1 10 content Management Systems Wordpress WordPress is a free and open- source content management system (CMS) based on PHP and MySQL. WordPress is installed on a web server, which either is part of an Internet hosting service or is a network host itself; the first case may be on a service like WordPress.com, for example, and the second case is a computer running the software package WordPress.org. An example of the second case is a local computer configured to act as its own web server hosting WordPress for single- user testing or learning purposes. Features include a plugin architecture and a template system. WordPress was used by more than 26.4% of the top 10 million websites as of April WordPress is reportedly the easiest and most popular blogging system in use on the Web,supporting more than 60 million websites Drupal Drupal is a free and open- source content- management framework written in PHP and distributed under the GNU General Public License, provides a back- end framework for at least 2.2% of all Web sites worldwide ranging from personal blogs to corporate, political, and government sites. Systems also use Drupal for knowledge management and for business collaboration. The standard release of Drupal, known as Drupal core, contains basic features common to content- management systems. These include user account registration and maintenance, menu management, RSS feeds, taxonomy, page layout customization, and system administration. The Drupal core installation can serve as a simple Web site, a single- or multi- user blog, an Internet forum, or a community Web site providing for user- generated content. Although Drupal offers a sophisticated API for developers, basic Web- site installation and administration of the framework require no programming skills. Drupal runs on any computing platform that supports both a Web server capable of running PHP and a database to store content and configuration. Joomla Joomla is a free and open- source content management system (CMS) for publishing web content. It is built on a model view controller web application framework that can be used independently of the CMS. Joomla is written in PHP, uses object- oriented programming (OOP) techniques (since version 1.5) and software design patterns, stores data in a MySQL, MS SQL (since version 2.5), or PostgreSQL (since version 3.0) database, and includes features such as page caching, RSS feeds, printable versions of pages, news flashes, blogs, search, and support for language internationalization.

2 As of February 2014, Joomla has been downloaded over 50 million times. Over 7,700 free and commercial extensions are available from the official Joomla! Extension Directory, and more are available from other sources. It is estimated to be the second most used content management system on the Internet, after WordPress. Moodle Moodle is a free and open- source software learning management system written in PHP and distributed under the GNU General Public License. Developed on pedagogical principles, Moodle is used for blended learning, distance education, flipped classroom and other e- learning projects in schools, universities, workplaces and other sectors. With customizable management features, it is used to create private websites with online courses for educators and trainers to achieve learning goals. Moodle (acronym for modular object- oriented dynamic learning environment) allows for extending and tailoring learning environments using community sourced plugins. Xwiki XWiki is a free wiki software platform written in Java with a design emphasis on extensibility. XWiki is an enterprise wiki. It includes WYSIWYG editing, OpenDocument based document import/export, semantic annotations and tagging, and advanced permissions management. As an application wiki, XWiki allows for the storing of structured data and the execution of server side script within the wiki interface. Scripting languages including Velocity, Groovy, Python, Ruby and PHP can be written directly into wiki pages using wiki macros. User created data structures can be defined in wiki documents and instances of those structures can be attached to wiki documents, stored in a database, and queried using either Hibernate query language or XWiki's own query language. XWiki.org's extension wiki is home to XWiki extensions ranging from code snippets which can be pasted into wiki pages to loadable core modules. Many of XWiki Enterprise's features are provided by extensions which are bundled with it.the wikitext is rendered using the XWiki Rendering Engine which extends WikiModel and Doxia systems, allowing it to parse Confluence, JSPWiki, Creole, MediaWiki, and TWiki syntaxes as well as XWiki's own syntax. Typo3 TYPO3 is a free and open source web content management system written in PHP. It is released under the GNU General Public License. It can run on several web servers, such as Apache or IIS, on top of many operating systems, among them Linux, Microsoft Windows, FreeBSD, Mac OS X and OS/2.

