The hands should move from 'hip to lip' - from the hip up to lip height and back Fast Arms - the arms should be pumped forwards and backwards as fast as possible Leg Action - the knees should be driven up to allow a good stride forward Balls of the Feet - the children should run on the balls of the feet - this is the part of the foot that should make contact with the ground During the lesson the children should: Focus on maintaining a good running technique to develop their speed Know and be able to explain the difference between running slow and running fast (sprinting) Be running with increased control and consistency Page 1 of 6
2 Warm Up Rock, Paper, Scissors Getaway Game Strand : KUFH Duration : 2-5 Teaching Points The children work in pairs and stand in the middle of the area as shown in the diagram. Make sure there is a safe distance between each of the pairs Give all the children a bib to tuck into the back of their trousers so it sticks out like a tail The children play a game of 'Rock, Paper, Scissors' in the middle of the area The loser of the game must turn and pass their safe line before the winner catches their tail The game is played as follows: The children count to 3 and then show their hand as 'Rock' (a clenched fist), 'Paper' (a flat hand) or 'Scissors' (a scissor shape with the first two fingers) The following rules apply: Paper beats Rock by wrapping round it Rock beats Scissors by blunting them Scissors beats Paper by cutting it Once the children have played the game, the loser tries to reach their safe line before their tail is caught by their opponent. The children repeat the game, returning to the middle each time to start React quickly depending on the result of the game Turn quickly Keep your head up to see where to go Only grab your opponent's tail (bib) Play sets of 5 then change partners To make activity harder Increase the distance to the safe line To make activity easier Decrease the distance to the safe line Analysis Explain how warming up can effect your own performance - KUFH Level 4 Discuss with the children how warming up correctly contributes to a good performance during the activity: What does a good warm up help to achieve? Prepare the body for exercise Focus on parts/areas of the body that are going to be used within the upcoming activity Gradually increase in intensity of exercise that Gradually increase Heart and breathing rate Prepare the mind for exercise Page 2 of 6
3 Skill Development Sprinting - Developing Speed Strand : AD Duration : 3-5 Teaching Points The children work in pairs - each pair requires 3 marker cones and 1 stop watch Partners take it in turns to run or time with the stop watch The timer calls out 'Go' and the first runner begins running from the start cone. After 5 seconds the timer shouts 'stop' The runner stops immediately and places a marker cone to record the distance they ran The children then swap roles and repeat the exercise The children continue to take turns to sprint and time whilst aiming to beat the previous distance they ran Remind the children of the key techniques that make a good sprinting action: Keep the head straight and still. While running you should keep your head facing forward Arm action - L shape arms. Arms should move forward and back past the side of the body. The hands should move from 'hip to lip' (from hip height up to lip height and back) Fast Arms - the arms should be pumped forward and backwards as fast as possible Leg Action - the knees should be brought up high to allow long strides in a forward direction Balls of the Feet - the children should run on the balls of their feet. The balls of the feet should be the point of contact with the ground As well as timing the timer watches their partner and gives them feedback on their sprinting technique - what they are doing well and what can they do better so they can run faster? Encourage the children to use the correct technique when running at speed Highlight the use of good technique Highlight techniques the children could improve in order to help them run faster To make activity harder Increase the time the children run over To make activity easier Focus on developing a good technique rather than speed Page 3 of 6
4 Skill Development Time Bomb Strand : AD Duration : Teaching Points The children work in groups of 3. Each group requires 6 beanbags, 1 stop watch and 1 marker cone Set up the activity as shown in the diagram One child begins as timer. The other two begin as runners Starting at the marker cone the runners, with 1 beanbag each, run as fast as they can in 5 seconds Once the 5 seconds have gone the timer calls 'Stop' The runners drop their beanbags as soon as they hear the 'Stop' signal The runners then return to the marker, get a second beanbag and repeat the activity. This time, the timer gives the runners 10 seconds to run as far as they can The activity is repeated one final time for 30 seconds The children then swap roles and repeat the activity. Each time they have a turn at running they attempt to increase the distance they manage to run Encourage the children to use the correct technique for running at speed keep your head up to look where you are going Arm action - L shape arms. The hands should move from 'hip to lip' - from hip height up to lip height and back Fast Arms - the arms should be pumped forward and backwards as fast as possible Leg Action - the knees should be brought high to allow long strides forward Balls of the Feet - the children should run on the balls of their feet. The balls of the feet should be the point of contact with the ground The beanbag must be dropped immediately on the "Stop" signal To make activity harder Increase the amount of time the children are given to run for To make activity easier Reduce the amount of time the children are given to run for Page 4 of 6
5 Game Sprint Race - Personal Best Strand : SA Duration : Teaching Points Split the children into groups of 6. Each group requires an area to work in as shown in the diagram 4 children in each group race against other. 1 child takes the role of 'Official' and 1 child takes the role of 'Timer' The 4 runners line up on the start line. The official and Timer stand by the finish line The Official starts the race by shouting 'Go'. The 4 children sprint to the finish line On the signal the Timer also starts the stop watch. As the runners get near the finish line the Timer calls out as each second passes on the watch so the children can hear their time as they cross the finish line The children continue racing each other. Change the Official and Timer at the beginning of each new race Encourage the children to use the correct Sprinting technique Encourage the children to run as fast as they can whilst maintaining good technique Ask the Timer to call out each second on the clock loudly and clearly so each child who is racing can hear their time as they pass the finish line Encourage the children to experiment with different ways of using their body to increase the speed they run at Encourage children to work well together within their groups. Be kind to each other and take it in turns to be the Official Progression The children continue to race each other as described above but they are awarded points depending on their finishing position in each race The Official awards points as follows - 1st place = 4 points, 2nd = 3 points, 3rd = 2 points, 4th = 1 point The children have 2 races against the children in their group. They then add up the points they have earned after the two races The children then swap groups and race other children in the class After each race they should keep adding up their points The children keep moving round racing different children and keeping their score Teaching Points Remember how many points you have scored Encourage the children to use the correct Sprinting technique Encourage and highlight the importance of using good Sprinting technique Page 5 of 6
6 Warm Down Static Stretching - Pupil Led Strand : KUFH Duration : 2-5 Teaching Points Ask the children to stand in a semi-circle around the teacher Ask the children to come to the front and show a stretch to the class Start at the top of the body and work down the body stretching the major body parts Hold the stretch for seconds Do not bounce Hold the stretch Which muscles can you feel stretching? Plenary What techniques enable us to run fast? Teaching Points Keep your head still so that you can see where you are running Arm Action - L shape arms (bend the elbows at 90 degrees). Move them alternatively, forwards and backwards past the side of the body Leg Action - move the legs as fast as you can Leg Action - the knees should drive upwards to allow long strides forwards Run on the balls of the feet. This is the part of the foot that should make contact with the ground to enable us to take the next step as fast as possible Plenary In which sports do we need to run fast? Teaching Points Football, basketball, short running race (sprint race), rugby, cricket, rounders are all examples where the ability to run fast will help you play the game and improve your performance Evaluation How did the children get on with the activities today? - Most were successful and displayed a good understanding when questioned Move on to the next theme in the unit - Most struggled and were not successful at the activities Recover this theme next week, perhaps with the focus at a lower level Page 6 of 6
