2 Your employer The s (NWHHS) is responsible for the public sector health services in the Mt Isa region. The NWHHS covers an area of approximately 300,000 square kilometres and services many of the remote communities within North Western Queensland and the Gulf of Carpentaria. 3 The Mental Health and ATOD Service are responsible for delivering mental health and ATOD services throughout the. Its primary objective is to ensure access to a comprehensive range of treatment and support services across the continuum of care including early intervention, prevention and promotion. As a component of the Mental Health and ATOD Service, the role of the Acute Care Service includes being the service point of contact for acute substance misuse, mental health assessment, intake and acute community mental health home care follow up. Continued Care Services offers intervention and case management for consumers requiring medium to long term support. Your opportunity The position is responsible for developing and implementing initiatives to assist in closing the gap between indigenous and non-indigenous health outcomes for youth to safely move from youth to adulthood. The position will actively engage youth in an outreach model of service delivery within a harm minimisation framework to deliver comprehensive drug and alcohol services to youth, family and friends. This position will also be responsible for developing and implementing initiatives with youth organisations, working closely with community based organisations and Child and Youth Mental Health to follow up on high risk youth in a co-case management framework, including but not limited to assessment and treatment services in accordance with harm minimisation policy and practice and community priorities to reduce harm associated with the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and participate in all other prevention and intervention activities undertaken by the multidisciplinary ATODS service specifically focusing on youth. The position is community based, and the incumbent will be expected to work with a broad range of individuals, groups and organisations to meet the objectives identified. To be part of a team that actively contributes to patient safety by following policies, procedures and protocols of the. To support continued improvement of health services by always participating in quality improvement opportunities. To excel in patient safety by active contribution to a framework of sound clinical governance. Your role Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in accordance with Queensland Public Service and North West Hospital and Health Service values as outlined above. Promote a safety-supportive culture and consistently apply evidence based practice Follow defined service quality standards, occupational health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe, services and workplaces. Always consider the rights of the patients and other health care consumers. To work alongside community groups and organisation towards implementing initiatives designed to improve children and young peoples social and emotional well being and building resilience. To assist in developing and implementing culturally appropriate drug and alcohol educational activities and resources aimed at improving child, youth and families social and emotional wellbeing. To assist in developing and facilitating early intervention and education programs with regards to drug and alcohol issues within a harm minimisation framework. To connect individuals and families to ATODS Child and Youth Service and other specialised services such as Child and Youth Mental Health Services. To assist with supporting community organisations in managing youth drug and alcohol use, including providing education, resources and support to workers including both Government and non-government Organisations. Create efficient and timely referral pathways by developing strong working networks with youth and community stakeholders. To attend community and youth stakeholder meeting and feed back relevant information and outcomes to Youth Team. Participate in any activity or team initiative as required or directed by the Manager or Youth Clinical Treatment Officer. Research and locate culturally appropriate youth drug and alcohol resources to assist in developing and improving the current ATODS Resource Library. Provide medico legally sound documents ensuring adequate and appropriate case records and statistics are kept. Page 3 of 5
4 Mandatory qualifications/professional registration/other requirements This position requires the incumbent to operate a C class motor vehicle and an appropriate license endorsement to operate this type of vehicle is required. Proof of this endorsement must be produced before commencement of duties. The incumbent will be required to travel in this position by road, air or sea and drive Queensland Health vehicles to meet operational requirements. Mornington Island and Doomadgee communities have an alcohol management strategy that applies to all residents and visitors. Availability of alcohol in the communities is limited and conditions apply to consumption. No private individual is permitted to take alcohol into the Mornington Island or Doomadgee communities. Awareness of cross-cultural issues both within the team and community is required. Some work outside of normal working hours may be required. Potential applicants are advised that the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian Act 2000 requires Queensland Health to seek a working with children check from the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian prior to appointment to this position. Health Care Workers in Queensland Health whose occupation poses a potential risk of exposure to blood or body fluids must be immunised against Hepatitis B according to the National Health and Medical Research Council Australian Immunisation Handbook and the Queensland Health Infection Control Guidelines. Within the context of the responsibilities described above under Your Role, the ideal applicant will be someone who can demonstrate the following: Sound knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and health needs, and ability to liaise with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, various government and community agencies. Demonstrated skills and knowledge in the principles and practice of working with individuals and groups in a community setting. Demonstrated communication, negotiation and consultative skills including the ability to maintain effective working relationships with a range of internal and external clients and to work in a team environment. Demonstrated high level computer skills and must be willing and able to learn ATODS computer systems. All relevant health professionals, who in the course of their duties formulate a reasonable suspicion that a child or youth has been abused or neglected in their home/community environment, have a legislative and a duty of care obligation to immediately report such concerns to Child safety services, Department of Communities.
