27 What Is a Research Center A research center is a facility that exists to advance human knowledge about different aspects of the world, such as: Revolutionary cancer care methods at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. Conservation in the Gulf of Mexico at the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Exploration of the solar system at UT Austin s McDonald Observatory. Cold case crime scene investigations at the University of North Texas Laboratory of Forensic Anthropology and Human Identification. 2.24

28 Advantages of Working in a Research Center Students and professors work together to answer questions. Researchers can work together or individually on different aspects of a problem. Community members can consult with experts about real problems and raise questions that may start a new research project. 2.25

29 Community/University Research Partnerships A community has a question or problem it needs help solving. This can be in any number of areas: water conservation, healthcare, pollution, etc. A university research center partners with the community and agrees to look for answers to the question.! Community learns research results. Sometimes a study may generate additional research or lead to a solution that s implemented in the community. The research process begins through studies that often involve community members. 2.26

Large or small, each new research project begins with a question that usually leads to more questions.
