M.A. Counseling Practicum COUN 523 M.A. Counseling Internship COUN 593A COUN 594A COUN 595A COUN 593B COUN 594B COUN 595B Certificate of Graduate Studies Internship COUN 593A COUN 594A COUN 595A The purpose of this agreement is to provide a qualified student enrolled in the following programs with appropriate field based clinical experiences in counseling: Master of Arts (M.A.) in Clinical Mental Health Counseling; Marriage, Couple, & Family Counseling; and School Counseling Certificate of Graduate Studies in Clinical Mental Health Counseling; Marriage, Couple, & Family Counseling; Trauma Counseling; and School Counseling PRACTICUM Practicum is often the first counseling experience for students in the masters in counseling programs. As such, students are expected to generally observe and co-facilitate in counseling situations using their basic attending skills and questioning techniques. M.A. practicum takes place in a clinical or K 12 school setting. Students must complete a minimum of 100 clock hours during the course of the Practicum semester. The following describes the Regent University Practicum programs in detail: M.A. CMHC/MCF Practicum (COUN 523) 1. Direct service: a minimum of 40 hours of direct service to clients which may include any combination of face-to-face contact, individual, and group counseling. 2. Indirect service: the remainder of the 100 hours will be indirect hours, which may include hour per week of individual and/or triadic (no more than two students at a time) supervision. 4. Student submission of five audio/video recorded sessions OR two live observation evaluations of direct counseling experiences. Page 1 of 6

2 M.A. Counseling School Practicum (COUN 523) 1. Direct service: a minimum of 40 hours with pre-k through 12 th grade students, including faceto-face individual and group counseling, testing, guidance, consulting, etc. 2. Indirect service: the remainder of the 100 hours will be indirect hours, which may include school meetings, hour per week of individual and/or triadic (no more than two students at a time) supervision. 4. Student submission of five audio/video recorded sessions OR two live observation evaluations INTERNSHIP Counseling internship is a planned, field-based clinical experience following practicum where a student works with clients under supervision in order to further develop or refine their therapeutic skills in realworld settings. The internship includes most of the activities of a regularly employed professional in the setting. Internship is a 600-hour (minimum) multi-semester experience for masters-level students. Certificate of Graduate Studies internships are a 300-hour (minimum) one-semester experience. The following describes the Regent University Internship Programs in detail: M.A. Clinical Mental Health Counseling Internship (COUN 595A/B) Certificate of Graduate Studies in CMHC Internship (COUN 595A) Certificate of Graduate Studies in Trauma Counseling Internship (COUN 595A) 1. Direct service: a minimum of 120 hours of the 300 hours to include face-to-face individual and group counseling, testing, consulting, etc. 2. Indirect service: the remainder of the 300 hours to include report writing, agency meetings, supervisor each semester. M.A. Marriage, Couple, & Family Counseling Internship (COUN 593 A/B) Certificate of Graduate Studies in MCF Counseling Internship (COUN 593A) 1. Direct Service: a minimum of 120 hours of the 300 hours to include face-to-face couples, family, individual, and group counseling, testing, consulting etc. Note: MCF interns are required to have at least HALF of their total hours (i.e. at least 300 of 600 hours over two semesters) and at least HALF of their direct service hours (i.e., at least 120 of 240 hours over two semesters) spent working with couples and families. This means that a CGS in MCF intern must spend ALL 300 total and 120 direct service hours in one semester working with couples and families. 2. Indirect Service: the remainder of the 300 hours to include report writing, agency meetings, Page 2 of 6

3 supervisor each semester. M.A. Counseling K 12 School Internship (COUN 594 A/B) 1. Direct service: a minimum of 120 hours of the 300 hours with grades Pre-K 6 or grades 7 12 including face-to-face individual and group counseling, testing, guidance, consulting, etc. 2. Indirect service: the remainder of the 300 hours to include school meetings, supervision, professional development, staff meetings, in-services, etc. supervisor each semester. 5. Student submission of midterm and final evaluations and appropriate log sheets. Certificate of Graduate Studies in School Counseling Internship (COUN 594A) The student should be aware that the requirements for a one-semester CGS in School Counseling internship are more stringent than those of a regular internship due to the high number of direct hours with children that are required (i.e., 200 hours in the CGS internship vs. 120 hours in Internship A or B). The student must complete a minimum of 300 clock hours in a middle school setting, which is defined as a school that houses students in 6 th 8 th grades, during one semester. 1. Direct service: a minimum of 100 hours with 6 th graders AND a minimum of 100 hours with 7 th and 8 th graders, including face-to-face individual and group counseling, testing, guidance, consulting, etc. 2. Indirect service: the remainder of the 300 hours to include report writing, school meetings, supervisor during the semester. Page 3 of 6

4 The University Program Agrees: 1. To assign a University Faculty Practicum/Internship Supervisor to facilitate communication between the University (School of Psychology and Counseling) and the student s local supervisor; 2. To provide assistance and consultation to the local supervisor; 3. The Faculty Practicum/Internship Supervisor should be immediately contacted should any problem or change in relation to the student, local supervisor, or University occur; and 4. To ensure that the Faculty Practicum/Internship Supervisor is responsible for assigning a grade upon the student s completion of the practicum/internship. 5. The Faculty Practicum/Internship Supervisor will provide small group supervision: o Practicum: three hours per week for no more than 12 students o Internship: three hours every other week for no more than 12 students The Local Supervisor Agrees: 1. To assign a supervisor with a minimum of a Master s degree in counseling or a related profession with equivalent qualifications, including appropriate professional license(s) (i.e., LPC/LMHC, LMFT, LCSW, LCP, etc.); and a minimum of two (2) years of post-licensure clinical experience in the program area in with the student is completing clinical instruction and successful completion of graduate level coursework in counselor (or related) supervision. School counseling supervisors must be licensed school counselors with a minimum of two (2) years of experience in that field. 2. To assign a supervisor who is employed or contracted with the site in question and who has the time and interest in supervising the counseling student; 3. To provide opportunities for the student to engage in the activities that meet the objectives in the designated practicum/internship sections above; 4. To provide settings for the student to conduct individual and group counseling sessions with assured privacy and sufficient space for appropriate equipment; 5. To provide necessary and appropriate technology that assists with learning; 6. To provide one-to-one and/or triadic supervision, which involves some examination of student work using audio/video recordings, observation, and/or live supervision (Note: Supervision should include weekly interaction with an average of one hour per week.); and 7. To complete the Regent University School of Psychology and Counseling s evaluation forms. The Practicum/Internship Student Agrees: 1. To submit a resume and any necessary documentation to the site supervisor; 2. To adhere to the administrative policies, rules, standards, schedules, and practices of the site; 3. To be punctual and present at the scheduled times of the student s practicum/internship; and 4. To complete the necessary evaluations, including a midterm and final site evaluation for each semester of practicum/internship to be discussed with the site supervisor, midterm and final self-evaluations, and a midterm and final evaluation of the site supervisor for each semester of practicum/internship. The student will participate in the practicum/internship activities (checked above) in sufficient amounts as to allow an adequate evaluation of the student s level of competence in each activity. Karen Mercer will be the temporary faculty liaison until the counseling student is (Field Placement Liaison) assigned a faculty supervisor for the semester. The faculty supervisor will facilitate communication between the practicum/intern student, the practicum/internship site supervisor, and the school regarding the student progress, any problems, and performance evaluations.
