2 ABOUT MakeMyTrip MakeMyTrip.com, India s leading online travel company was founded in 2000 by Deep Kalra. MakeMyTrip is the undisputed online leader in India, with its share of the travel market extending to more than 50% of all online sales, evinced by the trust placed in it by millions of satisfied customers. PRE-CLUSTRIX MakeMyTrip had a two server MySQL configuration at two data centers consisting of the following servers in a master and replica configuration. 4 Intel Xeon with 8 Core 32GB RAM Mirrored 320GB Intel 710 SSDs Both data centers were active, meaning they both took reads and writes. A layer of application code ensured that the data was consistent between the two data centers. MakeMyTrip sees 38GB of data growth on MySQL per day, managed by archiving and truncating temporary transactional data into 16 additional MySQL servers. The system uses Memcached and Redis query caching in front of the MySQL databases, Solr and Lucene for search and Cassandra for user-generated content and session data. CHALLENGES 2

3 MakeMyTrip encountered several challenges with its existing setup. The most critical problem with the system was its single point of failure, which put the seasonal web based service at risk of costly downtime at key periods of profitability. During the holiday season, MakeMyTrip frequently experienced 50% spikes in traffic that caused slow page load times and costly downtime. Maintaining the complex MySQL database configuration proved challenging with the resources available, further jeopardizing the performance and availability of the website. Also, MakeMyTrip s seemingly strong archiving setup was actually causing performance issues and adding to operational overhead. Heavy reads caused replication lag between the two MySQL servers in each data center, causing inconsistent updates between the two servers. Consequently, the wrong data could be processed by the application and then displayed to users, resulting in lost business. Perhaps the most challenging aspect of the existing architecture was the sheer difficulty and cost of achieving vertical scale. MakeMyTrip found that its continued investment in the scale-up approach did not result in proportional performance increases. OTHER SOLUTIONS CONSIDERED Sharding: MakeMyTrip initially considered data sharding to replace expensive large machines with cheaper, smaller servers. But with an implementation of eight to ten new products a year, MakeMyTrip determined sharding to be not worth the enormous effort. MakeMyTrip s constant growth and schema changes would make the sharding approach difficult, complex and expensive to manage. They realized it would be a more valuable use of developer time to improve business level functionality rather than create infrastructure enhancements and application rewrites. MySQL Cluster: MakeMyTrip found that MySQL Cluster did not fit well into the dual active datacenter configuration. Both setup and maintenance of the system would be difficult. MakeMyTrip also had concerns with the fact that the system was not proven in production by large-scale websites. 3
