2 We have arrived! It was one of the best days in my career as an educator when I welcomed our students to their new building at 101 Ridgecrest Ave. After all the meetings and discussions to bring our dreams to reality it was almost a surreal experience. In one week the school was closed, moved, and reopened in this wonderful new facility. As I welcomed our grade nine and ten students on Tuesday morning I felt as though we had finally reached our goal of opening a new building. A school is only really a school when the students and teachers are together doing their work. I want to thank all of our parents and students for the support we have received over the past few months. Many of our students were directly involved with packing and unpacking. Our staff has been incredible throughout our change of location. The boxes have been packed and unpacked and throughout Insert the process message teaching here and learning has continued. Parent Advisory Council News Excitement continues to grow as the move to the new school becomes a reality. The new state of the art school, equipped with the latest technology and learning amenities is a welcomed sight we have long awaited. As the administration plans the transition to the new location we have been kept informed on the progress and challenges of the move. This has permitted us to participate by offering input, voicing concerns and suggestions to cooperatively embrace this exciting change. Our regular meetings have featured guest speakers on Student Scholarships, The Safe Youth Project and Parenting the Net Generation, as resource information for parents. Meetings are intended to keep parents informed, allow opportunity to ask questions or voice concerns, focusing on enhancing the school environment and offering parental supports in a friendly casual setting. By Detlef Hindemith, PAC Chair wstkpac@yahoo.ca NOTICE Traffic Signal Light on Ridgecrest Great news, the Public Works Department recently informed us traffic lights are to be installed at the intersection of Main Street and Ridgecrest Avenue during the 2008 construction year. As parents working together with the school and community, we can make a difference. Thank you to all who voiced their concerns and collaborated in making this intersection safer. Detlef Hindemith PAC Chair This morning I stood in the Randy Bachman Commons taking in the sites and sounds of our students as they gathered for the start of morning classes. The signal for the start of class sounded and our students rose and headed in all four directions to their classes. Throughout the day I visited with groups of students who were working on homework, reading, talking, and generally enjoying their fantastic new commons. Some students still can t believe that this is actually their school. One student told me he felt as though he was on a field trip and someone would be telling him it was time to go back to his own school. Teachers are enjoying their spaces and working through the details of adjusting to new routines. S.W.A.T. Team at National Anti-Tobacco Forum The MMA and members of the Students Working against Tobacco team were represented at the 5th National Conference on Tobacco or Health in Edmonton in October. For the past several years, PHIC has mentored the SWAT team and supported its research on smoking in the movies. Through peer-orientated special events, the group of teen activists at West Kildonan Collegiate draws media attention to the dangers of tobacco use and film industry tactics targeting young audiences. This goal is to spread the word that youth will not tolerate tobacco industry deception. Arts Junktion, MB Daffodil Days Daffodil Days gives hope in the fight against cancer to support cancer research, information services, peer support to cancer patients and their families. Eight West Kildonan students served on Sunday, February 21st at the Manitoba Lung Fundraiser, unpacking and organizing the tulips for the event. Page 7

It was named after Edmund Partridge who served for 40 years as Councilor and Reeve for the West Kildonan community.