3 TYPO3 is, along with Drupal, Joomla! and WordPress, among the most popular content management systems worldwide, however it is more widespread in Europe than in other regions. The biggest market share can be found in German- speaking countries. TYPO3 is credited to be highly flexible. It can be extended by new functions without writing any program code. Also, the software is available in more than 50 languages and has a built- in localization system, therefore supports publishing content in multiple languages. Due to its features, scalability and maturity, TYPO3 is used to build and manage websites of different types and size ranges, from small sites for individuals or nonprofit organizations to multilingual enterprise solutions for large corporations. According to the ability to support a corporate environment, it is classified as an enterprise level content management system. Umbraco Umbraco is an open source content management system (CMS) platform for publishing content on the World Wide Web and intranets. It is written in C# and deployed on Microsoft based infrastructure. Since version 4.5, the whole system has been available under an MIT License. Umbraco was developed by Niels Hartvig in 2000 and released as open source software in In 2009, CMS Wire described it as one of the leading.net- based open source CMS systems. In 2010, with 1000 downloads a day, Umbraco was in the top five most popular downloads via the Microsoft Web Platform Installer, two places below its main rival DotNetNuke and was the 12th most downloaded application from Codeplex, six places below DotNetNuke and 13 places higher than mojoportal. Alfresco Alfresco is a free/libre enterprise content management system for Microsoft Windows and Unix- like operating systems. Alfresco comes in three flavors: Alfresco Community Edition is free software, LGPL licensed open source and open standards. It has some important limitations in terms of scalability and availability, since the clustering feature has been removed from the community repository and is only available in the enterprise edition. Alfresco Enterprise Edition is commercially & proprietary licensed open source, open standards and enterprise scale. Its design is geared towards users who require a high degree of modularity and scalable performance. Alfresco Cloud Edition (Alfresco in the cloud) is the SaaS version of Alfresco.

4 Alfresco includes a content repository, an out- of- the- box, web- based user interface for managing and using standard portal content, a CIFS interface that provides file system compatibility on Microsoft Windows and Unix- like operating systems, Lucene and Solr indexing, and Activiti workflow. The Alfresco system is developed using Java technology. MediaWiki MediaWiki is a free and open- source wiki application. Originally developed by Magnus Manske and improved by Lee Daniel Crocker, it runs on many websites, including Wikipedia, Wiktionary and Wikimedia Commons. It is written in the PHP programming language and stores the contents into a database. Like WordPress, which is based on a similar licensing & architecture, it has become the dominant software in its category. The first version of the software was deployed to serve the needs of the Wikipedia encyclopedia in Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects continue to define a large part of the requirement set for MediaWiki. The software is optimized to efficiently handle large projects, which can have terabytes of content and hundreds of thousands of hits per second. Because Wikipedia is one of the world's largest websites, achieving scalability through multiple layers of caching and database replication has been a major concern for developers. The software has more than 900 configuration settings and more than 2,200 extensions available for enabling various features to be added or changed. On Wikipedia alone, more than 1000 automated and semi- automated bots and other tools have been developed to assist in editing. It has also been deployed by some companies as an internal knowledge management system, and some educators have assigned students to use MediaWiki for collaborative group projects. ImpressCMS ImpressCMS is an open source content management system for building and maintaining dynamic web sites, written in the PHP programming language and using a MySQL database. The product is released under the GNU General Public License. The ImpressCMS Project was formed in late 2007 as a result of a division in the XOOPS community. The first beta release of ImpressCMS was introduced in January 2008 and ImpressCMS 1.0 Final was published in March 2008, establishing its new identity apart from XOOPS and incorporating bug fixes, security enhancements and new features. This was followed by the release of ImpressCMS 1.1 in October Version 1.2 was released almost one year later. Major changes were done to the core of the system, hence the longer development time. This version introduced the ImpressCMS Persistable Framework (IPF) in the core, the Content core

5 module was transformed into a stand- alone module, and the installation system had a substantial refresh. On the visual side a new theme was introduced, featuring an AJAX redirect for system messages. Marking the end of a long development period, version 1.3 was released on 20 September The ImpressCMS 1.3 series is a total refactor of the core system aimed at modernising the code structure, making the system smaller, faster and use less memory. This is also be the last branch of ImpressCMS to provide compatibility with previous Xoops- based modules. SPIP SPIP (Système de Publication pour l'internet) is a free software content management system designed for web site publishing, oriented towards online collaborative editing. The software is designed for easy setup, use and maintenance, and is used in public and private institutions. The last P in the word SPIP stands for both Partagé (shared) and Participatif (participative), in the sense that the software is designed for collective online editing. Its mascot is a flying squirrel. It is used both by institutional sites, community portals, academic sites, personal webpages, and news sites.
