1 The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Our hospitals The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital is a 1,000 bed teaching hospital with state-ofthe-art facilities for modern patient care. We work closely with the University of East Anglia's Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences to train health professionals and undertake clinical research. Our recently redeveloped Cromer Hospital on the North Norfolk coast is also a very important facility for us providing high volumes of care to the relatively isolated, predominantly older population of North Norfolk. Our staff of more than 7,000, including those staff employed by our contractors, care for patients who are referred to us by around 100 local GP practices but also from other acute hospitals and from GPs around the country. We are well supported by an active and involved team of over 650 volunteers. We have a range of more specialist services such as cancer care and radiotherapy, orthopaedics, plastic surgery, ophthalmology, rheumatology, children s medicine and surgery, and specialist care for sick and premature babies. We have world class facilities, highly skilled staff and low infection rates. Our patients rate us highly on quality of care and having friendly, approachable staff. We were authorised as a NHS Foundation Trust on May in accordance with the National Health Service Act The NHS Foundation Trust succeeded the NHS Trust formed in Our turnover in 2013/14 was over 470m. Our Vision Our vision is to provide every patient with the care we want for those we love the most. The vision has been, and will continue to be, the highest priority for our staff and is supported by our strategic aims and our quality strategy. Our Strategy Everything that we do will be focused on providing what our patients really need. Our three overarching strategic aims are: To provide first class quality services and excellent patient experience To establish a national reputation for excellent education, teaching and research To enable staff to realise their potential.
2 Strategic aims in more detail: To provide first class quality services and excellent patient experience We will set ourselves stretching targets to improve performance in areas which impact on the patient s experience, including: Rapid access to diagnostics Convenient access to local services Use of technology to facilitate the patient s journey. Our ambition is to be nationally recognised as an exemplar of patient safety. We have developed a major improvement programme (NNIPS) across the organisation. Our key determinants of success will include reductions in: Mortality Healthcare acquired infections Prescribing errors. In addition our ambition to improve patient care will be delivered through: Provision of integrated pathways of care together with local partners in health and social care Repatriation of care for elective patients in order to offer all patients the opportunity to be treated locally at the Trust Continued development of our tertiary services and of joint service pathways, working in collaboration with our neighbouring acute hospitals Further development and promotion of our Cancer Centre status and recognition as a leader in the care of patients with cancer. To establish a national reputation for excellent education, teaching and research. Working collaboratively with the Institutes on the Norwich Research Park our ambition is to achieve international recognition as a centre of excellence for translational and clinical research. We will focus on the specific areas of combined expertise especially diseases of the digestive system, nutrition and healthy ageing. Our achievements will be demonstrated by: Planned increases in clinical academic appointments with associated grant income Improved performance in the 2013 national Research Excellence Framework assessment Achieving full National Institute for Health Research accreditation for the Clinical Research and Trials Unit.
3 To enable all staff to realise their potential It will be essential for us to focus on developing the right skills and skill mix in the workforce. Through being an exemplary employer we will attract, develop and retain a high quality and productive workforce. The measures of success will include improvements in: Sickness absence - reduce to 3.5% All staff who receive a high quality annual appraisal The percentage of staff working in a well structured team environment The percentage of staff who feel there are good opportunities to develop their potential at work The percentage of staff witnessing potentially harmful errors, near misses or incidents The percentage of staff reporting errors, near misses or incidents The percentage of staff agreeing that they understand their role and where it fits in. The strategy is established in a climate of change across the NHS. The Trust will deliver its strategy within the available resources and adapt to the changing needs across the health system. We aim to be a lead player in these changes. University of East Anglia The Trust is a joint venture partner in University of East Anglia s School of Medicine, Health Policy and Practice, including undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. An innovative five-year MB/BS programme began in September 2002 with an intake of over 160 students per year who gain experience in primary and secondary care from the outset of their studies. There are also increasing links with Primary Care with opportunities for research across a wide variety of fields. Norwich Radiology Academy The Trust is home to the Norwich Radiology Academy, run on behalf of the Department of Health and Royal College of Radiologists. The academy, one of only three in the country, is also located on the Norwich Research Park in the Trust s Cotman Centre and provides a ground breaking approach to radiology training in the UK. University of East Anglia School of Nursing and Midwifery The School of Nursing and Midwifery s Edith Cavell building on the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital campus opened in This provides state-of-the-art teaching facilities for a school that has been a leader and major provider in Nursing and Midwifery education in East Anglia for many years.

5 Research and Development We are working in partnership with the University of East Anglia and Norwich Research Park to develop our research capacity and capability to enable continuous improvement in clinical practice. The Institute of Food Research (IFR) and the John Innes Centre are based on the Norwich Research Park with strong links with the Trust in the fields of Nutrition and Health. The Norwich Research Park which is a leading area of research in plant biology, food nutrition and health-related research and one of the largest research parks in Europe. We are just one of 15 NHS Trusts/Foundation Trusts in England to be appointed to run a local branch of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network. The NIHR Clinical Research Network is the clinical research delivery arm of the NHS. It provides funding to hospitals and surgeries to pay for research nurses, scans, x-rays and other costs associated with carrying out clinical research in the NHS. For more information please visit
