Lesson eighteen TOPIC: Composition a Class Song CURRICULUM EXPECTATIONS: Students will: C1.1 Sing and/or play, in tune, from musical notation, unison music and music in two or more parts from diverse cultures, styles, and historical periods C1.2 Apply the elements of music when singing and/or playing, composing, and arranging music, using them for specific effects and clear purposes C1.3 Create musical compositions in a variety of forms for specific purposes and audiences C1.4 Use the tools and techniques of musicianship in musical performances C1.5 Demonstrate an understanding of standard and other musical notation through performance and composition OBJECTIVE: MATERIALS: By the end of the lesson, students will compose a song using the G blues scale and the 12-bar blues pattern. (Please note that this lesson may require five periods to complete.) Musical elements Review Sheet Class Song Lyric Sheet Class Song Rhythm Scoring Sheet Class Song Melody Scoring Sheet Pitched instruments or vocals LESSON RATIONALE: To date students have been provided the opportunity to score and perform songs in a number of keys using major, minor pentatonic and blues scales. Students have also been introduced to 8-bar and 12-bar progressions using the first, fourth and fifth chords. This lesson is a culminating activity that requires students to utilize what they have learned by composing a class song. (Please note that this lesson may require 6 periods to complete.) SUGGESTED LESSON SEQUENCE: 1. This lesson has been constructed in six parts. The timelines provided are merely suggestions and may be altered as needed. Each part is structured for one 40 minute period; however, additional time may be given as required. 2. Review musical elements with the Students (See Musical elements Review Sheet) 3. Review the major scale pattern. 108
Lesson eighteen 4. Review the pentatonic scale. C D E G A C Root second third fifth sixth eighth 5. Review the blues scale. 4 C E b E F G b G B b C Root flat third third fourth 6. Explain to the students that they will be using a scale of their choice to compose a class song. 7. Brainstorm and list on the board, a variety of ideas that could be used for a class song. 8. Divide the students into groups of four and distribute a copy of the Class Song Lyric Sheet to each group. 9. Have the students complete the lyrics to the class song. Part Have students create a rhythm track for their song. The rhythm may be an ostinato or complete rhythm pattern. 11. Have the students score their rhythm track using stick notation. Part Have the students create a melody for their song. Students should include appropriate markings in accord with the musical elements reviewed in class. Students may compose their melodies in the oral tradition, or they may notate them using pitch mapping or standard notation. Part Once completed, have the students rehearse their compositions using recorders, pitched percussion instruments, or vocals. Part Have the students perform their compositions for the class. flat fifth fifth flat seventh eighth 109
Lesson eighteen Part Have the students select one of the songs and write newspaper critique. The critique should be focused on the lyrical content and the musical appeal of the song. Students should not critique their own work, but instead that of a classmate. The critiques should be shared with the composers, who could be provided an opportunity to respond, explaining why they chose certain lyrics or a particular melody. ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES: Ensure the lyrics of the song are appropriate. Ensure the melody line created by the students is based on one of the above mentioned scale types. Ensure the class song is accurately scored and performed by all members of the group. Copyright 2010 emc notes inc. 110
Musical Elements Review Sheet Rhythm Syncopation: A syncopated rhythm is a rhythm that emphasizes a beat or division of a beat that is not normally emphasized. In short, what syncopation does is disrupt the natural rhythmic flow of the music. Although it is the consistency of the time signature that makes the musical pattern easy to follow, it is syncopation that adds interest to the music taking away what could otherwise become boring Polyrhythms: Polyrhythms occur when two or more different rhythms are played at the same time Rhythmic Ostinato: A rhythmic ostinato pattern is a repetitive rhythm pattern that is heard throughout a piece of music. This can be a one measure pattern, or an entire phrase Articulation Legato: Legato is a musical term that means played smoothly, without any separation between notes. Staccato: Staccato is a musical term that means the opposite of legato. Staccato requires that successive notes are played in shortened or detached fashion. Dynamics a. piano (p) soft b. mezzo piano () medium soft c. mezzo forte () medium loud d. forte () loud e. sforzando () forced or accented and loud f. crescendo (<) gradually get louder g. decrescendo (>) gradually get softer Texture Monophony: Monophonic music is based on a single melody line without an accompaniment. Homophony: Homophonic music resembles monophonic music in that it has a single melody line but with accompaniment. Polyphony: Polyphonic music consists of several melody lines played at the same time. Copyright 2010 emc notes inc. 111
Class Song Lyric Sheet To assist you in creating the lyrics for you commercial respond to the following questions: a. What is the name of your song? b. What is the main idea of your song? c. List three strong characteristics of your class. d. List three reasons why your class is one that should be remembered. Using some of the information above, create your lyrics below. (Be sure that they fit with the progression) Copyright 2010 emc notes inc. 112
