1 Electricity from Biomass in the Netherlands Overview and prospects Using the Netherlands biomass market as a case study this new report provides you with: Electricity from biomass price forecasts An examination of the key players Strategies for realising your biomass targets An assessment of co-fired versus stand-alone units An overview and analysis of current policy developments Produced in association with: New Strategic Management Report
2 Electricity from Biomass in the Netherlands Overview and prospects Import of biomass will be required to realise the future targets. However, when CO 2 -trading is put in practice, it is most probable that CO 2 -trading will (partly) replace the physical import of biomass... Source: Electricity from Biomass in the Netherlands: Overview and prospects The Netherlands has one of Europe s most developed markets for electricity derived from biomass sources. It is a resource common to all countries and seen as being one of the principal sources of green energy for the next ten years. However, it s greeness is still questioned and it is more difficult to market electricity from biomass sources as being clean. This is partly due to public perception and the fact that definitions of biomass can still entail an element of non-biodegradeable resources such as plastics. The report Electricity from Biomass in the Netherlands: Overview and prospects, provides a detailed analysis of the market, revealing the strategies that will enable you to market biomass electricity alongside other green energy sources. By using the Dutch biomass market as a case study, this report will enable you to identify the key profit opportunities to be derived from biomass energy. A Practical Guide The new report Electricity from Biomass in the Netherlands: Overview and prospects includes: Suggested strategies for the realisation of biomass targets, the report examines the future for co-firing and stand-alone units An overview and analysis of current policy developments, tax and subsidy systems and price structures for biomass in the Netherlands Information on biomass availability and the opportunities for biomass energy systems An examination of the key players in the biomass market, assessing their levels of involvement in the Dutch biomass market Expert opinion from leading consultants and researchers, both from within the international offices of Ecofys/GreenPrices and from outside including the RECS organisation. Imagine what you could know tomorrow...
3 The Value Proposition Co-firing of biomass in the This report will enable you to: coal-fired power plants provides the largest opportunities for substantial production of electricity from biomass; key players are the owners of the coal-fired power plants... Source: Electricity from Biomass in the Netherlands: Overview and prospects The Answers to Your Questions Forecast the future value of electricity from biomass, the report examines pricing structures and likely unit prices for the next 10 years Learn from the experiences of the major players in the Dutch biomass market, understand what the key trends have been and how these could affect your market Identify the key profit opportunities, how can you realise your biomass targets - which system is best for you, co-fired or stand-alone units? Anticipate the impact of regulations and policy developments on biomass market development Identify research objectives, by using the report s detailed assessments of the key developments within the European biomass markets to National targets for renewable energy in the Netherlands 0 Wind Solar thermal Geo thermal Cold/heat storage Heat pumps Hydro power Bio-energy and MSW 2000 (PJ) 2007 (PJ) 2020(PJ) Source: Electricity from Biomass in the Netherlands: Overview and prospects Which sources of electricity are classified as biomass? 5 Sample Information from the Report CHAPTER 3: Rules and Regulations Policy targets for biomass energy according to "Derde Energienota" PJ 2007 PJ 2020 PJ 5 0 Domestic wood combustion* Industry Co-firing in coal fired power plants Combustion/gasification Land-fill gas/digestion Other Source: Electricity from Biomass in the Netherlands: Overview and prospects Disposal of Solid Waste from Biomass Energy Plants The solid waste resulting from thermal conversion of biomass (bottom ash, fly ash) need to be disposed of. If pure biomass has been properly processed, only mineral rich materials remain which could be used as fertiliser again. In some gasification plants tar contaminated materials remain, which have the status of chemical waste. However, in properly designed gasification cycles no tar contaminated waste should be produced. If not used as fertiliser and depending on the biomass source or application (contaminated, or used in a co-firing application) it can be put to good use otherwise or it has to be deposited in land fills or chemical waste storages, which may imply substantial costs. If the composition allows so, bottom ash can be used as foundation material for roads, fly ash can be used in asphalt.
