1 Practical Information D-Air Study Visit 3 rd 5 th September 2013, Leipzig, Germany We are pleased to extend a warm welcome to you for our study visit in Leipzig. That paper is supposed to give you some information for your stay in Leipzig. City of Leipzig With a population of today Leipzig is the largest city in the Federal state of Saxony. Leipzig is the traditional and now revitalised centre of commerce at the crossroads of two of Europe s main axes of transport and development. The Leipzig Trade Fair, which began in the Middle Ages, is the oldest remaining trade fair in the world. It became an event of international importance. The foundation of the University of Leipzig in 1409 initiated the city s development into a centre of German law and the publishing industry, and towards being a location of the Reichsgericht (High Court), and the German National Library (founded in 1912). In historical terms is to mention that Leipzig region was the arena of the Battle of the Nations, which ended Napoleons run of conquest in Europe, and led to his first exile on Elba. In the 20th century Leipzig was the place of the peaceful revolution. In September 1989, after prayers for peace at St. Nicholas Church, established in 1983 as part of the peace movement, the Monday demonstrations started as the most prominent mass protest against the East German regime. On October 9th about people were calling for more freedom and democracy in the communist country. This demonstrations increased pressure on East Germany s communist masters to open the Berlin Wall on November 9th, 1989, paving the way for German reunification the following year. Today Leipzig is a vibrant city with a stunning cultural diversity. One key element in this abundant cultural landscape is of course Leipzig s enormous contribution to the world of music past and present. Moreover, nowadays the city s musical reputation is sustained by not just the Study Visit Leipzig - 1 -

2 ensembles based in Leipzig but also the festival and museums dedicated to well-known composers of yesterday: Johannes S. Bach, R. Schumann, F. Mendelssohn. Leipzig/Halle Airport The nineties a decade shaped by rapid growth in the transport sector created a huge demand for development and investment in the region. The increasing liberalisation of air traffic also called for organisational adjustments of the previous airport structures. This led to the shareholders the Free State of Saxony, the Land of Saxony-Anhalt and the cities of Dresden, Leipzig and Halle pooling their resources in the Mitteldeutsche Airport Holding in the year In coordination with additional shareholders, we have been steering the air traffic infrastructure ever since with Leipzig/Halle Airport and Dresden International, besides also taking care of ground handling and freight operations and additional air traffic services for central Germany through PortGround. A success story The Mitteldeutsche Airport Holding sites are highly attractive to investors due to their vitality and opportunities for expansion for years to come. Direct access to the trans- European autobahn and railway networks ensures close proximity to the growth markets that are the new EU member states. Driving the region's growth When investing in our infrastructure we have made sure that a large proportion around two thirds of an investment sum of around two billion euros to be more precise flows directly into local companies. This has allowed us to build an excellent infrastructure for air routes, creating new market stimuli for central Germany. Our airports were an important prerequisite in attracting companies from the automobile industry, the semiconductor and electrical industries, chemical and pharma industries or solar industry, thus encouraging company settlements and creating vitality in the logistics economy. Our visions for the future We know what we want to achieve in the medium and long term. Our actions of today are reflected in our visions of tomorrow. With its attractive offers in passenger traffic and a high level of appeal for the region, Leipzig/Halle Airport belongs to the top five freight airports in Europe. Dresden International is expanding its route network to include the European economic centres and is continuously establishing itself as one of the most service friendly and efficient airports in Germany. PortGround is by far the market leader when it comes passenger flight handling operations, and holds the second-largest market share in the air freight handling for our customers in Leipzig/Halle and Dresden. Weather The climate of Leipzig is often described as continental and is fairly stable throughout the majority of the year. With warm summer weather and reasonably cool winters, Leipzig experiences only occasional weather extremes. Normally, at the beginning of September we have fair late summer weather. Accommodation The Seaside Park Hotel is particularly well-known for its exclusive location in the historic centre of Leipzig directly fronting the famous Nikolaistraße. Thanks to the hotel s central location, it is easy to get to anywhere in the city centre on foot. 4 Moving in Leipzig Public transport in Leipzig is characterized by a dense light-rail system. 13 tram lines serve a transport area of about 152 kilometres, complemented by more than 30 bus lines in large part being en-route in the suburban area. The operating company of tram and bus lines is called "Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe" (LVB). The current public transport tariff of Mitteldeutscher Verkehrsverbund (MDV) is valid not only within the city of Leipzig, but also throughout Central Germany. Only one ticket for tram and bus, that means only one common tariff for all trams, buses, suburban trains, regional express trains, regional trains and also hailed scheduled taxis. A rapid link to Leipzig/Halle Airport has been established with an Airport Express train travelling between Leipzig Central Railway Station in the city centre, Leipzig New Fair exhibition centre and airport in 14 minutes. Leipzig/Halle Airport can be accessed directly by train. FlughafenExpress (DB AG) leaves from Leipzig Central Station and the airport every hour. A one-way trip takes 14 minutes with one stop at the new Leipzig Trade Fair.
