2 Overview New Power and Flexibility The MELLEN MILA Distributed Controller packs new powerful features in a remote package. Unmatched application power includes: Built in relays and fuses, easy to program ramps using time to setpoint or ramp at a specified rate to setpoint. Profiles with 50 separate ramp / soak segments. Temperature dependent PIDs with new features like Asymmetric PIDs and Autofade PIDs. Application flexibility is assured by multiple supported communications methods (USB, RS232, RS485, TTL Serial), universal AC power supply, six thermocouple based control channels with relays or voltage outs and multiple digital outputs.. 3 Miscellaneous Features Digital Outputs Not in use input channels can be configured as Digital Outputs. Additionally there are two separate Digital outputs available. Universal Switching Power - Operates on any line voltage from 85 to 264 Vac 50/60 Hz without jumpers. Outputs and Control Output Types - The MILA supports several different output types: Solid State Relays (18 amps, built-in on WR model) Pulse Train (Time proportional) support for switching larger solid-state relays DC Voltage Output Control Algorithm The MILA uses a Temperature Dependent PID format. Different PID values are available for every 100 degrees of temperature. For easier PID programming, MELLEN Proprietary AutoFade PIDs allow the user to set the bottom temperature range values and the top temperature range values. Once set, the system will automatically adjust the PIDs for every degree of temperature change, resulting in smooth uninterrupted control. Asymmetric PIDs allow the user to set a ratio between the effect of the PIDs when the temperature is above setpoint vs when the temperature is below setpoint. Your furnace doesn t cool as quickly as it heats, why should your PID respond the same for both conditions? 5 control modes: Manual Set percent power out (open loop) Ramp Setpoint Set a setpoint and the ramp rate to use to get there (Degrees C / Minute) Time to Setpoint Set a setpoint and time to take to get there in minutes Setpoint set the setpoint and the system will go to that temperature as quickly as it can Profile Download up to 50 segments with each channel able to ramp or soak for each segment. Once the system receives the START command, it will execute the profile. Active Cooling: The MILA supports configuring channels as Active Cooling channels (MELLEN Patent pending US Patent Application No.13/729,201). When configured as an Active Cooling channel, the MILA will automatically control the cooling level to insure that the furnace cools up to 20 times faster than a standard furnace or creates gradients that are much higher than normal furnaces are capable of generating. 4 Active Leveling (Optional): Active leveling will use the capabilities of the MILA and Active Cooling to create a more uniform hot zone. This will allow the user to create a flat zone that is far more uniform than in a furnace of a standard design. Command Structure: The MILA responds to simple ASCII commands sent over multiple types of communication protocols. The commands are completely detailed in the MILA Command Reference. Operator Interface: Optional ipad, Windows and Mac OS X interfaces are available. Labview as well as any system that supports USB, RS232, RS485 or TTL Serial out will also be able to communicate with MILA. (WiFi and Ethernet options available soon) The optional operator interface provides readouts for each input, settings for control mode, power out and profile steps.
