1 JOB TITLE DEPARTMENT LOCATION Web and Digital Officer UNIVERSITY OF LINCOLN JOB DESCRIPTION Communications, Development & Marketing Brayford Pool, Lincoln JOB NUMBER MR4103 GRADE 5 DATE November 2015 REPORTS TO Website Projects Manager CONTEXT The University s corporate web team sits within the Communications division and chiefly delivers the functions of the main corporate website. The corporate website plays a key role in driving recruitment. Additionally, the web team work on campaign specific web projects to support key business objectives, social media activity and digital media projects to aid the University s wider online presence JOB PURPOSE The role holder will offer both creative and technical front and back-end web development skills, maintaining the University s web presence and supporting the overall goals of the Communications, Development & Marketing (CDM) department. They will contribute to and develop the technical design (architecture), aesthetic design, functionality, usability and accessibility of the University of Lincoln corporate website. This individual will provide exceptional technical, creative and promotional service to a broad range of user-focused web-based communications. Scope and dimensions of the role Skilled in front-end web development and design, with an understanding of HTML, CSS, digital design and general media production. Will also provide support for social media activity on occasion. Current abilities in / willingness to learn JavaScript, C# and SQL advanced programming languages and back-end development. 2 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Digital Development Develop and maintain the University of Lincoln s primary online channel in its corporate website in addition to any other online sites maintained/managed or supported by CDM. Ensure all areas of work provide a consistent user experience and that they present a compelling digital presence for the University s target markets. Utilise the university s content management system to develop new pages/areas and templates for the corporate website and associated web applications. As a proactive team member, you will work to ensure website content is innovative, accurate and up-to-date. You will deal with requests from staff across the institution regarding new development work, updates and amendments to the corporate website. Communication / Liaison Liaise with staff at all levels to discuss and interpret a range of complex online requirements. You will support and instruct staff from all areas of the university, providing specialist guidance and training on using corporate website-related systems, such as TerminalFour. Work with the institution-wide network of content contributors by providing advice, support and problem-solving services. Work with ICT Services to help ensure the efficient technical operation of the University website. Analysis The role holder will use web evaluation software to compile statistical reports, and interpret web data. Information from such sources like Google Analytics will ultimately inform and update working practices. The role holder will collate data and share it with relevant colleagues and partners. The role holder will review search engine rankings and carry out website performance and accessibility audits, recommending adjustments to content in line with best practices to ensure a high user experience and optimise those search engine rankings. Analysis of trends and developments in online media technologies and platforms will be expected to inform and update key working practices. Web and Digital Delivery Actively seek out new opportunities to experiment and lead the way in digital direction. Keep up to date with trends in digital media, including technical and design aspects of website creation, usability and accessibility. Page 2 of 6

3 Advise on the best use of the web technologies and design elements for marketing campaigns, liaising with key stakeholders. Keep abreast of key web and social media processes and procedures and deliver recommendations on how to best implement new technologies. Teamwork Will support the Social Media Officer to maintain and monitor the University s social media channels, including Twitter, Facebook and YouTube during busy periods. Will liaise with both current and prospective students, members of the public and staff, seeking guidance and assistance where appropriate. Offering support to other members of the Web Team where appropriate. Problem Solving Develop technical and creative problem solving strategies to deal with any complex issues associated with the role and related technologies. Compliance Ensure that all areas of the corporate website comply with the University s Communications Policy, Corporate Identity Guidelines and other external digital communication guidelines. Monitor and ensure all legal requirements are met in respect of work carried out e.g. accessibility, data protection, copyright etc. Adhere to Competition and Market Authority (CMA) guidelines at all times. Other Duties In addition to the above, undertake such duties as may reasonably be requested and that are commensurate with the nature and grade of the post.
