I study the ways in which contemporary propaganda operates in the settings of the major Russian media outlets. My broad scholarly interest relates to the concept of media endarkenment the term I coined to describe the process of media influence that transforms (in different ways) critical thinking ability of the people who, as a result, are put in the dark, which is a state of limited view of the reality. I ve been working as a reporter, producer, anchor, and news writer for the Russian national networks in Moscow and for the local broadcasting companies in Siberia and in the Far East of Russia. I ve also been a Fulbright scholar in Emerson College in Boston. Currently, under the umbrella of my broad research interests, I am trying to define the subjectivity of people who live under the Putin regime. My publications appeared in such peer-reviewed journals as American Behavioral Scientist and Business Research Yearbook. 2 EMPLOYMENT JOURNALISM EXPERIENCE News Writer, News Editor NTV Broadcasting Company, Moscow I ve been writing scripts (anchor tosses and voice overs) for the Russian national network's evening and morning primetime news shows, covering all major national and international events, such as the Russian parliamentary election of 2011, the mass protests after the Russian Presidential election in May 2012, the U.S. government shutdown in 2013, the Crimean Crisis in 2014, etc Freelance Reporter MIR Broadcasting Company, Moscow Living in Boston, I have covered U.S. events and stories for the weekly news show Together on the Russian cable channel MIR. Among stories I have covered are the Boston marathon explosions in April 2013, the Presidential election of 2012, and hurricane Sandy in October Contributing Reporter CNN, Atlanta, GA I have covered stories about Russian political, economic, and cultural issues for the CNN program World Report. I also participated in a CNN special project about the U.S. Presidential election of 2008, reporting from the streets of Moscow with the vox-pop on what Russians thought about the U.S. candidates running for President Reporter, Producer RBC-TV Business Channel, Moscow I produced and prepared packages for the evening news show Intrigue of the Day and reported on political and economic events in Russia and overseas for news bulletins throughout the day.
3 EMPLOYMENT Anchor, Reporter, Producer TV-2 Regional Broadcasting Company, Tomsk I hosted a daily two-hour live morning show Have Time on TV-2, prepared packages for a weekly socio-political program Rush Hour. Saturday, and reported on local events for the channel s news bulletins. I also produced live broadcasts of the National Championship soccer games and volunteered for the channel s special charity projects. For one of them I hosted a day long telethon to raise money in support of disabled children Reporter, Producer Alpha-Channel Broadcasting Company, Blagoveshchensk I started working at this regional TV station as a news reporter covering local political and social stories. After two years of news reporting, I started working on my own projects. One of them was the TV diaries of a cultural festival Amur Fall. I also launched a weekly socio-political show Personal Account for which I worked as a producer and main reporter. TEACHING EXPERIENCE Teaching Assistant UCSD Communication Department Lecturer Young Media Sharks Camp Riga-Kuldiga, Latvia Field Screening Panelist (Essay Evaluator) American Councils for International Education Moscow, Russia I am teaching department s core courses: Introduction to Communication (Comm10), Social Forces (100C), and Interpretive Strategies (100B). I give lectures on journalism practice skills, ethics, and media endarkenment for Latvian school teachers and high school students who participate in a summer camp. (The working language of the camp is English.) I read and evaluate essays written by candidates for participants in the Secondary School Exchange Programs funded by the U.S. Department of State. I work with the applications sent from Russia, former Soviet republics, and Eastern Europe. Mentor Alpha-Channel, TV-2, NTV I have been mentoring interns while working for local and national Russian networks.
4 EMPLOYMENT OTHER PROJECTS 2015 IABD Communication and Media Studies section chair I responsible for organizing a critical studies side track of the International Academy of Business Disciplines annual conferences. I invite authors, select papers for presentations, moderate section discussions, and organize special panels Producer of a Web-Documentary I worked as a producer and researcher within an international team of journalists filming a documentary about the relationship between Russia and the European Union. Please find the project here: Intern at the English language channel Russia Today During my internship I wrote scripts in English for the business block of the evening news show Primetime Russia and helped the chief editor to search for news stories for the business reporters to cover Interviewer for Public Opinion Foundation I gathered data for socio-political and media research in different regions of Russia, going there and working in the field. I collected information using both quantitative and qualitative sociological methods, such as expert interviews, focus groups, surveys, and polls. I worked as an interviewer for the exit polls project during the Russian parliamentary election in 2003 and the Russian Presidential election in I also participated in cooperative media research projects by Russian Public Opinion Foundation and U.S. Gallup Media Intern Reporter for the regional state radio Amur I prepared radio reports for news bulletins Feature Writer for women s newspaper My Madonna
