2 First Thoughts. How do I use interactive notebooks to engage learning in my classroom? How can interactive notebooks be used to integrate across the curriculum?
3 What is a Science Interactive Notebook? A science notebook is a place where language, data, and experience work together to form meaning for the student. contains the student s investigations, vocabulary (in context), student drawings, data tables and charts, reflections, etc. structured so that the student may find the information. A Table of Contents helps the student organize his/her work.
4 What are Interactive Notebooks? A note taking process that allows students to record information in a personal and meaningful way. A way for students use teacher supplied notes to draw whatever illustration makes sense to them. A way for students to personalize their work.
5 How is this process? Can be challenging Takes a bit of patience Requires modeling, modeling, modeling Must consistently be reinforced Learning curve for both the teacher and the students
6 The Outcome Students are learning one way to organize their work Uses reading strategies within a content area, such as science, social studies or math Helps parents to understand some of what is going on in the classroom by seeing the examples in the Interactive Notebook Helps students to understand what they know and what they need to focus on
7 The Most Important Students make their own meaningful connections It encourages pride in student work It encourages cooperative learning It appeals to multiple intelligences The kids love it and learn so much!
8 Why Students Should Use Interactive Notebooks? Students use both their visual and linguistic intelligences. Interactive Notebooks allow visual learners to use their best medium to explore and share ideas Both types of learners will utilize their writing skills
9 Interactive Notebooks Allow Students to Record information in an engaging way Rehearse and retell information Discuss and accept other s ideas Identify main ideas Paraphrase Transform written concepts into visuals Become more independent thinkers
10 Notebooks Help Students to Organize as They Learn Students record ideas about activities they engage in during a unit A variety of organization techniques will be used Assignments will be kept together in a regular place and in logical order
11 How Do I Get Started? The notebook-loose leaf paper in a three pronged folder, spiral notebook, or composition book Pencils, regular and colored Glue stick Scissors Ruler Teacher supplied notes/worksheets Grading expectations
12 Getting started Step 1: On the cover, write your name, your teacher s name and grade
13 Step 2: Use the first page as the cover page. Then, starting on the next page, number the first 50 pages. 1 Science Notebook

15 6 Table of Contents Lab Safety 7 Begin your first notebook entry on page 7 Title each entry in your notebook and then record the title and page number in your table of contents.
16 Klentschy & Molina-de La Torre s Seven Components Question, Problem, and Purpose: Scientists begin an investigation with a question or a problem to solve. Therefore, effective questioning should be encouraged throughout student investigations in order to provide a strong cognitive connection. Prediction: In classroom practice, a prediction is actually a conditional statement that will help students to focus on what they think will happen as a result of conducting their investigation. Developing a Plan: This establishes the steps students will follow to seek an answer to their focus question or resolve their problem through testing their prediction. Observations, Data, Charts, Drawings, and Illustrations: From observations, students collect data, make drawings and illustrations, make charts and graphs from their data, and comment on what they have observed. Claims and Evidence: Teachers need to create classroom environments that support evidencebased scientific practices. Drawing Conclusions: This component is the justification that links the claim and evidence together. Students use existing ideas to attempt to make sense of an investigation, and their ideas change as a consequence of the evidence. Reflection - Next Steps and New Question: The outcome of the science investigation may stimulate students to think of new questions that they would like to investigate regarding the topic being studied.
17 Lener s guidelines for setting up a notebook 1. Encourage students to decorate the cover to make it their own. 2. Mark the top of the first six pages (front and back) of the notebook with the title, Table of Contents. 3. Number every page (front and back) in the notebook. 4. Mark the date of every entry and add the title of the entry to the table of contents page. 5. Write neatly and include details, drawings, and measurements in entries. Campbell and Fulton s four organizational strategies 1. Technical drawings and diagrams with labels: Students will observe the structure of objects and illustrate with a detailed drawing of the observed object. 2. Notes and lists: Students will use this strategy to record data while observing something that is constantly changing. 3. Charts, tables, and graphs: Students will include several graphs to illustrate their data. 4. Written Observations: Students will write information that cannot be represented with the first three strategies in complete sentences. 6. Never use markers except to decorate the cover!
18 This is what the table of contents looks like as it is filled in. The numbers refer to the page numbers where each investigation is located.

20 How is the Notebook graded? Explain rubric to students Conferencing-teacher and peer Notebooks may be collected with or without notice,. students MUST have their notebook everyday.
