12 Electricity Consumption In 2013, China s electricity consumption reached 5300 TWh with a year-on-year increase rate of 9.1% since 1978 In the future, the electricity consumption pattern will be deeply influenced by its urbanization, industrialization and the technological breakthroughs in renewable and energy efficiency. 14 Smart Grid and Smart City Smart grid implementation is to achieve sustainable, marketable, affordable, reliable and technological advanced electrical system Smart city is the integration of Internet of Things and other new generation of information technology and application. Its main role is to make city life more intelligent, efficient use of resources, increase energy saving, improve service delivery and quality of life, reduce cost, support innovation for low-carbon economy and innovative processes. 15 Development of China's Smart City. N Since 2011, China's urbanization rate topped 50%, urban construction pattern need urgent transformation. The smart city is one of the three objectives of urban development in New town development plan In 2015, 95% of the national sub-provincial level cities, 76% of the city level and above, a total of about 500 cities under construction have proposed Smart City Currently, there are about 277 smart city pilot projects. 19 Demonstration Project - Tianjin Eco-City On 18 November 2003, the framework on the development of an Eco-city in Tianjin of China was signed The Eco-city Master Plan encompasses aspects such as eco-economy, eco-society, ecoenvironment and eco-culture with consideration for sustainability The development of Eco-city targeted for completion in 10 years and the population will be 350, SESSION TITLE: Building, Eco-district and Demand Response Challenges
20 Development Aims. The Eco-city becomes a platform for the innovation and application of technologies in ecological and environmental protection, energy conservation, emission reduction and green building. 24 Present Results RFID and other technologies have been widely used. E-government and public utilities as well as the level of public management information are continuously under development The demonstration project of smart city has basically been completed. 26 Yangzhou Demonstration Project At the end of 2010, smart grid demonstration project Development Zone started in Yangzhou Economic Zone It included photovoltaic power sources, equipment condition monitoring systems, intelligent substation, distribution automation, power quality monitoring, information collection system, electric vehicle charging facilities, communication and information networks and smart grid visualization platform 26 SESSION TITLE: Building, Eco-district and Demand Response Challenges

30 Present Results The project completed and put into operation in 27 N o v e m b e r 2011 which is the most extensive coverage and the largest smart grid implementation at the time The intelligent substation and power distribution automation effectively improve the safety and reliability of the grid. 31 Conclusions Smart grid and smart city are promoting each other China strategy and experience in smart grid and smart city have been looked at There are opportunities and challenges and the development of these two areas will attract more investment Multi-disciplinary R&D would be essential to minimize the risk for smart grid for smart city implementation 31 SESSION TITLE: Building, Eco-district and Demand Response Challenges
