SQUADS #5 CPW 9 th Grade Science Learning Intentions - Today, I am going to address these College Readiness Standards in Reading: 1. Interpretation of Data Evaluation of Models, Inferences, and Experimental Results Interpretation of Data Scientific Investigation Evaluation of Models, Inferences, and Experimental Results Success Criteria I will know I am successful when I can compare data from 2 simple data presentations, identify key assumptions in a model, select a single piece of data from a data presentation, understand a simple experimental design, and select a conclusion that is supported by a data presentation or a model. Quick Note! Today s question are based on the printed passage you will receive. After reading your passage individually or as a group, choose the best answer to each question. You may refer to the passages as often as necessary. You have 4 Minutes to read your passage! ACT Tip - The ACT Science Test contains 40 questions to be completed in 35 minutes. If you spend about 2 minutes reading each passage, then you will have about 30 seconds to answer each question.
#1. Based on Table 1 and Figure 1, which color of light is associated with the wavelength of light that results in the greatest absorption by chlorophyll b? A. Blue B. Green C. Yellow D. Red Correct Answer: A Blue Rationale: Looking at Figure 1, the solid line illustrates chlorophyll b. Chlorophyll b has the largest relative absorption at 85, which corresponds to a wavelength of approximately 470 nm. Looking at Table 2, a wavelength of 470 nm corresponds to the color Blue because it falls into blue s wavelength range of nm.
#2. In eukaryotic organisms, the chemical reactions associated with the chemical equation shown in the passage typically occur within which of the following structures? F. Chloroplasts G. Mitochondria H. Lysosomes J. Nuclei Correct Answer: F Chloroplasts Rationale: There are two ways to approach this question. The first way is to recall information from Biology and recognize that photosynthesis occurs in plants and that plants contain chloroplasts, which capture this light energy. The second way is to recognize the prefix of the word chloroplasts, CHLORO-. This prefix is also present in the word CHLOROphyll, which is used in Figure 1. One could infer the similarities between the terms and conclude that photosynthesis occurs in chloroplasts.
#3. In Figure 2, at which of the following wavelengths does the rate of photosynthesis exceed the rate of photosynthesis at 670 nm? A. 400 nm B. 430 nm C. 630 nm D. 700 nm Correct Answer: B 430 nm Rationale: On Figure 2, the y-axis is labeled as the rate of photosynthesis (as a % of rate at 670 nm). If the rate of photosynthesis at 670 nm is exceeded, the percentage would be over 100%. There are two areas on the graph where the percentage would be at or over 100% - between the wavelengths nm and 670 nm. Given the choice of answers, 430 nm best fits the criteria as it exceeds the rate of photosynthesis at a rate of 108%.
#4. In the chemical equation shown in the passage, the carbon in CO 2 becomes part of which of the following types of molecules? F. Fat G. Sugar H. Protein J. Nucleic Acid Correct Answer: G Sugar Rationale: During the chemical reaction of photosynthesis, only a carbohydrate, oxygen, and water can be produced. In the chemical equation, 6CO H 2 O + energy C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 + 6H 2 O, C 6 H 12 O 6 is the carbohydrate produced. Carbohydrates are also called sugars. Glucose is the sugar created from photosynthesis. This concept is emphasized in Biology.
#5. Which of the following conclusions is best supported by Figures 1 and 2? The wavelength that results in the highest rate of photosynthesis also results in the: A. lowest relative absorption by chlorophyll a. B. lowest relative absorption by chlorophyll b. C. highest relative absorption by chlorophyll a. D. highest relative absorption by chlorophyll b. Correct Answer: C highest relative absorption by chlorophyll a. Rationale: First look at Figure 2. In Figure 2, the wavelengths with the two highest rates of photosynthesis are 440 nm and 670 nm. Then, look at Figure 1. A wavelength of 440 nm corresponds to the highest relative absorption of chlorophyll a (relative absorption = 67). A wavelength of 670 corresponds to the second highest relative absorption of chlorophyll a (relative absorption = 50).
