1 Michelle Smith 1 Thematic Unit: Animals Lesson Topic: Habitats Content Areas: Science, Math, Language Arts, Reading Grade Level/s: 2nd Grade (20 students) Language Proficiency Level/s: LEP Some Beginners, most Intermediate, and a few Advanced Overall Goal/s of Unit: In this thematic unit students will be developing background knowledge about animals and their habitats. By doing this they will use grade level content vocabulary within the regular classroom setting. Students will be practicing and improving their language skills in the areas of: a) comprehension, b) academic language, c) oral language, and d) written language. TESOL and Tennessee Standards for ESL: TESOL National Standards Goal 1, Standard 1 - To use English to communicate in social settings: Students will use English to participate in social interactions Goal 2, Standard 1 - To use English to achieve academically in all content areas: Students will use English to interact in the classroom Goal 2, Standard 2 - To use English to achieve academically in all content areas: Students will use English to obtain, process, construct, and provide subject matter information in spoken and written form 1. retelling information 2. responding to the work of peers and others 3. representing information visually and interpreting information presented visually Goal 2, Standard 3 - To use English to achieve academically in all content areas: Students will use appropriate leaning strategies to construct and apply academic knowledge. Tennessee ESL Standards S Describe familiar settings and events. S Ask pertinent questions; respond to questions with basic facts. L Understand content specific vocabulary and discourse features of the content area. W Write a variety of text types (e.g. narrative, descriptive, persuasive, expository, procedural). W Write to convey ideas or stories using pictures, marks, letters, words and simple sentences. R Use pre-reading and reading strategies such as accessing prior knowledge, predicting, previewing, using graphic organizers and setting a purpose. Lesson Objectives: TLW participate in a mini-lesson and small group work and be able to: 1. Recall animal groups and their characteristics. 2. Discuss what animals need and how they meet their needs. 3. Choose an animal group and discuss what type of habitat they would need to live in, based on their characteristics. 4. Match animal pictures to habitats and descriptions. 5. Classify statements true or false. 6. Compare two habitats using graphic organizer. 7. Based on choice and proficiency level, select a group task to complete Group Tasks: a. Write an illustrated short story from an animals view telling about their home and things they need, using vocabulary words. b. Research habitats using books and computer to complete Habitat Facts.

Instructional Procedures: Set Short review of animal vocabulary words and animal groups. TT and TSW create a list of things they need and discuss how and where they get them. Mini-Lesson Read, Places to Live. Engage students in content related discussion. Discussing each habitat, the animals that live there and how their needs are met. TTW introduce vocabulary words (vocabulary cards) Teacher will use the ELMO to create a Tree Map to identify characteristics of each habitat. (Example: wet, dry, hot, cold, warm, green, brown, etc) Group Task #1 Match animal to habitat and description and record using Match Sheet. Shared Books Read aloud, Animal Habitats!. Engage students in a discussion of true and false. Pass out the fact cards and have students in pairs decide if their fact is true or false and place in the correct category on the pocket chart. Group Task #2 Student Choice: a.) write an illustrated short story from an animals view telling about their home and things they need, using vocabulary words. b.) Research habitats using books and computer to complete Habitat Facts.

Guided Reading TTW use leveled books from Treasure Chest (ELL Program Reading Series) to discuss each habitat. TTW use a double bubble map to compare and contrast two habitats. TSW use a double bubble map to compare another set of habitats as a group. Closure Review and play Habitat Hustle. TSW write in their daily journal to tell what they learned.
