How to use A visual guide to Cork Airport This document aims to provide a general outline of travelling through Cork airport with visual supports for children with ASD. Some additional information has been provided for areas where children with ASD may have difficulty, e.g. waiting, going through security, noise levels. Please use this visual guide as a template for planning a trip with your child. You can use the layout as it is or you can simplify the story to suit the needs of your child, for example, and have one or two pictures per page. You can add or delete parts as relevant to you and your family. You can also add information for your child on what to do if it is too loud or if they feel overwhelmed and need a break. It is a good idea to plan in advance for these scenarios to help to minimize any additional stress. The story is written from the child s perspective e.g. using I throughout the story. You can change I to we if you feel this is more appropriate for your child. If your child refers to himself by their own name, replace I with their name. It is recommend to use this visual guide to prepare your child for upcoming holidays a couple of weeks in advance. It is useful to read through it once or twice per week and daily as you get closer to the date for the holiday. This allows your child time to process the information and will also give you a chance to see if you need any additional information. 2 A visual guide to Cork Airport! On day the date of month I am going to place on my holidays. Copy & paste or stick photo of holiday destination here or calendar with dates highlighted. I am going with (fill in names of who else will be travelling with the child) I/We will go to the airport by Photo of car/taxi/bus stop I will leave the house at o clock as I have to be at the airport by o clock.!2

3 When I arrive at the airport, Mum/Dad will park the car/ the taxi will drop us off/ we will get off the bus. OR The airport might be busy because other people will be going on holidays too. This might be a bit loud. I will follow the signs to get to the terminal building. When I arrive at the terminal building I can get a trolley for my luggage.!3

4 I will go into the building through the departures doors. Inside the building there are lots of check-in desks. I will have to check-in for my flight. There will be other people checking in too. I might have to queue up to check in. There may be lots of noise when the airport is busy. If it s too noisy I can.. I (Mum/Dad) will check the departures board to see what desk I need to go to. I will need my flight number.!4

5 When I know what desk number I have to go to, I can join the queue for that gate. I might have to wait for my turn. When it s my turn to check-in, I give the attendant my passport and tickets. I will get a boarding card that will allow me to get on the plane.!5

6 I give my suitcase/bag to the attendant to check-in. I put it on conveyer belt to get weighed. The attendant will put a label on it. The attendant will put my/our bags into the baggage area and they will be put on the plane for me. I will get my back again when I arrive in. Next I go upstairs to the departures gate. I can go on the escalator or take the lift.!6

7 There is a restaurant beside the depaeture gate. I can get something to eat here. First I get my food and drink and pay, then I find a table and sit down. The restaurant might be busy, I might have to wait in a queue to get my food. When I am ready to go to the departure gate. I have to queue up to go through a security check. I will have to wait for my turn in the queue.!7

8 I will give my passport and boarding pass to the security guard. I have to put my bags and all my things through the security scanner. I put all my things into a box to go through the scanner. I might have to take off my shoes, belt, and jewelry and put them through the scanner too. I can t bring (name teddy or blanket or toys your child may like to carry) through the security gate, they have to go through the scanner too. I will put in the box and I can collect them at the other side.!8

9 The security guard will tell me when it s my turn to walk through the security gate. Sometimes an alarm goes off when people walk through. The security guard might ask me to go through again or they might have to search me. This means checking my clothes to make sure I don t have anything that might set off the alarm again. It is important for the security guard to check people as this makes sure the plane is safe for everyone. When I m finished at the security gate I can collect my things from the security scanner.!9

10 I go through the duty free shops to get to the boarding gates. My boarding gate number is on my boarding pass. I can go to my boarding gate, sit down and wait for my flight. When I am waiting I can look out at the planes landing and taking off or I can go to the shop/play with my i Pod/Pad/ DS/book/ Lots of other people will be waiting for the plane too.!10

11 I can go to the play area while I am waiting for the plane. Mum/Dad will tell me when time s up and I will go on the plane. When it s time to board the plane, I will cue up at the desk and wait for my turn. When it s my turn I will give my passport and ticket to the flight attendant at the desk.! 11

12 I will walk down the stairs/lift to board the plane. Sometimes there is an air bridge to the plane.!12

13 Sometimes I will walk outside to get on the plane. When I board the plane, Cabin crew will say Hi to me and all the passengers, they will tell me where to sit. I will put my bag/back pack in the overhead locker. I can take it out again after the plane takes off.!13

14 I will wear my seatbelt when the plane takes off. The cabin crew will let me know when it s safe to take off my seatbelt. I will be on the plane for hours. When I m in the plane I can watch a DVD/ play DS/i Pad/ Pod/games/chat to/have a snack/colour/draw/.etc When the plane lands in airport, I will get off the plane.!14

15 Arriving into Cork Airport When the plane lands, I will get off the plane and walk into the terminal building. I will follow the signs for passport control and baggage reclaim. First, I will go through passport control. I show my passport to the security guard at the desk.!15

16 Then I go and wait for my bags to come at baggage reclaim. I can get a trolley for my bags. Then wait at the conveyor belt for my bags to come out. Lots of other people will be waiting for their bags too. It will be busy in the baggage reclaim area. When I have collected my bag I will walk out through the blue channel.!16

17 Through the glass doors Into the arrivals area of the airport. I will leave the airport and go home by car/bus/taxi/pick up.!17
