1 Jesus Teaches How to Pray Scripture Passage: Luke 11:1-8 Lesson Objective and Application Children will understand what prayer is. They will begin to learn what to pray for. At the conclusion of this lesson, the children will make a craft to remind them of things to pray for. 2 Bible Lesson Introduction Boys and girls, I keep something small inside my purse. I always try to take it with me wherever I go. I use this so I can talk to my friends or family any time I want to. Does anyone think they know what I m talking about? Allow responses. Right, it s my cell phone. Take out cell phone and hold it up for the children to see. I can take my cell phone with me to the store, to the park, or even to church. When I have my cell phone with me, I can call and talk to anybody, any time I want to. It s nice to have a cell phone and be able to talk to people whenever we want to, but did you know that we can also talk to God any time we want to? We don t even need to use a cell phone! In Luke chapter 11, Jesus teaches us how we can talk to God. I am going to open my Bible, God s Word, to Luke chapter 11. Open Bible. Let s pray and ask God to help us learn more about prayer. Pray that God will help the children listen carefully and understand the lesson. Lesson In Luke chapter 11, we read about one of the disciples who asked Jesus to teach them how to pray. Praying is when we talk to God. Listen carefully as I read what Jesus told His disciples to pray. Read Luke 11:2-4. Jesus used many words in His prayer and some of the words are hard to understand. I brought some pictures with me today to help us understand each part of Jesus prayer. I need a helper to hold our first picture. Choose a child to hold the visual 1 yellow. This yellow picture reminds us of the gold streets in Heaven. The first part of Jesus prayer helps us to remember that when we pray we are talking to God the Father who is in Heaven. Keep all helpers in front until the end of the lesson. I need another helper to come and hold our next picture. Choose a child to hold visual 2 purple. This purple paper shows a picture of hands that are praising God. This picture reminds us to praise God in our prayers because He is special. Even His name is special. Point to the yellow visual. Do you remember where God is? Allow response. Yes, God is in Heaven. Point to the purple visual. Do you remember why we praise God when we talk to Him? Allow responses. Yes, we praise God because He is special. Now I need someone else to come and hold a paper. Choose a child to hold visual 3 orange. Let s name the pictures on the orange paper. Name the pictures with the children. This reminds us that God gives us everything that we need. Jesus prayer shows us that God wants us to talk to Him about the things that we need when we pray. 86 I Can Pray Lesson 1

3 I need a helper to hold our next picture. Choose a child to hold visual 4 blue. This picture has the word sin written on it. Sins are the wrong things we do. What is the hand with the eraser doing? Allow time for responses. That s right, the eraser is wiping away the word sin. This picture reminds us that we need to tell God we are sorry for the wrong things we have done. Jesus prayer reminds us to ask God to forgive us. The Bible tells us that God will forgive us when we ask. Because God forgives us when we ask Him to, He expects us to forgive others when they ask us for forgiveness. That s the next part of Jesus prayer. Will someone come and hold the green page for me? Choose a child to hold visual 5 green. It looks like these children are making up. They look like they are forgiving each other. Do you forgive people when they tell you they are sorry? It is time to find one more helper. Choose a child to hold the visual 6 red. The picture on the red paper has the words Wrong Things written on it, with a line going across it. This reminds us that when we pray, we should ask God to help us to do the right things when we are tempted to do things we shouldn t do. God tells us that He will help us stay away from sin. He will keep us from doing wrong things. Application It s a good thing that we can talk to our friends and family any time we want to on a cell phone. We probably don t need anyone to show us how to do that. But it is even a better thing that we can talk to God any time we want to. We call talking to God prayer. Let s review how Jesus taught us to pray. Collect the visuals as you review each one. We talk to God Who is in Heaven. Take yellow visual. We praise God because He is special. God s name is even special. Take purple visual. We talk to God about the things that we need. Take orange visual. We ask God to forgive us for our sins. We tell Him we are sorry for the wrong things we have done. Take blue visual. We should also forgive other people when they ask for forgiveness. Take green visual. We ask God to help us stay away from sin. Take red visual. Let s pray to God right now. Prayer Time Suggestion Thank God that we can talk to Him when we pray. 4 Review Questions Tell the children that when we pray we often fold our hands in front of us. Ask the children to fold their hands as if they are praying. Tell the children that now you want them to put their hands face down in front of them. When they think they know the answer to one of the review questions, they should let you know by folding their hands as if they are praying. 