1 SatCure LNB fitting instructions We have been selling LNBs since 1995 and always thought that how to fit them was obvious! But recently I ve had a few people complaining that we didn t provide fitting instructions. Well, that s fair comment and we specialise in making technical things easy to understand so here goes. First, if you are replacing an existing LNB, it s good idea to touch the dish as little as possible. If the dish is already aligned correctly, you don t want to move it even a fraction of a degree! So, make a careful note of the position of the LNB. There are often two possible adjustments. 1. Focus - the LNB can be slid back and forth to set its exact distance from the dish. 2. Skew - the LNB can be rotated. Carefully remove the LNB from the dish arm. For a conventional fitting, the LNB will be held by a saddle clamp and two screws. Remove the screws and lift out the LNB. For a Sky minidish the LNB has a plastic spigot or finger which is pushed into the dish arm. To remove the LNB, place a piece of wood or thick card against the cap that faces the dish and strike it smartly with a piece of wood or mallet. The LNB spigot should spring out of the hollow dish arm. Now the LNB is free from the dish arm, cut off the self-amalgamating tape with a sharp blade or remove the rubber cap that keeps rainwater out of the screw F connector. Unscrew the F connector. If it is tight you will need an 11mm spanner. Screw the cable to the new LNB and use self-amalgamating tape or a rubber boot with silicone grease to waterproof the connection so that rainwater can not enter the connection. This is most important since water can quickly run down the inside of the cable and straight into your satellite receiver! If you don t have any selfamalgamating tape, use Blu- Tack temporarily. DO NOT use any other tape such as PVC electrical tape, Sellotape or Duct tape. You could use Denzo tape but this stuff is horribly messy! There are dozens of different saddle clamps in use To fit the new LNB to the dish arm, use the saddle clamp and bolts (put silicone grease on the bolts) on a conventional dish. On a Sky minidish, slide the LNB spigot into the hollow dish arm, giving it a sharp tap if necessary. Some minidish LNBs come with an adapter to make the spigot larger. For most LNBs this adapter must be pushed into the dish arm first. Then push the LNB spigot into the adapter. Page 1

2 Installing Sky Digital Satellite TV How to fit 'F' Connectors to coaxial cable Take a knife and hold it against the plastic sleeving of the cable while you bend the cable over your index finger, holding it with thumb and middle finger. Move the knife gently back and forth until the plastic begins to split. Turn the cable and continue the split until you can remove about 25mm of plastic sleeve from the end. Be careful not to cut the braided copper wires inside! Pull off the plastic cover. Separate the braided copper wires. Cut off the exposed metal foil shield. Cut off the white plastic insulation to expose the inner wire core, leaving about 3mm of white plastic insulation. This reduces the risk of the copper strands touching the inner wire core, which must never happen! Push the copper strands back over the outer sheath. Now here's the trade secret! coat the strands with silicone grease or vaseline. (Silicone grease is better for outdoor use as it's waterproof). page 2

3 Installing Sky Digital Satellite TV Screw an 'F' connector over it as far as it will go. Make sure that the inner wire core can not touch the braided copper wires. Cut off the exposed copper strands. Use sharp cutters to cut the inner wire core to leave about 3mm exposed. Make this cut at a 45 degree angle to make a point. This makes it easier to push the wire into a connector without risk of damage or bending the wire. Be careful not to cut yourself on this sharp point! To finish off an indoor connector, you can fit a small piece of heatshrink tube or some self-amalgamating tape to cover the copper strands. This will protect your fingers when you are handing the connector. A push-on 'F' plug adaptor. A right-angle 'F' adaptor. Outdoor 'F' connectors MUST be sealed to keep water out, otherwise it will run through the cable, damaging the inside of the LNB and the satellite receiver. Water runs VERY quickly through coaxial cable by "capillary action". Be sure to use Self Amalgamating Tape or a rubber boot. page 3

4 Aligning the dish If your dish needs realigning then, provided that it is only slightly misaligned, you can achieve perfect alignment by using your Sky Digibox. Connect a portable TV to your Digibox with a cable long enough to reach. Position the portable TV in a window close to the dish or tie it to the ladder (care!) wgere you can see it. Don t bother to try the wife looks and shouts instructions method. It doesn t work!) Select the Digibox signal menu by pressing [services] 4 6. set the dish to give maximum signal. Set the LNB focal position (if adjustable) to give maximum signal. Now rotate the LNB clockwise from vertical to give maximum signal quality. If you are getting no signal at all, then you may need to use a meter to locate the satellite position first. If you are getting odd signal readings, the inner cable wire might not be making connection in the LNB. For full information about installing a Sky Digital system, please read our ebook. Note: Some LNBs are fitted with a sliding shower cover. This cover keeps direct rain off the connections but does not protect against condensation. You should not use the shower cover with boots. Either use it and use plenty of silicone grease in and around the 'F' connectors or else remove it and use the rubber boots with silicone grease. If the LNB outlets are spaced too close together to permit adjacent boots to fit, you can trim away excess rubber with a sharp blade. Unfortunately, we never know what LNB will be supplied as they change from month to month. The warehouse will pack whatever happens to be available. Page 4
