5 5.8 Detailed Planning Design Proposals Roof Plan Layouts 95 Drawing FCB 1268 P 215 Roof Plan Roof Plan The lower four storey buildings B4 and B6 and B7 are proposed to have flat, green and / or brown sedum type landscaped roofs behind parapets. The taller terrace apartment buildings B3a, B3b and B8 have set back top floors with roofs and wall cladding in traditional grey coloured zinc or zinc coated aluminium sheet metal roofing and painted steelwork, which are differentiated from the masonry elevations below. These roofs include large terraces for the top floor apartments which create a more complex modelled roof form. The riverside apartment building B5 has roofs of a similar material to the larger terrace, with the addition of some roof lights over the central hallways. 16 Detailed Planning Design Proposals Building 5 Elevations The Riverside Buildings The Riverside Apartment Building B5 at eight storeys reflects the scale of Bath s industrial riverfront buildings, as described above. The architecture of the building, as suggested in these illustrations, is related in materials to the terraced buildings elsewhere in the site, but is distinguished from them in the form and pattern of fenestration, in the recessed colonnade to the ground floors and in the treatment of the top floor loggia surrounding penthouse apartments with generous roof gardens and terraces. Greater depth to windows and recessed balconies to the facades increases the pattern of shade and light across the face of the building and creates a more abstract nature to the masonry facade. The windows of the centre four floors are grouped in pairs vertically to alter the apparent scale of the building, and are recessed either 400mm or 1500mm in an alternating rhythm. The deeper recessed balconies relate to the master bedrooms of the apartments, giving greater shade and privacy, but are also accessible from living rooms. The facades set behind the masonry are composed of full height window doors and solid panels rendered in an off white ivory colour. Balconies are formed with painted metal fascias and glass balustrades either fully recessed or as juliet balconies recessed 400mm from the face of the stone facade. These juliet balconies include reveal linings and cills incorporating the glass balustrade. The design of this building is intended to reflect a different scale to the terrace buildings, more related to warehouse buildings and the grand palazzo of Italy than to the Georgian terraces. The building is located close to the river, within the Riverside Park, and the design of the facades responds to this location in having a scale in keeping with the size and public nature of the surrounding spaces metres AOD As with the classical palazzo and the 19th century warehouse, the building expresses a civic quality despite its function.
