1 Dear Student: August, 2012 Congratulations and welcome to Cambridge High School and Broadcast Video Production! I am very excited to be your BVP teacher and introduce you to the practice of producing great television through the Cambridge Bears Network. The professional and academic standards you will practice in this course will reflect the extraordinary character assembled at Cambridge High School. You are the first to experience what is sure to be a successful curriculum in Bear country. As a Career and Technical Education class, Broadcast Video and Production 1 will enable students to get hands on experience and explore the various aspects of the television production industry. The CTE department believes that education s most important function is to provide all students with skills needed for post-secondary education and careers. This is accomplished by providing interest-based programs that meet industry standards. Broadcast Video and Production 1 is the first of several broadcast /video production courses that are offered at Cambridge. This yearlong course prepares students for advanced production work in future classes as specified by the Georgia Performance Standards, and gives these students an advantage in career exploration and pursuing this course of study in college. Our career exploration of video production will involve both the understanding of concepts and mastery of skills demonstrating those concepts. Students will be entrusted with very expensive production equipment in this class. Therefore, our professional etiquette and behavior is paramount. I expect you to be engaged in this class, act responsibly with equipment and supplies, and connect the student body, faculty, and community to the pictures, people, and pace of Bear Country. Pens 4 GB (size) media card. Textbooks/ Workbooks Students will not be issued textbooks. Textbooks will be issued as a class set at the discretion of the teacher. The textbook will become the responsibility of the student to whom they were issued from the time they are distributed in class until they are returned to the instructor at the end of class. Any damage to a textbook will result in an assessment for the value of a replacement book. Damaged books are considered to be books with broken bindings, torn pages or missing pages, written on pages, or detached cover. Television Production Handbook. Herb Zettl. Ninth Edition. Wadsworth Publishing Company, Replacement cost $32.00 Course Description: This one credit course is the first in a pathway that prepares the student for employment or entry into a postsecondary education program in the Broadcast/Video Production career field. Topics covered may include, but are not limited to: history of mass media, terminology, safety, basic equipment, script writing, production teams, production and programming, set production, lighting, recording and editing, studio production, and professional ethics. All subject matter shall be taught as per specifications of the Georgia Performance Standards (GeorgiaStandards.org). Skills USA is the CTSO that provides leadership training and reinforces specific career and technical skills and is considered to be an integral part of the instructional program. All material covered in BVP1 will be utilized in subsequent courses.

4 GRADING Homework, Notebook, Quizzes, Class work Test, Projects Work Ethics, Participation and Employability Skills Final Exam 20% of final grade 40% of final grade 25% of final grade 15% of final grade Work ethics grade will be comprised of your attendance, class participations, and adherence to classroom polices and rules of the BVP program. GRADING SCALE DEADLINE POLICY Letter Grade Numeric Scale A B C F Below 70 Meeting deadlines is central to the broadcasting industry. Therefore, deadlines for all assignments are absolute. If you are late with an assignment, you must be professional and accountable and convince me not to fire you with a zero for the assignment. MAKE-UP WORK For assignments not completed by the desired completion date due to absence or extenuating circumstances, it is the student s responsibility to make contact with the teacher to request and initiate all make-up work. For students who are not absent, the deadline policy will be followed. IF MR. SCHNEIDER IS ABSENT Students will be expected to stay in the classroom and work on the lesson plan presented by the substitute teacher. No student will enter the editing bays, control room, or studio in my absence NO EXCEPTIONS. ATTENDANCE POLICY- Students need to read and be familiar with the Cambridge High School attendance policy found in the Academic Agenda.

5 TARDY POLICY You will be expected to be on time for this class. Being late in the broadcasting industry will cost you your job, plain and simple. Being on time means being ready to go when the bell sounds; it does not mean walking through the door when the bell sounds. Therefore, everyone will be expected to be in their seats and ready for the lesson 90 seconds prior to the start of class. Any student walking into class after the bell sounds: 1st offense warning 2nd offense parent contact 3rd offense detention Each additional offense referral to administration RECOVERY POLICY Fulton County policy regarding recovery is as follows: Opportunities designed to allow students to recover from a low or failing cumulative grade will be allowed when all work required to date has been completed and the student has demonstrated a legitimate effort to meet all course requirements including attendance. Students should contact the teacher concerning recovery opportunities. Teachers are expected to establish a reasonable time period for recovery work to be completed during the semester. All recovery work must be directly related to course objectives and must be completed ten school days prior to the end of the semester. Teachers will determine when and how students with extenuating circumstances may improve their grades. CLASSROOM POLICIES 1. Treat others with respect at all times. Your professionalism is expected in this businesslike atmosphere. 2. Finish and dispose of all food, drink and gum in the hallway trash bins before entering the classroom. 3. Class starts promptly at the scheduled time. Be in your seat and ready for instruction. 4. Keep your area neat and clean at all times. 5. Always be prepared for class with notebook, pen and paper. 6. If you need to speak, raise your hand and wait to be recognized. 7. Our environment can be unpredictable; roll with the changes.

6 HONOR CODE (as printed in your Academic Agenda) Every Cambridge High School student is honor bound to refrain from lying, cheating, and stealing. Lying is the student s intentional falsification or denial of fact or the student s intentional creation of a false impression. Cheating is giving, receiving, or attempting either to give or receive unauthorized help that could result in an unfair advantage in student s completions of schoolwork. Cheating is the representation of another s work as being one s own. Stealing is the taking of anything without the consent of the owner. Teachers may have students sign a pledge that they have neither given nor received any help or assistance on a test, activity, or examination. When students are aware of an Honor Code violation, they should talk with the person involved and should report the violation to a teacher or an administrator. Teachers are responsible for both handing and reporting Honor Code violations. The degree of judgment will vary with the severity of the infraction. Teachers will deal with Honor Code infractions regarding homework, class assignments, and quizzes; administrators will meet with student, parent (s), and teacher to deal with infractions regarding tests, research and major papers, etc. Students will receive a zero on the assignment and may receive further disciplinary action. Honor Code violations will result in dismissal from the National Honor Society, and Beta Club. They may jeopardize grades, extracurricular participation, and faculty-based selections. CAMBRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL TECHNOLOGY POLICY- Students need to read and be familiar with the Cambridge High School Technology policy found in the Academic Agenda. VIDEO VIEWING GUIDELINES This class offers the teacher many opportunities to inquorate the viewing of videos in the classroom. These videos include showing selected clips from related areas of the broadcasting and film industries, or viewing movies in their entirety. Any video rated PG or PG-13 will have prior approval from administration. Any movie with another rating will not be shown without a permission slip. If you have any concerns about the video viewing, please indicate the concern on your signature form.
