1 8 th Grade SOCIAL STUDIES: Class Procedures and Syllabus 2014/2015 Ms. Burke Room 54 United States History from the Pre-Civil War through the Jazz Age. Let s work together to make this an exciting and successful year! Expectations: 1. Be on time, in your seat, and ready for class. This means you have your pencil sharpened and you are in your seat ready for class when the bell rings. After four tardies, you will be sent to the office. 2. Be on task and do not disrupt others in the class. Take class notes or work on an activity or assignment as directed. 3. Respect others and their property. 4. Come prepared. This means bring all necessary materials to class. 5. Refer to any discussions/activities we may have done as a class regarding rules and expectations. 6. Refer to the student handbook. The rules in the student handbook apply in any school setting including my classroom! ConnectED / Textbook - The name of our textbook is Discovering our Past: A History of the United States. Textbook access will be done online through the ConnectED website. Through this website, you are able to access all chapters, assignments, and resources included provided by the textbook. MOST homework assignments and ALL reading assignments will be done through the online textbook on ConnectED. If a student is in need of a hard- copy textbook due to limited internet access, arrangements need to be made with me ahead of time to provide a textbook and modified directions for the assignments given. BOYD Bring Your Own Device Please see the student handbook regarding the school- wide policy for use of devices in the classroom. In my classroom, the policy is that if a device is being used, it is flat on the table at all times unless directed otherwise (along with the policies stated in the handbook). Students may not use their device for anything other than classroom work. Consequences will be given to those that abuse this privilege and use their device inappropriately. Many times, an ipad will be available for each student in my classroom on days where a device is absolutely necessary, therefore, a personal device may not even be necessary on those days. Remind The purpose of Remind is to communicate with parents and students through text- messages regarding important reminders. Please see the attached handouts regarding the set- up and details of Remind.
2 Homework The homework may be any of the following: Reading and/or questions from the online textbook Handouts Other writing assignments either on ConnectED or hand written Research and projects Late work is graded based on the following: Late nightly homework (such as textbook questions or handouts) will be accepted one day late with a 50% grade reduction. Larger assignments (such as written assignments or projects) will be accepted late with a 20% grade reduction the first day it is late, and a 10% grade reduction each additional day it is late. After three days, it will no longer be accepted. So you didn t do your homework? If a student doesn t turn in their homework assignment, they will be told to write down the date, name of the assignment, and reason for not completing it into the So you didn t do your homework binder. This is a way for the students to be held accountable for their missing work. Rewards and consequences for missing homework will be the following: 0 missing assignments REWARD - Homework Pass and Candy 1 missing assignment REWARD Candy 2 or 3 missing assignments CONSEQUENCE lunch detention 4 or more missing assignments CONSEQUENCE - Phone call home and a lunch detention I will be checking the binder frequently. Rewards will be given at the end of the quarter. Consequences will be given immediately. Absent Work Policy 1. Homework due the day you are absent needs to be turned in on the day you return. It will be considered late if it is not turned in the day you return. 2. Homework assigned the day you are absent will have one day for every day you are absent to be turned in. For example, if you were absent for two days, you have two days from the day you return to make up your missing work. 3. Absences due to band lessons or any other school activity still count as absences! You are still responsible for the work you miss in the same way you would be responsible for the work if you were absent from school. It is your responsibility to retrieve your missing work. I will not continuously ask you for your absent work you need to take responsibility! Absent work will be located in the hanging folder for your class period on the cabinet in my classroom. There will be an absent sheet with your name on it attached to the work that you missed with details on what the assignments are and when to complete them. It is up to you to pick up the missing work from that folder on the day you return. Supplies Notebook Folder 1 inch three- ring binder and tab dividers (optional) Writing utensils Loose- leaf paper
3 Grading Grades will be based on a total points basis. The percentage break- down is as follows: A 90% - 100% B 80% - 89% C 70% - 79% D 60% - 69% F 59% and below Cheating and Plagiarism: Using someone else s ideas, phrasing or words and representing those as your own, either on purpose or through carelessness, is plagiarism. Please see the student handbook for the details of the consequences for cheating and/or plagiarizing. Communication: Please feel free me if you have any questions.
