1 The ear is a very delicate part of the body and some of the damage that noise can cause is often nonrecoverable. Hearing loss is cumulative over a period of years, many individuals will not realise that their hearing is being affected. Parker Merchanting supply a full range of hearing protection to meet the need of industry. To the requirements of EN5-1, EN5 -, or EN5 -.; 00 as appropriate. Noise Regulations Under the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 005 a new Limit value of 87dB(A) at the ear (under hearing protective equipment) must not be exceeded, and the Upper Action Level becomes 85dB(A) and the Lower Action Level becomes 80dB(A). Whilst a reduction of 5dB(A) may not, at first glance, appear significant, it is worth noting that a reduction of just db(a) is roughly equated to halving the sound level. Ear Muffs EN 5-1 Ear muffs consist of two ear cups that are filled with sound absorbing foam. Each cup has a soft pad that is either foam or foam and liquid filled. The ear cups are held in place by means of a tension head band. Ear Plugs EN5 - Ear plugs are inserted into the ear canal to seal the entrance. Helmet Mounted Ear Defenders EN5 - These ear defenders are specifically designed to be mounted on industrial safety helmet. They are adjustable, so they can be positioned over the ear when required, or parked away from the ear at other times. Choosing the right level of hearing protection Each item of hearing protection within this catalogue states and SNR rating. The SNR (single number rating) indicates the general level of noise reduction in decibels that the wearer is likely to experience. For example, if an earplug states an SNR of 0, then when the workplace noise level is 105 decibels the wearer will be exposed to 75 decibels. The SNR rating is a generalisation of the overall protection for the purposes of comparison. The actual level of protection offered will vary according to the frequency of the noise. A full table of noise reduction (attenuation) data for different frequencies is stated against each product. When selecting hearing protection, the wearer should be aware that, unlike in many forms of PPE, it is possible to have too much protection. The wearer still needs to be able to hear warning sirens and approaching vehicles for instance. Legislation Under EU noise legislation introduced in the UK in April 06 employers must provide suitable hearing protection where noise exceeds 80dB(A) and if noise levels are 85dB(A) or over must be supplied and worn.
