1 New for the School Year AMCP will be moving the student membership year to match the Academic year!! We are working the transition issues now and should have something to you and your chapter advisors within the next month! If you have any concerns, please contact Betty Whitaker at

2 Getting the Word Out - The Key to Successful Membership Recruiting 1. Have fun! 2. Be sincere. 3. Understand AMCP s benefits. 4. Be an AMCP advocate in class discussions. 5. Understand AMCP s vision and mission. 6. Go to national meetings and then talk about it! 7. Be prepared to overcome objections. Ideas you can put into action immediately: Host a booth during registration or school events. This is your chance to get the word out about your chapter. Hand out membership enrollment forms and have several members on hand to share their reasons for belonging and how their membership has been valuable in their studies. Make presentation to new student pharmacists during orientation with AMCP s Why Join PowerPoint. Ask if you can address new students during an orientation program. Use the Why Join PowerPoint that is found online in the Student Center. Talk about the reasons you ve joined, and the benefits of belonging. Conclude your presentation with an invitation to join. Host a reception for new student pharmacists. Consider a special event where prospective members can mingle with current members and faculty. It s a great way to meet prospective members and open the dialogue about membership Create a healthy competition among current members. A little competition can go a long way. Challenge your members to recruit new members. Reward them with recognition and prizes, if possible. Get your faculty involved. In addition to your chapter advisor, identify faculty members who support AMCP and ask them how you can help them share the role of pharmacists in managed care in classes. Use the tools that AMCP sends you. Each August AMCP sends your chapter member brochures, posters, AMCP tchotchkes and other brochures. Be sure to use them as part of your drive! Invite AMCP pharmacist members to speak at your school. Contact your chapter s Diplomat or alumni who are now active AMCP members and ask them to make a guest appearance. Ask them to share their experiences in managed care during one of your meetings or arrange with one of your professors to bring this guest into a class. Be sure to ask them to share how AMCP membership played a role in their current career path. Invite prospective members to your chapter meetings. Be sure to plan an exciting program, so that they want to be a part of this dynamic group. Welcome them at the meeting and engage them in dialogue. Be sure to collect their contact information so you can follow up after the meeting. Get creative. Use the bulletin board space assigned to your chapter to post chapter news, membership information, current research, member recognition, and more. Have fun with this project and be sure to post pictures! Don t have an assigned space? Ask for one! Highlight AMCP internship opportunities. This may be the information that many students are looking for. They can find them at

3 We ve recruited new members. Now what? Now is your opportunity to strengthen your chapter and build a sense of community among all members. Your efforts will pay off at renewal time, if you look for ways to do the following: Make personal contact. Personally welcome new members into your chapter and thank returning ones for renewing their membership. Make a quick phone call or send a short to introduce yourself and invite them to chapter activities. Sample letters are included in this packet. Provide an orientation packet. Include samples of the benefits, a review of the chapter s structure, ways to get involved, chapter projects, etc. Be sure to include Officer contact information. Stay in contact with them. Once a new member has joined, keep them engaged by sending a letter or and offering ways to get them involved as an active member of your chapter. Be sure to include a list of upcoming events. Remember, an active member is more likely to stay a member! Fulfill member expectations. Ask new members why they joined and what they expect to get out of their membership. Listen closely and offer suggestions about how the chapter can help them meet these needs. Increase member participation. Ask new members how they would like to be involved in the chapter, what projects are they interested in, and what they like to do. Again, listen closely and try to identify opportunities for them to get involved. An active member is a retained member. Give recognition. If a member has done an outstanding job, made the Dean s list, or recruited new members, give them kudos. Post the recognition on your chapter bulletin board, in your chapter newsletter, or in a school of pharmacy publication. Communicate frequently. Be sure to communicate with members throughout the year, not only at renewal time. Keep members informed about chapter happenings, national events, and current news via an electronic newsletter or at chapter events. Consider a Facebook group page and invite your members to participate. Be sure to keep it professional your next employer could be watching! 5 Overcoming Common Objections to Membership Objection: I m may not choose managed care pharmacy as a career path after graduation. Response: We have so many options after graduation, and now is a great time to explore these options. By getting involved in AMCP, you ll learn more about the critical role that pharmacists play in managed care. Your involvement in AMCP will expose you to a whole new world of opportunities to you as begin to determine life after graduation. And, don t forget, managed care influences every facet of pharmacy practice. The more you learn now the better prepared you will be! AMCP has a great brochure that speaks to the many Roles of Pharmacist in managed health care organizations as well. Take a look at it online and you will see how many options there are in managed care pharmacy. Objection: Dues are too expensive. Response: I once felt that way, too; but, then I learned how much AMCP does and the many benefits it offers me. From internships to current news to networking with managed care professionals that may help shape my career, there s a wealth of benefits. As a student pharmacist member, I have found that I get so much in return for my dues. It s a great way to explore a career in managed care pharmacy. And, don t forget we have a chapter right here. We host many events that give you even great exposure to pharmacists in managed care practice. Objection: I don t have time to get involved. Response: As student pharmacists, we have so many demands on our time. I have found that many of the exclusive members-only resources have actually saved me time as I do research for my classes. I also have found that some volunteer opportunities require very little time. Additionally, it s been a great way to expand and build my professional network which will pay off when it is time to look for a job! Objection: I belong to another association. Response: You also may want to consider joining AMCP. As student pharmacists, now is the best time to explore our career options. AMCP membership is a great way to learn more about managed care pharmacy and how managed care will affect you no matter where you practice. Think of this as an investment in your career. Not only will you receive the latest news and research via AMCP s publications, you ll come in contact with some of the most influential leaders in managed care. Consider how this may shape your career. Objection: My friend is a member. I can read her publications. Response: AMCP s publications are extremely valuable, but I have found my membership to be so much more than just publications. Being an AMCP member gives you opportunities to meet your other student pharmacists who have similar interests, to interact with some of the most prominent thought leaders in managed care, and to explore managed care pharmacy as a career after graduation. Objection: Let me think it over. Response: Thank you for considering membership. I ll follow up with you soon to see if you have further questions. What s your ? 8 What is an AMCP Diplomat? AMCP Diplomats are AMCP members who volunteer to work with a school/college of pharmacy as managed care pharmacy resource for student pharmacists and faculty. Who is my Diplomat? AMCP has at least one Diplomat assigned to every school with exception of a few schools. To find who your diplomat is, go to the Diplomat Center on and click on the Diplomat Roster. To sort by school, click on the word position at the top of the table. If you click on Diplomats next to their name and then their name, you will get to their contact information. What do Diplomats do with chapters? To some degree it varies by diplomat but here are few examples: Speak at chapter events or help find speakers in managed care pharmacy for events Act as a resource for faculty Act as a resource for your chapter Participate in career days If possible, facilitate tours of their employers for small groups Act as a judge for your P&T contest Advise your P&T team Keep in mind, your Diplomat has a full time job and family that at times will take priority over their Diplomat role. However, they have volunteered because they believe in the Diplomat program and importance of you to the future of managed care pharmacy.
