1 Case Study ZyXEL switch solution to support Layer 3 inter VLAN routing Background: A government department in Southeast Asia which is deploying a new network topology to transfer IP packets via microwave asked for ZyXEL s help to come up with a solution. The requirement in this scenario is not only for VLAN tag /untag functionality, but the switches also need to be able to add different VLAN tags from the same port due to BTS (WiMAX base station) Ethernet port density limitation. The 3 rd party s WiMAX BTS are able to separate different VLANs to different WiMAX CPEs and the uplink traffic streams on the BTS will be tagged with different VLAN tags as well. Before looking for ZyXEL s solution, they had surveyed other vendors switches but none of those vendors implemented such a scenario correctly. According to customer s design purpose, the remote sites mainly provide IP Camera service to monitor the whole traffic status in this metro city and then transfer the video information back to the command center server. Data loggers are also installed in all sites to log the information sent by the IP Camera. Challenges: 1. Inter VLAN routing with different VIDs tagged. 2. Routing protocol between different sites to achieve failover requirement. 3. All the switches are connected by microwave in layer 2. 4 Configuration using the Web GUI (Switch in the Command Center) 1. Connect the MGMT port to a PC or Notebook with the RJ45 Cable. 2. By default, the MGMT IP address of the out-band port is /24 3. Set your NIC to /24 4. Open an Internet browser (e.g. IE) and enter into the URL field. 5. By default, the username for the administrator is admin and the password is After successfully logging in you will see a screen similar to the one below. 7. First, we have to create two VLANs for two different route domains. Click Advanced Application VLAN Static VLAN to enter the VLAN Status page.

5 8. Create VLAN 2 and include port 1 in this VLAN, then click Add.

6 9. Create VLAN 3 and include port 2 in this VLAN, then click Add. 10. Go to the VLAN Port Setting page and set port 1 to PVID 2 and port 2 to PVID 3. Click Apply

7 11. Go to the IP Setup page by clicking Basic Setting IP Setup.

8 12. In the IP Interface section, set the i.) IP Address ii.) IP Subnet Mask iii.) VID for VLAN 2. Click Add. 13. In the IP Interface section, set the i.) IP Address ii.) IP Subnet Mask iii.) VID for VLAN 3. Click Add

9 14. Go to the OSPF Configuration page by clicking IP Application OSPF Configuration. 15. Check the Active checkbox to enable OSPF routing protocol and set the Router ID. The Router ID can be any 32 bit IP address. Click Apply. 16. Enter a descriptive name (up to 32 printable ASCII characters) for identification purposes in the name bar. Create area in the Area ID bar. Click Add.

10 17. Enter the OSPF Interface page by clicking Interface. 18. In the OSPF Interface page, select the IP interface that will join OSPF routing and choose what area that IP interface belongs to. Click Add.
