THE ACCOMODATION SUPPLY The area between the province of Ferrara and Ravenna presents a rich, complex and varied accommodation offer. Along with Cervia s powerful hotel accommodation offer that represents an important part of the over number of beds, we can find a huge offer of vacant houses for tourists in Comacchio, that altogether totals over beds. Among the different kinds of offers in the territory there are also, farm holidays, bed and breakfast, campsites etc. SALTWORKS

CERVIA SALTWORKS, THE PRESENT OFFERT Cervia s saltpan actually reaches a total of over visitors the most part of which are students. The saltpan has been managed by the Parco delle Saline company since 2003 and has improved the level of its valorization and improved the promotion policies of the site. An important visiting center was realised along with, some effective merchandising policies and several itineraries combined with touristic offers for schools and individuals.
COMACCHIO SALTWORKS, THE PRESENT OFFERT Comacchio s saltpans actually totals about 800 visitors per year. They are first of all birdwatchers and photographers. The tourism offer, and the promotional policies of Comacchio saltpans are still being outlined.
SALTPANS SWOT ANALYSIS Swot is the acronym for: Strenghts, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats, that is the formulation of strengths and weaknesses (internal factors), of opportunities, of risks and of threats (external factors). The general aim of the Swot analysis is to clarify and to help create ideas for alternative strategies or plans for development. In this case the aim is to elaborate a framework for Comacchio s and Cervia s saltpans to uderstand in a better way the potential and the limits to develop and implement a tourism offer in particular in a slow and sustainable way. The following analysis is related to the following issues: Accommodation facilities Promotion Accessibility and mobility Infrastructures Interrelationship with the destination management Interrelationship with the tourism end institutional local system Environmental characteristics
THE TERRITORIAL APPROACH TO SLOW TOURISM The Slowtourism project Italia Slovenia Strategic Project SLOW TOURISM was a project funded in 2010 by the European cross-border Program Italia-Slovenia It was a Program funding 13 projects, for a total amount of 41,176 millions euro, the 55% of them allocated to Italy. The Project, headed by DELTA 2000 obtained ,00 of public resources ( ,00 euro of FESR funds, ,00 euro of national Italian co-financing, ,00 euro of national Slovenian cofinancing and ,00 euro of public obligatory financing by Slovenian partners) involved 27 partners.
LE DIMENSIONI DELLO SLOW TOURISM The slow tourism study shows that a touristic experience can be considered slow if it is characterised by the following six dimensions:
THE SLOW TOURISM S S DIMENSIONS 1.Time: it is the temporal dimension of companies and territorial organization that requires a strategic policy based on a clear medium/long term planning and vision. This means that it is necessary to dedicate some time to the analysis, understanding and planning of qualitative improvements of the activities, services and destinations, both for the clients and employees advantage; 2.Slowness: it refers to the demand and the creation, promotion and supply of slow tourism services and products, through an all-inclusive, deep and involving experience, which allows the visitors to get in touch with the local communities; 3. Contamination: it refers to the relationship between persons, who have different opinions, beliefs, knowledge and cultures, and to the opportunities the system offers to stimulate exchanges between them;
THE SLOW TOURISM S S DIMENSIONS 4. Authenticity: it refers to the ability of offering non-standardized products or services, which allow the visitors to realize that they are in that specific place, not elsewhere. 5. Sustainability: it refers to the impact (or effects) of tourism on the local environment and the need for a sustainable, eco friendly, costeffective, ethically and socially adequate approach towards local communities 6. Emotion: it refers to the ability of creating memorable moments that can stimulate some changes in the visitors approach by making them live absorbing and pleasant experiences.
The saltpans in the territorial slow context 1/2 Time. Planning an offer for delicate and complex areas such as saltpans needs an important input to adapt structural interventions to the environment and to potential visitor targets. It has to do with a project that involves simultaneously, institutions and private operators and addressing them towards forms of collaboration, integrated projects and to an optimization of resources that are absolutely necessary to reach prefixed objectives. Slowness, contamination, authenticity. Every one of these dimensions that I would keep tied together has a strong connection to the reality of the saltpans offer. Starting with a non-massified image that a visit to a saltpan transmits, to the sensation of being transported back to a dimension where time is in harmony with the rythm of nature, with the cycle of the waters, with the seasons and with the nesting of the birds. Furthermore saltpans are a concentration of knowledge, knowhow, and of culture. For Cervia you can even say that it is a saline civilization. It is in this sphere that it is possible to create relations and exchanges that can make a visitor truly feel part of the environment intended as milieu, that they are visiting. The positive exaltation of the aspects connected to the saline culture, can therefore transmit a strong sensation of the authenticity of the locality that one is visiting, of the experience being lived and of the relations that are being formed.
The saltpans in the territorial slow context 2/2 Sustainability. Plays a determinating role in the construction of a touristic offer. The saltpans and their fragile characteristic areas can contribute in a important way to the perception that one has of the territory and of the territory s capacity to develop ecofriendly touristic policies. Emotion. In general saltpans are a unique habitat and the activities that can take place there, therefore are unique and moving.
SALTPANS GUIDELINES From this brief analisys, even realized from a slow tourism point of view would be important to obtain some considerations and guidelines useful to structure a saltpans offer that could be atractiva, coerent and integrated wih the territorial tourism policies.
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES It is useful, in this study, to individuate some strategic objectives that emerge before delineating possible guidelines of intervention Valorize and promote at a national and international level the saltpans, in an integrated way with the Po Delta Park offer Improve the overall offer from a sustainable and ecofriendly point of view Prolongue the touristic season of the saltpans Increase the number of visitors if comparable with saltpans ecosystem Increase the number of visitors that come from the coastline

Linee guida saline 2/2
SUGGESTIONS FOR COMACCHIO - 1/2 Some concrete suggestions emerge from the guidelines. Which can be useful for the development and management of the touristic saltpan offer in Comacchio.
SUGGESTIONS COMACCHIO - 2/2 A new information point near east entrance of the Romea Restore the Torre Rossa The Comacchio saltpan, the sun laboratories Introduction of golf cars Maintain at least a part of salt production for the tourists Developing local merchandising Introduction of touristic salt train or Caudeville Improvement of billboards and street signs
SUGGESTIONS CERVIA 1/2 Some concrete suggestions emerge from the guidelines. Which can be useful for the development and management of the touristic saltpan offer in Cervia.
SUGGESTIONS CERVIA 2/2 The sale dolce of Cervia and the territory Development of web marketing, web promotion, smartphone applications ecc. Introduction of touristic salt train or Caudeville Increase of Improvement of billboards and street signs the equipment necessary for excursions and the reinforcement of promotional activities
FINAL RECCOMANDATION The saltpans of Comacchio and Cervia can be valorized together. Which means developing a strategic development plan. And creating a work pool including the municipalities of Cervia and Comacchio, Società delle Saline, the management of the saltpans, the Po Delta Park as coordinator and the local action group as technical support. A concrete project made up of concrete interventions with the partecipation of public authorities, private operators and with the help of territorial programmes. SALTWORKS
TERRITORIAL COMMUNITARY PROGRAMMING An important opportunity to realize interventions can come from the communitary leader initiative for the Po Delta territory, in the report we have expressed the measures of potential interests SALTWORKS
