2 Exchange studies in Public Health Sciences Full programme information Public health scientists work with the prevention of disease and the promotion of health and quality of life. The study programme prepares students for many different professions in the healthcare sector, as well as development cooperation work, research, teaching and public administration. Master s Programme in Global Health (60 Higher Education Credits, 1 year) The Global Master's Programme in Global Health will give you a future dedicated to addressing the world's health challenges and focuses on how relevant research can contribute evidence to assist in meeting these challenges. The ideal student - a passionate one Students may come from a variety of backgrounds but must have one thing in common - a drive and passion for the subject area and the intention to work towards considerably reducing the global burden of diseases, injuries and ill-health. What happens during the programme? Global health combines expertise and knowledge from disciplines such as public health, biomedicine, epidemiology, demography, health economics, political science, environmental sciences, sociology and anthropology. The subject area provides a new platform for research, education and information about health challenges facing the world's population, in particular in countries burdened by poverty-stricken populations. The programme focuses on how relevant research can contribute evidence to assist in meeting these challenges. Global health is a particularly strong field of research at Karolinska Institutet, and during the programme you will early on be meeting and working with research groups face to face. You will acquire knowledge in research methodology, which is a good preparation for the final course research project as well as possible post graduate studies and publications. Career prospects after graduation The Master's Programme in Global Health will not only open doors on the global market but also give you skills that are desirable on local levels. You can expect a career in the public and private sectors as well as non-governmental organisations and academia. 1

3 Master s Programme in Public Health Sciences (120 Higher Education Credits, 2 years) One programme - different tracks The Master's Programme in Public Health Sciences offers a range of options and provides a global perspective on public health issues as well as the opportunity to get in-depth knowledge in a number of areas by choosing a track within the programme as well as elective courses and independent projects. The first year of the education is focused on advancing your knowledge in public health issues, scientific methodology and research preparation led by renowned researchers and professors within the field of public health and medicine. Please note that tracks may vary from year to year. The following tracks are offered in 2013/2014: Public Health Epidemiology The Epidemiology track suits students with a great interest in using quantitative methods to improve human health. The highly accessible Swedish health registers provide valuable data for students and researchers in the health epidemiology field and the use of these is integrated in the coursework. Key features of the Epidemiology track include the focus on disease prevention and nonclinical populations. You will during your study time learn to apply sociodemographic, behavioural and risk factors as well as scientific principles to enable disease prevention and evaluation. The focus on prevention and evaluation is particularly strong in the track compared to other equivalent programmes in the world today. You will acquire analytic tools suitable for a global context. The track provides an opportunity to develop theoretical and practical skills for analysing health and health care issues on an organisational and policy level. The objectives of this track is to give you a solid base for a career in the healthcare and pharmaceutical fields, enhance your existing set of health economics, management and policy skills, and gain theoretical and conceptual understanding of the function of the health sector. The acquired tools will enable you to successfully work within one of the fastest growing fields in the world. 2

4 Career opportunities after graduation You might soon be a health economist, manager or researcher. Upon graduation, you can expect both a local and a global career either within research or the public sector, or at agencies responsible for environmental and health protection. Options in English and curricula 2013/2014 The Master s Programmes in Global Health and Public Health Sciences offer options in English as presented below. All courses are subject to change and it is recommended that you always consult our website ki.se/exchangestudies for updated information. Courses and research-oriented projects All courses are full-time courses and require at least 40 hours of work per week. A student can only attend one course at a time. One study week is equivalent to 1.5 ECTS credits. The performance will be graded in accordance with the ECTS grading scale and on the basis of the student s fulfilment of the learning outcomes stated in the course syllabus. Specific requirements may apply. General requirements have to be met in order to apply for the courses: A good command of English (equal to a TOEFL score of 550) At least 120 ECTS credits (2 years) of studies in the field of Public Health Additional general requirements for the courses on Master level may apply. Courses offered on Master level in Public Health Sciences The Master s Programmes in Global Health and Public Health Sciences at Karolinska Institutet consist of five areas of specialization whereas the courses on three of them are open for exchange students during the academic year 2013/2014. Prerequisites for exchange students attending Master courses in Public Health are at least 120 ECTS credits (2 years) of studies in the field of Public Health.
