Session Objectives Discuss IOM recommendations on leadership Examine role for nursing informatics Learn more about how to lead change through the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action

Why Now

Why Now? Transformed Health Care System Needs Nursing Leadership

Affordable Care Act New delivery settings Accountable Care Organizations Patient-Centered Medical Home Payment models Opportunities for nurses to provide: Care coordination Chronic disease management Health coaching Transitional care Prevention

Why Now? Opinion Leaders Want Nursing Leadership Gallup poll: Nursing Leadership from Bedside to Boardroom: Opinion Leaders Perceptions Nurses ranked lowest among professions and groups who will influence health care transformation in next 5-10 years. Top barriers to nurses influence and leadership were not important decision makers and physicians are revenue generators. Majority say nurses should have more influence in planning, policy and management. 7

Why Now? Nursing Leadership in the Boardroom Assuming a Leadership Role What, if anything, do you think could be done to ensure that nurses take on more leadership in improving health status and delivering health care services in the United States today? 8

Why Now? Nurses Underrepresented on Boards Nurses account for fewer than 2.3% of boards seats in community health systems nationwide 23% Physician Members 2% Nurse Members 75% Other Members Prybil, L.D., Engaging Nurses in Governing Hospitals and Health Systems, J Nurse Care Qual. Vol. 24, No. 1, pp 5-9. copyright

Why Now? IOM Calls for New Vision of Health Care 2010 landmark Institute of Medicine report is catalyst for

Campaign Vision All Americans have access to high-quality, patient-centered care in a health care system where nurses contribute as essential partners in achieving success.

Initiative of AARP, the AARP Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Launched in December 2007 Mission: Ensure all Americans have a highly skilled nurse when and where they need one.

Campaign for Action Pillars Advancing Education Transformation Removing Barriers to Practice and Care Interprofessional Collaboration Nursing Leadership Diversity Data

IOM Future of Nursing Report: Recommendations on Leadership Prepare and enable nurses to lead change to advance health: Nurses should take responsibility for their personal and professional growth by continuing their education and seeking opportunities to develop and exercise their leadership skills. Nursing associations should provide leadership development, mentoring programs, and opportunities to lead for all their members. Nursing education programs should integrate leadership theory and business practices across their curricula, including clinical practice. Public, private, and governmental health care decision makers at every level should include representation from nursing on boards, on executive management teams, and in other key leadership positions.

IOM Future of Nursing Report: Recommendations on Leadership Expand opportunities for nurses to lead and diffuse collaborative improvement efforts: CMMI should support the development and evaluation of models of payment and care delivery that use nurses in an expanded and leadership capacity to improve health outcomes and reduce costs. Private and public funders should collaborate to advance research models of care and innovative solutions, including technology, that will enable nurses to contribute to improved health and health care. Health care organizations should support and help nurses in taking the lead in developing and adopting innovative, patient-centered care models.

IOM Future of Nursing Report: Recommendations on Leadership Expand opportunities for nurses to lead and diffuse collaborative improvement efforts: Health care organizations should engage nurses and other front-line staff to work with developers and manufacturers in the design, development, purchase, implementation, and evaluation of health information technology products. Nursing education programs and in particular nursing associations should provide entrepreneurial professional development to enable nurses to initiate programs and businesses that will contribute to improved health and health care.
