2 5 Purpose of the job General: The Next Generation Sequencing Laboratory has been set-up to establish a sequencing program to aid in the patient treatment decision-making process for a range of disorders. The post holder will be responsible for the organisation and management of the Next Generation Sequencing Laboratory, providing a range of complex scientific and clinical services demanding a skilled performance. The post holder will use Next-Generation Sequencing technology to develop and validate gene test panels. Specifically, the successful candidate will develop and adapt new techniques in genomics to align with the needs of the hospital as they arise. She/he will direct and monitor the outcome of the service provided in the Next Generation Sequencing Laboratory on a day-to-day basis. 6 Main duties and responsibilities To support the Laboratory Director in the provision of the routine and specialist services to nationally acceptable standards and to represent the Next Generation Sequencing Laboratory service as required. To be responsible for the development and provision of a specialist Next Generation Sequencing service, including the provision of clinical advice and interpretation to consultants, their teams, primary care physicians and other healthcare professionals. To work in co-operation with other professional groups within the laboratory. To be involved in the evaluation and implementation of recent developments in Next Generation Sequencing/Molecular Biology, or as required by the Laboratory Director, to ensure that the Laboratory provides a service, that maintains current good practice. To be involved in equipment and method selection, performance monitoring and departmental quality control schemes and in the training, education and supervision of other staff members. To be involved with the enhancement of the service provided by evaluating and implementing new methods, setting service standards and evaluating published developments and innovations. To play a role in troubleshooting in order to maintain high analytical quality in her/his assigned area. To liaise with staff from other departments within the hospital concerning service provision and budgeting. Page 2 of 6
3 6.1 Specific Duties: To be an an expert in Genomics / Next-Generation Sequencing, and to serve as the Scientific and Technical Director of Operations for the Next Generation Sequencing Laboratory. To maintain an area of special interest and expertise in Next Generation Sequencing and to be involved in research and development in that area, performing a range of scientific and clinical work and offering advice and interpretation in that area. To be responsible for a broad spectrum of Next Generation Sequencing services. To maintain high analytical quality in his/her assigned area. To maintain and enhance his/her technical skills and knowledge and keep up to date with relevant new developments in their field of work. To be responsible for the training and supervision of other staff in molecular biology, genomics, and in operating the equipment available in the Next Generation Sequencing Laboratory. To participate in the implementation of a quality management programme, which is patient centered, and which measures and audits performance and client satisfaction. To be responsible for clinical liaison and to participate at multidisciplinary clinical and scientific meetings. To be responsible for communication and to represent the Next Generation Sequencing Laboratory at meetings and to deliver presentations at meetings in the specialist area. To provide undergraduate/postgraduate lectures to students in medicine and scientific disciplines. Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate student projects. To stimulate a research and development environment within the laboratory. To assist in the development of strategic plans under the laboratory modernization programme and other initiatives. To give lectures and presentations on the work of the department and developments in the various fields as appropriate. To contribute to research publication and grant writing efforts. Page 3 of 6
4 7 General responsibilities 7.1 SERVICE The person appointed will: Be responsible for the professional organisation and management of a comprehensive Next Generation Sequencing Laboratory service to reflect the hospital s commitment to patient focussed care and high quality. Perform routine, specialised and research/development work to the highest professional standards, as determined by the Laboratory Director. Be responsible for the quality of their work and carry out their duties in accordance with Hospital policy. Observe the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient or hospital information. Participate in leading and training a team of skilled staff, creating and promoting healthy working relationships. Undertake other duties commensurate with the post, as directed. MANAGEMENT In co-operation with the Laboratory Director: Lead and co-ordinate scientific staff and or support staff within the Next Generation Sequencing Laboratory. Participate in local and national professional training and take part in continual education. Encourage professional development of Next Generation Sequencing Laboratory team members through the promotion of self-learning, formal courses, and or formal/informal on the job-experience/education. Comply with the requirements of the relevant EU Directives, ISO and ISO Participate in the development and introduction of new ideas and methods according to hospital policy and service requirements. Participate in clinical audit pertinent to the Next Generation Sequencing Laboratory. Assist in the production of an annual report and service plan. Page 4 of 6
5 Supervise and delegate as required the registration, custody and stock levels of the reagents and materials held in the Next Generation Sequencing Laboratory Facilitate and co-ordinate research projects where appropriate Facilitate arrangements, where appropriate, to introduce professional and/or other visitors to the Next Generation Sequencing Laboratory Ensure appropriate compliance with International and National guidelines and standards for the provision of services and actively participate in internal and external quality control and quality assurance Participate in the provision of appropriate statistical and management information. 7.3 FINANCIAL In co-operation with the Laboratory Director and with the support of the financial department, the appointed person will: - Ensure most effective use of available resources Assist in the preparation of budget estimates including a planned programme for replacing capital equipment. Maintain an asset register of appropriate equipment, in conjunction with the Asset Register in the hospital. Provide appropriate statistical and management information. Assist in the production of an annual report and the development of a service plan. 7.4 STAFF MANAGEMENT In co-operation with the Laboratory Director Promote by example a professional, punctual and dedicated team with good open communications. Create and promote healthy working relationships and stimulate initiative among all staff. Motivate team members on a day-to-day basis by agreeing goals and objectives in accordance with the laboratory development plan. Maintain teamwork and act in accordance with the hospitals disciplinary policy. Page 5 of 6
6 7.5 INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY In co-operation with the Laboratory Director and with support of the IT Department Ensure the most effective and efficient use of developments in information technology for both patient care and administrative support in a manner, which integrates well with systems throughout the hospital. 7.6 HEALTH AND SAFETY The chosen candidate will: Ensure effective safety procedures are in place to comply not only with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act and the Hospital Safety Statement, but also within the spirit of the Hospitals mission, vision and values, and that they are known and followed Assist and co-operate with Hospital Management in developing procedures to be followed in preventing and managing accidents occurring in the Next Generation Sequencing Laboratory area 8 Annual Joint review Participate in annual joint review with laboratory management to consider: stated objectives and plans of the laboratory job description of the staff member personal objectives of the staff member training and development needs of the staff member NOTE: the extent and speed of change in the delivery of health care is such that adaptability is essential in this position. The incumbent will be required to maintain and enhance their professional knowledge, skills and aptitudes necessary to respond to a changing situation.
