To provide the students with knowledge concerning definition, causes, mechanisms of disease development, associated alteration of structure "morphological changes", functional changes, and complications of diseases in different body systems. To prepare the students for clinical rounds and their future as practitioners, able to promote life long competencies necessary for continuous professional development. Intended Learning Outcomes of Course (ILOs) : A- Knowledge and Understanding: By the end of this course, students should be able to:. Understand the basic facts, concepts, theories and define terms in the field of pathology.. Discuss the main disease categories that may affect the body (general pathology) as well as the basic mechanisms underlying these disorders ( etiology, pathogenesis & natural history). - -

3 . Have an overview of the basis of molecular pathology and its contributions in various disease processes. 4. Describe the morphologic (gross & microscopic) changes occurring as a result of such disease processes in various organ systems. 5. Determine the fate & complications of each particular disease and outline the general management procedures. 6. Understand the role of the pathologist in making the proper diagnosis and help the proper management of the patient. B- Intellectual Skills: By the end of this course, students should be able to:. Categorize and compose a pathology report.. Correlate the pathological finding with clinical, laboratory and x- rays findings to reach the most accurate diagnosis and effective management of the disease.. Choose the most appropriate and cost effective further pathologic diagnostic procedures if necessary. 4. Frame a question, search the literature, collect, analyze, critically appraise and utilize the obtained information to solve a particular clinical problem according to the principles of evidence-based medicine. C- Professional and Practical Skills: By the end of this course, students should be able to:. Apply the rules of laboratory ethics and safety measures while in the lab or in the museum.. Learn proper handling of and processing tissue specimens sent for pathological examination.. Use the light microscope to examine and identify microscopic findings of some selected examples of studied diseases. 4. Write adequate pathological request concerning clinical data and main features of gross appearance of the specimen 5. Write a pathological report. D- General and Transferable Skills: By the end of this course, students should be able to:. Use the sources of biomedical information to remain current with the advances in knowledge & practice.. Gather and organize material from various sources (including library, electronic and online resources).. Express themselves freely and adequately. 4. Deal with the patient as a whole rather than a lesion or a specimen. 5. Maintain a professional image in manner, dress, speech and interpersonal relationships that is consistent with the medical profession s accepted contemporary standards in the community. - -

4 - Pathology Course Contents: The study of pathology is divided into ; General pathology; which is concerned with the basic reactions of cells and tissues to abnormal stimuli that underlie all diseases. 5 4 Teaching and Learning Methods :. Modified lectures; which start by listing the objectives and are given in either; white board, electronic, slide projector or overhead projector presentation.. Small group discussions and case studies to provide clinical correlation and integration.. Self directed learning. 4. Problem Solving. 5. Practical sessions ; the primary purpose of which is to provide a visual aid to understand the mechanisms of disease and to correlate with the clinical manifestations and complications of the disease. Therefore learning concepts rather than only memorizing reports is the main aim of practical lessons. Histopathology slide lab; are used to examine, recognize and identify prepared histopathologic glass slides. Museum of pathology; is providing jars for inspection and interpretation of gross surgical pathology specimens. 5- Student Assessment Methods :. Written exam; whether short questions, multiple choice questions, problem solving and essay questions (during the term) to assess knowledge, understanding & intellectual skills.. Oral exam to assess knowledge understanding & attitudes.. Practical exam "Gross & Microscopic" to assess professional and practical skills. 4. Log book to assess attendance- discussion participation. 5. Quizzes in to assess knowledge & understanding practical class. 6.
