1 JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Salary Grade: Faculty: Base Location: Job Family: Special Conditions: Principal Lecturer & Course Leader PGCE Primary Programme Grade 9 + London Weighting Education, Humanities & Sciences London Campus Teaching and Scholarship The post is based on our site at the Campus in East London. The postholder may at times be required to work at any University site or any other reasonable location where the University is undertaking its business. GENERAL This is a key role in the department and the principal aims of the post are to manage and coordinate the PGCE Primary Programme of the Department of Education at our London Campus. The postholder will be work closely with the Campus ITT Co-ordinator in relation to all aspects of the course. The postholder will be part of the larger ITT team & be expected to play a key role in supporting NQT s & ITT Mentors through the MEd framework MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Responsible to: Responsible for: Head of Department The management, quality assurance & delivery of the PGCE Primary Programme 1. Primary Functions 1.1 To lead & co-ordinate the PGCE Primary programme & teaching both on this & related courses. 1.2 To contribute as required to the delivery of the M.Ed and related programmes, to in-service provision (CPD), consultancy and research activities. 1.3 To participate in the link tutoring of students engaged in serial and block school experience and liaise with headteachers, mentors and class teachers. 1.4 To assess, record and report on students progress. 1.5 To monitor and ensure the quality of course provision and contribute to other aspects of quality assurance procedures, including Teaching and Learning developments. 1.6 To attend and contribute to course, departmental and Faculty meetings, including examination boards. 1.7 To engage in scholarly activity and research, and maintain a good understanding of contemporary developments in the initial training and continuous professional development of primary school teachers. 1.8 To undertake any other duties and responsibilities, commensurate with the grade of the post, properly directed by the Line Manager. These variations

2 will not change the general character of the post or the level of responsibility entailed. 2. Secondary Functions 2.1 Carry out such administrative duties as required by the Department. 2.2 Contribute to the wider professional preparation of students. 2.3 Undertake appropriate staff development. 2.4 Provide academic advice and have pastoral responsibility for groups of students. This job description outlines the main duties and responsibilities of the post and should be read in conjunction with the guidelines for determination of the duties of academic employees and the library of academic role profiles. It may be amended from time to time to meet changing circumstances by mutual agreement. It is expected the job description will be regularly reviewed by the post-holder and his/her manager. 3 PERSON SPECIFICATION Job Title: Principal Lecturer & Course Leader (PGCE Primary) Department: Education Grade: 9 1. Attainments/ Qualifications 2. Previous Experience Essential Good first degree or equivalent. See footnote. Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) Appropriate experience in an academic, management, administrative or equivalent role within the field of ITT. Successful involvement in ITT programme development and management. Kknowledge of the ITT Ofsted inspection framework. Expertise in a key ITT discipline located within the Department. Strong record of effective teaching and scholarly activity in a relevant area. Desirable Postgraduate/professional qualification. Teaching qualification. Research Degree. PGCHE(or equivalent)* Experience of the delivery & management of students and resources. Experience of managing a budget. Experience of liaison and business development at a national level in relation to ITT Evidence of ability to work at a senior level senior external clients. Evidence of successful innovation in ITT. 3. Training & Specialist Skills Excellent organisational skills. IT literate. 4. Disposition Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work on own initiative. Ability to manage academic staff to achieve results. Ability to meet deadlines. Subject to the specific circumstances listed above, it is a condition of employment that all newly appointed staff on Academic Staff Contracts with fewer than three years experience of teaching in Higher Education, and not already possessing a teaching in Higher Education qualification, should acquire the University Post Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE). Instead of undertaking the PGCHE Staff with the equivalent of a minimum of two years full time teaching experience in higher education may seek the agreement of their line manager to apply for membership of the Institute for Learning and

4 Teaching (ILT) after they have taught for the equivalent of one year full time at the University. Closing date: 2 May 2008 Interview date: Week commencing 19 May 2008 ROLE DESCRIPTION Role Title: Course Leader Salary Grade: Threshold Salary Grade 8 Point 40 or substantive grade if higher - Group 2 Special Conditions: Three year fixed term contract. Although a base location will be allocated, the postholder may be required to work on any University site. Base Locations: Job Family: London Campus Teaching and Scholarship 1. RESPONSIBILITIES 1.1 Liaison with the Head of Department and Subject Group Leader as appropriate, including contributing advice on resource matters 1.2 Academic leadership, including chairing of the Course Board of Studies, of the staff team 1.3 Operational co-ordination of the Course Board and its modules 1.4 Presentation of students assessment results and monitoring of academic progress 1.5 Liaison with External Examiner(s) 1.6 Assuring the academic health and development of the Course 1.7 Representation of the Course(s) to the UMS Boards of Studies and Examiners 1.8 Counselling students on Course-related matters 1.9 Liaison with central sections such as ADU and Academic Registry 1.10 Contribution to recruitment activities. 2. ENTITLEMENTS 2.1 An appropriate time allowance agreed annually as part of Balance of Duties 2.2 An appropriate degree of administrative support agreed with the Campus Dean 2.3 A right to a voice in management matters, through the appropriate local structures, especially on resource issues affecting the Course(s) 2.4 Initial induction arranged by the Department, in conjunction with the CLT, and including meetings with the Dean of Modular Schemes

5 2.5 Entitlement to attend informal meetings with other Course Leaders, arranged by the Dean of Modular Schemes at least twice a year, to discuss matters of concern 2.6 An appointee who is research active will be supported so that he/she remains so. 2.7 Access to Staff Vision 2.8 To undertake any other duties and responsibilities, commensurate with the grade of the role, properly directed by the Line Manager. A proven track record in working with external agencies in research and/or consultancy. 4 Disposition Good interpersonal and communication skills. Able to work effectively with colleagues. Able to work to tight deadlines and under pressure. 6 Circumstances Ability to participate in occasional leisure- related local/ residential field trips and, or other activities located away from the University.
