social Worker 3credits An integrative course harmonizing the bachelor s degree experience in to a coherent whole. Students explore significant social work issues bringing their experience and knowledge to bear on the interaction of their values and skills within the major. The course will also address professional preparation and presentation for job interviews. SOWK405 Advanced Theories of Addiction and Treatment 3credits Surveys, critiques, and integrates the primary theories currently used to explain the process, outcome, and treatment of addictions. Covers biological, psychological, social, and anthropological addiction theories. Implications for at-risk, vulnerable populations considered. SOWK 407 Assessment and Treatment of Victims of Violence Examination of assessment issues, approaches, and barriers to effective treatment when working with victims of domestic violence, adult survivors of sexual abuse, victims of rape, incest survivors, and child sexual-assault victims. Revisiting of ethnic beliefs with regards to familial roles and status. Interpretation of assessment findings included. Short- and long- term therapy options including specific techniques are explored. SOWK 409 Practicum in Social Work III The third field work is an extension of the social work practicum SOWK 210 and 310. The students will have an opportunity to participate in an ongoing or one time intervention programs and activities in the local government, community or other welfare agencies. The students are to submit documentations of their experiences at the various levels of the interventions. (180 man-hours) SOWK 413 Social Work and Legal Systems 2 Credits The focus of this course is to acquaint the social work student with the interface between social work practice and the Nigerian Legal systems. The students will examine legal procedures that impact service delivery as well as legislations that affect social work clients. Students will be exposed to the overview of family and child laws. SOWK 416 Field Practicum in Social Work (Internship) 12 Credits The Field-Work at this level is a Community social work Practicum which should be carried out in specialized areas of social work practice. The internship gives the students an opportunity to translate theoretical concepts and principles in Social Work into practical experiences needed for program formulation, planning and implementation. Students are rotated over a period of 10 weeks among both governmental and Non governmental agencies involved in welfare services. Students are expected to 10
11 submit written reports and documentations of their experiences at the end of each rotation (300 Hrs). This also will also require that students participate in seminars and class presentations that reflect the student s ability to integrate theory into practice. The integrative posture will be culminated in a comprehensive examination at the end of the semester. 11
