1 Lyndale Secondary College Bring Your Own Device Program for 2015 Rationale Lyndale Secondary College is dedicated to ensuring students develop the skills and knowledge to be a successful member of the 21 st Century Digital Age. Individual access to personal devices/netbooks will assist in providing the best contemporary education for all students at Lyndale. By facilitating Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), we empower our students and give them direct involvement in the way they use technology in their learning. Students at Lyndale Secondary College have become very familiar with using netbook computers to complement their learning, however, funding for the program has ceased and the netbooks purchased will reach the end of their warranty by the end of The College is no longer in a position to fund and supply individual personal computers, ancillary hardware, operating software and educational programs to students. After much consideration the College has decided to implement a Bring Your Own Device program. This means that all students in Years 8-12 will be required to bring their own device to school from the start of the 2015 school year. What is BYOD? Bring Your Own Device, or BYOD, is a technological trend in education and in the corporate world. BYOD recognises that technology and choices about technology are very much personal. BYOD acknowledges technology in education means more than meeting specific curriculum requirements. BYOD is designed to give you, as students and families, freedom to make technology choices that suit you and all your circumstances. How does it work? In 2015 students in Years 8 to 12 are expected to bring their own computing device to school every day. We are making recommendations as to the model of device you may choose to bring. These devices can be purchased through our preferred supplier, Learning with Technologies. Or you can bring something of your own choosing that meets our Device Specifications. There is also some software that you must have on the device. In most cases there are free options for software. You are required to sign a User Agreement that sets out how the device can be used at school. Our ICT Technicians are available to answer questions and to give assistance. However, if you choose to bring a device other than one purchased through our approved supplier, the school does not manage, support, own or warranty the device - it's your device.

2 What type of device can we bring? A range of devices in a range of price categories meet the Device Specifications. It may be a laptop. It may be a tablet with a keyboard. Smaller tablet devices may be half the price of a larger sized ultrabook. You should carefully consider all your options for purchase and lease/rent-to-buy. Consider also that a good quality device could comfortably last four years. Some of the Device Specification requirements are quite particular. If you choose one of our recommended devices, you won't have to worry about whether it ticks all the requirements. Additionally, it's possible you already own or use a device which meets the Device Specifications, in which case just bring that. I'm concerned about the costs The purchase of a device is a major decision and a significant expense. A good quality device may last up to four years and viewed over this timeframe the expense is considerably less. Lyndale Secondary College is integrating use of devices into many aspects of teaching and learning. Your investment allows the school to maximise learning outcomes for all students. We are committed to our obligations as a public education institution to deliver the same learning outcomes to all our students no matter their families' financial means. We have developed an Equity Policy to operate alongside our BYOD Policy. The Equity Policy outlines a number of strategies the school may take, in consultation with you, to augment access to information and communication technologies. If you are concerned about the costs associated with the BYOD Program you can apply for consideration through our Welfare Department. I'm concerned about device security Experience from the previous Commonwealth-funded scheme indicates that students who took good care of their device and considered themselves the device's owner rarely had device security issues. If you are concerned the device is going to be broken, lost or stolen, you may wish to consider specific accidental loss and breakage insurance for the device. You can specifically list the item on your home contents insurance, or you can purchase an Accidental Damage Protection plan for your device. Accidental Damage Protection is available for all our recommended devices. You may also consider using a device locator service. These services include the "Find my ipad" service built in to Apple ios devices, "Prey" for Windows or "LoJack for Laptops". Internet access on the device will be filtered at school and students will be prohibited from connecting to other networks while at school.

3 Actions required by Students and Parents/Carers All students in Years 8-12 are expected to bring a computing device to school each day. This device must be either a designated device purchased through our approved supplier, or a personal device of student's own choosing and ownership which meets the Device Specifications. The personal device must be able to be brought to school on each and every school day and be solely the student s to use throughout the school day. Students and Parents are responsible for ensuring the device brought to school meets all the requirements of the Device Specifications. A device which does not meet the Specifications will not be permitted access to school networks and services. Prior to bringing a personal device for the first time, students and their parents must read and sign the Acceptable Use Agreement which sets out the responsibilities and expectations for use of all electronic devices, including personal devices at Lyndale Secondary College. Students must use their device in accordance with the school's Cyber Safety Policy and the Acceptable Use Agreement. Students must follow teachers' directions as to appropriate use of their devices in class. Each student is absolutely and solely responsible for the care and conduct of his/her own personal device whilst at school or at other school activities, travelling to and from school or to and from other school activities Students must connect their device to the designated wireless data network supplied by Lyndale Secondary College using their own, individual user account credentials only. Students must not connect to any other network, wired, wireless or cellular. Students must not bridge the Lyndale Secondary College designated network to any other network. Actions by Lyndale Secondary College Maintain a BYOD Equity Policy to ensure all students, no matter their family s financial means, have access to the computing resources, inside and outside of class time, that are required by their coursework. Provide an Acceptable Use Agreement to list the responsibilities and expectations of each student and their families. Ensure a copy of the Acceptable Use Agreement is signed by each student and their parents prior to allowing the student's device to be brought to school. A copy of the signed Agreement will be held by the College. Publish a Device Specification that describes the requirements for devices brought to school pursuant to the BYOD program. Provide a wireless network with filtered Internet connection to which students may connect their BYOD program device.

4 Provide support to assist students with establishing network connectivity with the BYOD program device. Accept no responsibility for loss or damage to, or for maintenance or repair required on a student s own device through any act or omission resulting from the negligence or otherwise of the school, a member of the school staff or of another student. Should a student s device fail to meet a requirement of the Device Specification, the school will not facilitate the student s access to any network or school services. The school may direct a student to cease bringing a device to school which does not meet all the requirements of the Device Specification. Purchasing a netbook from Learning With Technologies The College strongly recommends purchasing through the designated supplier (Learning with Technologies). Significant advantages will result from using this option. Learning with Technologies (LWT) was selected as suppliers as they are best placed to supply cost-effective, reliable and durable netbooks. LWT is a Department of Education and Early Childhood Development approved supplier which ensues a guarantee of delivery. Learning with Technologies services around 4500 schools and the College has a long standing and positive relationship with the company through our current 1:1 program. 5 What do I do if I wish to purchase a netbook now or at any stage from LWT? 1. Log into to find out more about the netbook and the supplier Learning with Technologies (LWT) 2. When you are ready to purchase log onto to order your netbook. Families can order through the Lyndale SC portal 3. Receive netbook at your home address 4. Contact the ICT Technicians to book a time to bring the netbook for configuration and connection to the College network What do I do if I purchase a device from another supplier or if I have a device at home that meets the specifications? 1. Contact the ICT Technicians to book a time to bring the device for configuration and connection to the College network Devices purchased privately can be brought to the College from the beginning of Term 4, 2014