1. What did one of the disciples ask Jesus to teach them how to do? (How to pray) 2. What is prayer? (Talking to God) 3. Where is God? (Heaven) 4. Why do we praise God in our prayers? (Because He is special) 5. For what do we need to tell God we are sorry? (For the wrong things we have done) Snack Time Rainbow Prayers Serve multi-colored fruit snacks, gum drops, jelly beans, or fruitflavored circle shaped cereal. Discussion Suggestion: As the children enjoy their snacks, encourage them to identify the various colors. Discuss the colors that were used in the lesson this week and ask the children to recall what those colors represented. Yellow We talk to God Who is in Heaven. 5 Pretzel Prayers Use small round pretzels, chocolate kisses, and the colored candy or topping of your choice to make a fun treat for the children. Unwrap the chocolate kisses and place in the center of the round pretzels on a microwavable plate. Microwave on high power for approximately 10 seconds or until the chocolate is softened. (Time will vary with each microwave). Add a colored candy or some colored sprinkles to the softened chocolate. Refrigerate to harden the chocolate. Discussion Suggestion: As the children enjoy their snacks, encourage them to identify the various colors. Discuss the colors that were used in the lesson this week and ask if the children can recall what those colors were associated with. Yellow We talk to God Who is in Heaven. Red We ask God to help us stay away from sin. Discipleship Time Use Activity Sheet (I Can Pray Lesson 1) Questions for Further Discussion: 1. What should we do when we do something wrong? (We should tell God we are sorry and ask Him to forgive us.) 2. What should we do if someone tells us they are sorry for something they have done? (Forgive them) 3. Will God help us stay away from sin? (Yes, all we need to do is ask Him.) 4. Does God want us to talk to Him about the things we need? (Yes) 5. When can you talk to God? (Any time) Prayer Time Thank God that we can come to Him any time in prayer. Suggested sentence prayer Because of the subject of today s lesson, you may wish to try to pray the Lord s Prayer with your children. 6 Dear God Who is in Heaven. (Allow time for children to repeat.) I praise You because You are special. (Allow time for children to repeat.) I ask that You will give me everything I need. (Allow time for children to repeat.) God, I am sorry for the wrong things I have done. (Allow time for children to repeat.) Help me to forgive others when they tell me they are sorry. (Allow time for children to repeat.) Please help me stay away from things that are wrong. (Allow time for children to repeat.) Amen. Scripture Memory Time Verse: Luke 18:1b Scripture Explanation: Read the verse aloud from the Bible in the version that the children will be learning. You always need to talk to God through prayer. Don t give up talking to Him. He hears you every time. Say the verse aloud several times including the reference. Then, ask the children to repeat it with you a few more times. Activity We Can Talk to God Place the visuals from the Bible lesson in a circle. Have the children form a circle and hold hands around the pictures. Lead the children in the following song to the tune of The Farmer in the Dell as they walk around the circle: We can talk to God. We can talk to God. Jesus taught us how to pray. We can talk to God. When the song ends, have the children who are standing closet to a picture pick it up. All those holding a picture should say the Bible verse including the reference. 7 Game Time Prayer Squares This lesson provides a good opportunity to do a simple craft with your children. Before class, make a copy of the Lord s Prayer found in the Game Ideas Appendix for each child. Cut apart each line so the children can glue the part on to the paper. Provide each child with one yellow, purple, orange, blue, green, and red piece of construction paper. Have the children use glue sticks and glue each part of the prayer onto the appropriate color of paper. Do this as a group activity. Read each part one at a time and ask the children which color paper that part should go on. As a reminder, have the visuals from the Bible lesson out so children can refer to them. Have a leader staple the prayer squares together when the children are finished. Yellow I talk to God Who is in Heaven. Purple I praise God because He is special. Orange I talk to God about the things I need. Blue I ask God to forgive my sins. Green I ask God to help me forgive others when they tell me they are sorry. Red I ask God to help me stay away from sin. Learning Link: Remind children that praying is simply talking to God. In the Bible lesson today, Jesus showed us how to pray. Encourage the children to use their prayer squares this coming week to talk to God. Prayer Bracelets This lesson provides a good opportunity to do a simple craft with your children. Use colored beads to make a visual reminder of the Lord s Prayer for the children to take home. Provide a long piece of yarn (If using yarn, wrap scotch tape around one end to use as the needle. ) or plastic lace and colored beads with large holes (one yellow, purple, orange, blue, green, and red bead per child). Before class, make a knot at one end of the string. Have children add one bead for each line of the prayer: Yellow I talk to God Who is in Heaven. Purple I praise God because He is special. 8 Green I ask God to help me forgive others when they tell me they are sorry. Red I ask God to help me stay away from sin.
