2 Let s Talk EARLY ARRIVAL (before service) Have some upbeat music playing and welcome children warmly. Teachers should take this time to engage the children in conversation. Ask them about their week, school, and home. Begin to establish relationships. BEGIN CLASS (service time) Introduce yourself and your assistants. Before the discussion questions, PRAY that the Lord will bless your time together. RELATE it : : : ask and discuss the following questions 1 Have you ever gotten hurt? happened? 3 CONNECTit CONNECT it : : : SAY That last question may sound ridiculously funny, but it happened in the Bible. Someone had an illness. He was born blind and he came to Jesus for help. Jesus didn t give him medicine, or bandage his eyes; He spit and gave him mud. Did the man get angry? Did he get an infection from the mud? Did Jesus heal Him? Let s watch Virtuality now and find out why Jesus did this and, more importantly, what happened afterward. 4 Let s Talk Bible BIBLE STORY : : : Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind John 9:1 12 BE PREPARED Read the Bible story and study the background information at home. The background information is provided to add insight to your lesson, so some of it might not be appropriate for all age groups. Before you begin the lesson, in your own words, tell the appropriate background information for your class age group. GAME RULES Divide your class into two teams (boys vs. girls or one half of the room against the other). Have the children take out their Bibles (NIV preferred) to follow along as you read the Scriptures, and so that you can help them find the answers. They may share Bibles, if necessary. Assign a captain for each team whose job will be to give the team s final answer. Award 10 points to the first team whose captain raises his or her hand and has the correct answer. Award 50 points for the bonus questions. If needed, give the verse reference locations. BACKGROUND information : : : SAY IT in your own words Many people who thought themselves to be devoted followers of God and the Law were really very removed from the truth. Jesus wanted to correct their twisted beliefs and point people back to the truth of the scriptures. Many of the things Jesus said or did clashed with what had become the common way of thinking. One of these thoughts was that a person who suffered did so because he was being punished for a sin he or his parents had committed. As Jesus and His disciples were walking along one day, they came across a man who had been blind from birth. His disciples wanted to know why the man was blind. Did he sin or did his parent s sin? They asked. Jesus answered neither. God allowed this man to be born blind so that one day Jesus would come along and show God s goodness and miraculous power. Let s go to the Bible and find out exactly what happened. READ IT : : : read from NIV Bible Open your Bibles and follow along as I read John 9:1 5 out loud. 6 BONUS QUESTION : : : award 50 points for correct answer Give the teams time to figure this out. If needed, give them the verse reference locations. BONUSQUESTION Jesus healed more than this one man from blindness. The outcome was the same (they were miraculously healed) but the methods were different. 11 Find one other way Jesus healed someone from blindness? Answer: Jesus healed a few men from blindness by simply touching their eyes (Matthew 9:27 30). Jesus healed one man after spitting in His eyes; no mud was used (Mark 8:22-25). Another time Jesus healed a blind man by simply telling him that he was healed (Mark 10:51-52). Jesus healed many others from blindness, but the methods aren t recorded (i.e., Matthew 12:22; Matthew 15:30; Matthew 21:14; Luke 7:22). CONNECTIT MEMORYVERSE CONNECT it : : : SAY There is no formula or miracle-potion to heal someone from blindness or anything else. The Bible doesn t have a book of spells for a person to recite and be healed. Jesus didn t even heal the same way every time. As we just learned, He used mud, spit, water or He simply said they were healed. Jesus healed differently each time because He didn t want people to think the power of healing was in a method; the power comes from God alone. We don t really know why He sometimes used things like mud or water, but we do know this... Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. James 1:17 Do we see miracle cures today? Absolutely. Jesus is in heaven preparing for us, but we do have the Holy Spirit with us. We read in Acts 5:15 that Peter miraculously healed many people in the name of Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 4:10). The people s faith was so strong that they believed that if Peter s shadow passed by the sick they would be healed, and they were. Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by evil spirits, and all of them were healed (Acts 5:16). lesson 1 2 nd 5 th grade page 10

7 We live in a sinful fallen world and we do see bad things all around us. But, someday all the bad will be gone and the world will be restored to the very good condition of God s original plan, from before sin entered. Everything good is from God; always was, always will be. PRAYER LET S PRAY : : : SAY Heavenly Father, Thank You for Your goodness. Thank You for all the grace You show us and the gifts You give us.
