The Parable of the Lost Sheep Part II - Divine Appointments Revision from Previous Lesson The lesson ended with a verse challenging us to stir one another to love and good works have you encouraged anyone in this this week? Remember, the motivation of good works should always be to show the love of God and glorify Him. Outcome of Lesson You would have learnt to make yourself available to the leading of the Holy Spirit to intentionally reach out and engage with people in creative or unusual ways. Introduction The Holy Spirit is the great Spirit of Evangelism. His ministry is to reveal Jesus to people through you and me, so they may be saved. The Holy Spirit is always presenting us with divine appointments and opportunities with people we come in contact with. In this so called busy world we can be caught up in our own world but our response/ responsibility to God s love and grace to us, is to be about our Father s business of reaching people and leading them to follow Jesus. So that s why we need to be aware of the divine appointments wherever we are and to obey the promptings of the Holy Spirit. Our Attitude is to be Like Jesus s Attitude Read Matthew 18:11-12 Matthew 18: For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost. 12 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine and go to the mountains to seek the one that is straying? Q. What attitude is Jesus modeling for us to have in this scripture? Discuss. A. Jesus is showing us His love, compassion AND also His intentionality to go after the ones who are lost from Him. We too need to be intentional in everyday life to engage and connect with people to show the love of Christ.
Q. What are some other words that describe intentionality? A. To be deliberate, determined, purposeful resolute. Preplanned, predetermined, etc. Jesus was determined and deliberate to engage with people so as to show them that God loves them. He did that by meeting their needs whether that was healing, or feeding them food or leading them to reconciliation to God through preaching on forgiveness and repentance. In lesson 2 we focused on engaging and reconciling those ones that had once followed Jesus but had gone astray. In this lesson we are looking at intentionally connecting and engaging with people who have never given their lives to following Jesus. Divine Appointments/ Opportunities Read Acts 10:38 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. The Bible shows us that Jesus was baptized by the Holy Spirit and we see that He was led by the Holy Spirit in all that He did. Jesus was anointed, full of the Holy Spirit and went around doing good and healing those oppressed by the devil. Everywhere Jesus went He engaged with people. People had divine appointments with Jesus. So too with you and me, people need to have divine appointments with God the Holy Spirit in us. You and I are to engage, communicate or connect with people so they will not miss their divine appointment with God. How do You Become Intentional to Engage People Q. What is our saying for The Church Has Left the Building series? A. STOP- PRAY- ENGAGE. Say it together. We must stop and engage the Holy Spirit s help in prayer. The leading and prompting of the Holy Spirit is essential to know who to engage with, how to engage with them, the circumstances and heart needs of the person. Keys to Realise Your Divine Appointments With People.
Pray every morning before you go out for divine appointments/opportunities. Pray for the Holy Spirit s leading during the day for that appointment or opportunity. Listen and look for the Holy Spirit s leading to the person. Ask the Holy Spirit for specifics, like a word of knowledge about someone s needs or circumstances to unlock their heart. Act upon the leading and impressions of the Holy Spirit. Listening and looking for the Holy Spirit Opportunities and Promptings Q. What are ways the Holy Spirit will lead you and use you to go around doing good in your world as Jesus did? Think of the creative ways the Holy Spirit can use you? Discuss A. Get a word of knowledge for a stranger and act upon it; Pray for someone who says they re sick etc; Pay for someone's groceries or petrol; Share your testimony; Share the Gospel with someone; Befriend someone in conversation; Invite someone to Christmas Carols or Church, etc. Testimony of Divine Appointment and Engagement An outstanding story of a divine appointment occurred at the King s Church Carols event in Paul, a King s Lifegroup leader had given a testimony of a friend who had been healed from long term cancer. A lady who heard this healing testimony invited a woman she had met along to the King s Carols event. The women brought her adult daughter who was suffering from cancer. Paul who was simply greeting people at the door and happened to meet the lady and her daughter not knowing his testimony was a reason for their coming to Carols. Paul stepped into their lives and spent time talking with them at the pre Carols festival. They exchanged details for further connection. Paul continued to intentionally engage with the family and spend time with them, their family and the daughter s carer, teaching and sharing on the love of Jesus. Paul was able to lead the daughter who had been into New Age practices to a life surrendered to the Lord Jesus. She was Water Baptised not long after in the Church. Paul intentionally stepped into their lives and because of that connection along with the support of the Church community, the daughter received Jesus and entered into God s kingdom. As well other family members and friends were touched by God.
Role Play This Role play is to practice engaging and listening to someone you might meet on the street or work or school or socially or the neighbour you ve never chatted with. Split the Lifegroup into pairs, so that one person will engage the other in conversation. Imagine you're talking to a stranger you don t know. Before you begin, take a couple of minutes to Stop and Pray, then get them to converse with the other person. Be open for a word of knowledge for the other person. Remind the group for the need to be friendly, genuinely interested in the other person. The importance of using open ended questions that show interest in the other person. What, where, why, how, questions. For example, Where are you from?, What has brought you here?, What do you like to do to relax, etc Encourage people to listen and to show genuine interest in the person by asking more questions on their answers. Listen for language that shows the person is open to spiritual conversation about God and to be confident to pursue that avenue of conversation. After 5 minutes swap the roles around. Have a few minutes of time at the end of the Role play for testimonies of how people felt engaging with someone. Conclusion Divine appointments are for us to engage with people to show them the love of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is continually prompting us in ways to connect with people around us in so many different creative ways. We need to live continually in tune with the Holy Spirit s leading and be intentional to keep Divine appointments with those people. Feedback on the Lesson What did you learn from doing this lesson on Divine Appointments?
Application of the Lesson In Your Life This week be intentional to listen for the Holy Spirit s leading for a person who isn t saved and engage with that person to show the love of Jesus in some way. Intentionally build a bridge for friendship so as to share the gospel at a later time. Or give your testimony to someone or bring a word of knowledge to a stranger. Prayer Father we are ready to be used by You to bring Your love to whoever we come in contact with. We pray for You divine appointments with people. Holy Spirit lead us to those ones who need you. Holy Spirit give us creative ways to reach people with the Gospel. Prompt us to be always intentional to engage with people who don t know you yet. Thank you Holy Spirit. In your Name Jesus. Amen.
