1 July 22 Saint Mary Magdalene Updates for Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours, Lectionary On June 10, 2016, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments issued a decree by which, in accordance with the will of the Holy Father, it was established that the liturgical memory of St. Mary Magdalene, celebrated on July 22, will be elevated from an obligatory Memorial to the rank of Feast. The Feast of Saint Mary Magdalene may be celebrated immediately, beginning with this year s celebration on July 22. Because her liturgical celebration was already enriched with many proper texts in both the Roman Missal and Liturgy of the Hours, there are only minor additions that are to be made at this time: The Gloria is sung or said at Mass. The proper readings for Saint Mary Magdalene in the Lectionary for Mass (no. 603) are proclaimed instead of the readings of the Ordinary Time weekday. In the Office of Readings of the Liturgy of the Hours, the psalmody, verse, and First Reading with its Responsory are taken from the Common of Holy Women instead of the usual day; the Te Deum is also sung or said after the Second Reading with its Responsory. In addition, the Holy See has promulgated a new Preface in honor of Saint Mary Magdalene to be inserted into the Roman Missal for this Feast. At this time, the Preface is only available in Latin. The International Commission on English in the Liturgy will work on providing a draft English translation, and work will also begin on a Spanish translation. The drafting and approval of the English and Spanish translations of the new Preface will mostly likely require a year or two for completion. In the meantime, Preface I or II of Saints is to be used as usual (at Ordinary Form Masses in Latin, the new Preface may be used). English texts Mass, Lectionary, and Liturgy of the Hours, pages 2-5 Latin texts Preface, page 6 Spanish texts Mass, Lectionary, and Liturgy of the Hours, coming soon Reflection on Mary Magdalene, apostle to the apostles c.html July 22 St. Mary Magdalene page 1 of 6

The Gloria in excelsis (Glory to God in the highest) is said. Collect O God, whose Only Begotten Son entrusted Mary Magdalene before all others with announcing the great joy of the Resurrection, grant, we pray, that through her intercession and example we may proclaim the living Christ and come to see him reigning in your glory. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Prayer over the Offerings Accept, O Lord, the offerings presented in commemoration of Saint Mary Magdalene, whose homage of charity was graciously accepted by your Only Begotten Son. 5 THE LITURGY OF THE HOURS July 22 Saint Mary Magdalene Feast Mary Magdalene was one of Christ s disciples and was present when he died. Early on the morning of the resurrection, she was, according to Saint Mark s account (16:9), the first to see the risen Lord. By the twelfth century particularly, devotion to Saint Mary Magdalene was widespread in the western Church. From the Common of Holy Women, except for the following: Office of Readings SECOND READING From an homily on the Gospels by Gregory the Great, pope (Hom. 25, : PL 76, ) She longed for Christ, though she thought he had been taken away RESPONSORY Upon returning from the Lord s tomb, Mary Magdalene told the disciples: I have seen the Lord. How blessed is she who was worthy to be the first to proclaim that the Lord had truly risen. While she was weeping, she saw her beloved, and then ran to announce the good news to the others. How blessed is HYMN, Te Deum. PRAYER O God, whose Only Begotten Son entrusted Mary Magdalene before all others with announcing the great joy of the Resurrection, grant, we pray, that through her intercession and example we may proclaim the living Christ and come to see him reigning in your glory. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. July 22 St. Mary Magdalene page 5 of 6
